The Mexicans attacked and the war was on.

Spanish Coins on American Notes
    A WWW Numismatic Exhibit
About this page If George Washington did throw a silver dollar across the Potomac, it surely was a Spanish dollar. The Spanish dollar, perhaps better known as the eight reales or piece of eight, circulated widely in the United States long before there were US dollars. It was the model for the US dollar. Spanish coins served as legal tender in the United States, and were only demonetized in 1857. Vignettes of coins of the Spanish American colonies, and less commonly those of homeland Spain, were used on many US obsolete notes . As such they may have served as indications of value to a public justifiably reluctant to accept paper money. Spanish coins were familiar to United States residents, and they were esteemed widely for uniform and high quality and stable value. Spanish coin vignettes were used on our colonial currency as well as obsolete notes. This exhibit examines a selection of post-colonial US obsolete notes that have depictions of Spanish coins. An Introduction to the Frick Art Reference Library Welcome to the home page of the Frick Art Reference Library. This Library is one of the world's great repositories for the documentation and visual study of Western Art and serves as the research arm of The Frick Collection. The Library was founded in 1920 by Helen Clay Frick as a memorial to her father, Henry Clay Frick, to further her father's stated goals for The Frick Collection : “to encourage and develop the study of the fine arts, and to advance the general knowledge of kindred subjects.” Its mission has always been to gather photographs of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and illuminated manuscripts executed between the fourth and the mid-twentieth century by European and American artists; to collate with each photograph facts relating to the object’s history and present location; and to create a comprehensive research library for the study of Western art. Today the Library’s holdings of books, periodicals, auction sale catalogs, special collections and archives complement the photoarchive to comprise one of the world’s most valued art research centers and the most comprehensive resource on the history of collecting and patronage.
For more than seventy-five years, the Library has been committed to the highest standards in text and image collections development and public service to benefit the research of all members of the art community, including those who study art in its broader historical and cultural context. The historic and tranquil setting of the Library, adjacent to the Collection, welcomes all adults with a serious interest in art.

Welcome to the fascinating hobby of breeding and Racing Pigeons! Homing (racing) Pigeons are used for racing, similar to horse racing. Pigeon fanciers come from all walks of life. Rich, poor, minorities, young and old. It is a wonderful hobby, and financially available to people on all levels. The hobby is primarily male, but also have women fliers. Young boys seem attracted to pigeons naturally, the way young girls seem to gravitate towards horses. Many older pigeon people started when they were young children in a time when it seemed every neighborhood had a pigeon loft. Racing Pigeons are a very hardy species, easily housed and require no complex feeds compared to some exotic bird species. They adapt well to most any climate or geographic location. Racing Pigeons have a strong homing instinct and can be released to fly around their loft, as well be trained to return to their loft from up to 600 miles or more.

LEANDRO L. FULLON (1873-1904)
Commanding General for the Visayas
Philippine revolutionary army (Katipunan)

On September 6, 1898, Gen. Leandro Fullon embarked on the gunboat Don Francisco at Cavite
to command Filipino revolutionary forces in the island of Panay. Together with Gen. Ananias Diocno and Gen. Martin Delgado, he led Filipino troops against Spanish forces under Gen. Diego de los Rios. Later, they fought against American troops commanded by Gen. Marcus P. Miller and Gen. Robert P. Hughes. Throughout the conflict, Fullon urged military leaders in the island to remain united and the troops to adhere to the highest standards of discipline, integrity and patriotism. He sought to resolve conflicts between the civilian government and the military leadership in Panay while battling corruption and abuses of power in both sectors. He was appointed provincial governor in 1901 and he supervised the census for the Visayas in 1903. Born in Hamtik, Antique on March 13 1873, he died on October 16, 1904.
