http://www.uga.edu/~iaas/History.html
African Americans have played a vital role in the history and culture of their country since its founding. An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history.
Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery.
Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

Black History Month
Email this page to a friend with a personal message In 1915, historian Carter G. Woodson proposed a "Negro History Week" to honor the history and contributions of African-Americans. Nine years later, his dream became reality. Woodson chose the second week of February to pay tribute to the birthdays of two Americans that dramatically affected the lives of Blacks: Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14). The week-long observance officially became Black History Month in 1976.

The History of African-Americans in White by Ann Waterman PART 1 - INTRODUCTION Nursing has a long and well chronicled history but that history is sadly lacking in information about the early African-American nurses. As a nursing educator I chose to do this project to enlighten myself and others regarding the history of African-American nurses to better understand their educational struggles and their achievements in the nursing profession. I thought my own historical knowledge about nursing history in general was adequate. But as I reviewed in my mind the historically famous nurses that were taught about in my nursing programs and that I have since read about in nursing journals I find they have been all Caucasian with the exception of the first black American nurse that graduated from a school of nursing in 1879. Many of the early books I researched, those written between 1943 and 1967, contained one or more paragraphs to at most two pages about the early history of African-American nurses. Even the book entitled The Historical Development of Nursing- Emphasizing the Cultural Background of the Race and the Influence of Philosophy and Religion on the Healing Arts by Sister Charles Marie Frank, written in 1952, contained only one and one-half pages of text and two pictures related to African-American nurses and their history. Unfortunately the rich history of African-American nurses was not recorded in any of the history books that were published in these early years. I was able to find two wonderful books written by African-American nurses that chronicled the rich, full history of African-American nurses. I have contacted many African-American nurses in Columbus and these two books were suggested to me by several nurses and by the recruiter and director of minority students for Mount Carmel College of Nursing, Kathy Epsy.

page summary
A century of debate between proponents of traditional and progressive teaching approaches may have missed the point. The important meanings we want students to learn should drive the methods we use to teach them. Teaching should focus on meaningful understandings of the kind that expand students' knowledge of the world they inhabit, not on facts that have little relevance beyond their own limited context. Effective teachers seek a harmonious balance between teaching approaches; they use what works. Meaning should be embedded in the body of knowledge taught to students. Teaching activities are the strategies that implement the body of knowledge: they are the tools that construct meaning. It shall be the continuing mission of this web site to ask teachers what meaningful understandings students should have, and what activities are most effective in conveying them. 2003 Michael G. Maxwell

Using Museums to Teach about Japan
Willamarie Moore

October 2002 Whether or not your school is located near a museum that offers school programs, kits, or special events specific to Japan, your students can benefit from museum resources. Museums of all kinds offer a variety of educational services, and today taking advantage of museum resources is easier than ever. This digest introduces teachers to the value of museum learning, reviews different museum resources available to enhance teaching about Japan at the K-12 level, and suggests several Web resources to supplement classroom instruction.
The Value of Museum Learning Museum education is primarily concerned with meaningful interaction with objects, activities, and knowledgeable people. There is nothing like seeing an original work of art with your own eyes, touching an artifact with your own hands, or engaging in activities with people of another culture to bring meaning to an otherwise dry set of facts. Museums offer unique learning opportunities through sensory exploration; discussion and analysis; remembering, comparing, synthesizing; multi-contextualizing; and making cross-curricular connections. The Japanese House at TCM teaches students about daily life in Japan by immersing them completely in an authentic environment. For example, students remove their shoes before entering, walk and sit on
