Her group, the Roberta Martin Singers, was one of the most popular gospel groups of the 1950s and the first to mix male and female singers. Martin was born in 1907 in Helena, Arizona. Her family moved to Chicago, Illinois when she was ten years old and it was there that she got her start in gospel music. Martin took piano lessons from an aunt and began accompanying church choirs while she was still in high school. After graduation, she attended Northwestern University, where she studied to become a concert pianist. The Roberta Martin Singers toured across the United States and Europe in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. They recorded more than 100 compositions. I'll admit, I was never a huge fan of modern South African pop, particularly the slick, upbeat mbaqanga pop, or the choral music that was all the rage in the "world music" scene in the mid-'80s... I always thought, yeah, it's powerful and dynamic... but kinda boring. Imagine my delight, then, when I came across the "jazz" and "jive" music of the 1940s, '50s and '60s, with its delirious collision of ska-like African rhythms and American-style swing and rock melodies. It's some of the greatest music I've ever heard. Completely irresistible, although a little hard to track down. Here are recommendations from what I've heard so far. Recommended Records Dark City Sisters/Flying Jazz Queens "Dark City Sisters And Flying Jazz Queens" (Virgin-Earthworks, 1993) This isn't really the kind of South African "jive" I'm talking about here, although it is the bridge between the classic style and the more widely known township styles of the Mahotella Queens and other groups who came to our outside attention in the 1980s. I prefer the older style, but if you like more modern South African pop, this is a really nice disc, and is surprisingly modern, considering that these recordings date back to the early 1960s. A young Malathini plays on several of the tracks. (Note: this CD is frequently mistaken for a compilation, in fact it is material by two different bands, mainly by the Dark City Sisters, which was the more famous of the two groups.) These three legends, whose careers intersected starting in the 1940s, were a major inspiration for the burgeoning folk scene that took off in the '50s and '60s. Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the Centre East Theatre in the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, three current folk singers, who saw the legends as mentors will honor them in the tribute show "Glory Bound!." The production will bring together Odetta, Oscar Brand and Josh White Jr. to perform songs from each of the legends.
