American History
Reflections of a 20th century man
contributed by Lu Hickey and written by John William Fulks Dedicated to our children's children I was born John William Fulks in Marceline, Missouri on November 6, 1920, the same day Warren G. Harding was elected president of the USA during the final days of Woodrow Wilson's administration. It was just 2 years after the end of World War I, the "war to end all wars" and only 8 years since the Titanic sank off the Newfoundland coast on April 15, 1912. It would be just 21 years, almost exactly to the day, until Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the "date that will live in infamy". What a lucky little kid I was, to be born at such an auspicious moment in the history of the world. My dad was Jasper Clarence Fulks and my mom was Teresa Julia Walsh. They both came from central Missouri: Dad from a little town called California and Mom from a nearby farm. Her parents met during the ocean passage from Ireland during the "potato famine" and were married later in the USA. There were 13 kids. Mom was the 12th. Her sister, Kate was the 13th. My Aunt Nona was the 11th. I can't remember them all except for Garrett, Joe, Helen, Nellie, etc. Dad's parents were merchants, as was he also (more on this later). His mother was Sally Ann Sappington from a long line of Virginia Sappingtons who can trace their family back to, at least, Christopher Gist, a colonial officer who, in a familiar painting, is depicted in the boat with George Washington as they crossed the Delaware River to Trenton New Jersey on December 26, 1776. Dad's father was William J. Fulks, a general store merchant in California, Missouri and, himself the son of old Monitau County, Missouri Judge William Fulks, a stern-looking old patriarch of the 18th century.

American Music in the 20th Century by Kyle Gann Now available in stores! Schirmer Books (1997), $39.95 American Music in the 20th Century is the first history of modern American music to extensively discuss the last quarter of the century. It is also the first to treat the indigenous American composition tradition as central, and to push European trends and traditions to the periphery. The book offers a brief survey of 18th and 19th-century American music, but begins in earnest with Charles Ives and Carl Ruggles, and explores the era decade by decade up to composers born in the late 1950s such as Eve Beglarian and Joshua Fried. The book's table of contents is provided below, along with the primary composers focused on (among dozens more) in each chapter. Read an excerpt from Chapter 7 Read an excerpt from Chapter 13

Twentieth-century Poetry in English
Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love. (Reinhold Niebuhr) Motsuji Temple, Hiraizumi. Photograph taken by David Leong. T he period between 1901-1910 is often called the Edwardian Era after Queen Victoria's successor, King Edward VII. Sophisticates and the French also refer to this time as La Belle Epoque, or "Beautiful Age," as there was a definite leaning toward classical aesthetics. It was an era of beautiful clothes and the peak of luxury living for a select few: the very rich and the very privileged through birth. In retrospect we can see it is an era very separate from the 20th century despite belonging at its start. The attitudes and lifestyles of two decades were swept away by war and because the war was so huge in its impact, a new socialism and sense of personal identity was born. The masses started to reject the concept of privilege as the reason for a better life. Clothes worn after 1915 could probably be worn today in certain circumstances, but clothes before then are more in tune with the elaborate clothes of 1770 and would only be seen today at a costumed event or as bridal wear. Paris was the absolute mecca of the fashion world, Picasso was in his blue and pink period, the Wright brothers were making aviation history, and San Francisco was devastated by an earthquake in 1906. Photography reached a heyday and the first narrative film

1900: The United States enters the 20th century as a world power after its victory in the Spanish American War (1898). However, President William McKinley and the American nation are more preoccupied with expansion in the Pacific and Caribbean regions than European affairs. German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II, who had come to power in 1888, orders the strengthening of the Imperial Navy (then a small, coastal fleet) into a fleet with global capabilities. Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz is put in charge of this project; thus, it is known as the Tirpitz Plan. Adolf Hitler's father enrolls him in a technical high school in the city of Linz, hoping he can eventually become a civil servant, but Adolf disappoints his father and earns poor grades. 1901: President McKinley is assassinated in September by a crazed anarchist, and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt, hero of the Spanish-American War, becomes president. 1908: A young Adolf Hitler moves to Vienna to study art at the Vienna Academy of Fine arts, but he is not admitted to the school and ends up living in a homeless shelter the next year.

    Introduction
As Europe boiled and then exploded into the First World War and then the Second, artists struggled to find order in chaos, beauty in horror. Art dissected the world and reconstructed it in new images. The artist laughed at and cried with a society that was using a new found technology to destroy itself. Back to Top

Three and a half years were spent researching and assembling period film, photographs and other materials. In the 1960s, in the midst of unprecedented national prosperity, poverty was "rediscovered" by policymakers, the mass media and the American public. AMERICA'S WAR ON POVERTY reconsiders the poverty programs created during these turbulent times when America seemed to posses inexhaustible natural and technical resources and an abundance of goodwill. 60 mins each / 1995
GIVEN A CHANCE Early 1965 is a critical period of President Johnson's war on poverty. The Office of Economic Opportunity's goal to have the poor themselves design and run anti-poverty programs attracts strong opposition form local and state governments. Head Start is created to provide poor children with adequate nutrition, health care and the educational advantages that other American children enjoy, This program looks at Head Start in Mississippi, America's poorest state.
