Part I: The Reconstruction of American Society, 1865-1920s Lecture 01
Reconstructing the Nation

America has been split apart by three major wars: in the 1770's the American Revolution; in the 1970's the Vietnam War; and, in the middle of this period, the Civil War. Each war has dramatically changed the generation engaged in battles as well as the generations that followed. Lecture #01 will examine the repercussions of the Civil War, its effects on the American people, and the agreements and disagreements within the nation over the meanings of "Reconstruction."
See Calendar for course outline and lecture topics

Lecture 02

The "New South"
By the late 1860s, some Southerners were already calling for a more diversified economy cotton was no longer "king." Increasingly there was a move from farm to factory, and many people encouraged industrialization in the South and an increased capital investment in the Southern economy from outside sources. This lecture explores the economic transformation and the racial politics of the "New" South after the Civil War.

Jazz Jamboree was always a target for the Soviet authorities who felt the music was aural poison from depraved Western nations. Performance reviews then were understandably scathing (if printed at all), but even in later years critics were not averse to taking a shot at Warsaw's annual jazz bash. In the early 1950s, when be bop ruled the hipsters' world, jazz was forbidden in Poland. Political leaders saw it as the "music of rotten capitalists," and listening or playing it meant that you sympathized with communism's biggest enemy, the United States. In those times, Polish jazz giants of today such as Michal Urbaniak, Adam Makowicz and Zbigniew Namyslowski could listen to jazz only through Radio Luxembourg broadcasts, which were often jammed by communist authorities. But in 1956, three years after Stalin's death, Poland went through a political thaw: collective farms were abolished, unjustly sentenced prisoners were released and jazz was legalized. From then on, "the jazz plague infected young people's minds," as the communist party's daily

Street Memories
In a recent article in USYSA NETWORK. the writer stated that “the first generation of true American players has grown up, and is beginning to take over the grassroots coaching reins For young Americans who began playing soccer in the ‘40s in urban America, these words ring hollow. People writing about soccer seem to forget the generation of young Americans exposed to the game from their immigrant fathers three decades before Pele’s debut in the North American Soccer League in the mid-’70s. This paper is written to remind us that American soccer didn’t start with Pele. My earliest soccer memories were watching my father play in the late ‘30s and kicking a ball in the streets with my twin brother, Jim. I remember above all the pungent smell of liniment in the changing rooms for my father’s teams-they had no locker rooms, just places to change-and hang around with Jim as our father prepared for a match with his German-Hungarian dub. The “Hunkies an outstanding amateur soccer team in late 30s Philadelphia, were no different than the other ethnic clubs that dotted the Philadelphia landscape in this period. They were Scow on the Bluebelles. the First Germans, the Irish playing with the Celtics, along with union-backed teams like the Bricklayers and Hosiery Local, or corporate teams such as Bethlehem Steel and Fleischer Yarn. Ethnics dominated Philadelphia soccer, although Philadelphia nurtured a sizable number of home-grown talent.

By: Wayne Dawkins This wire service story caught my eye: Alicia Keys agreed to play the late Philippa Schuyler, who died at age 35, in a yet-to-be-titled movie that is being produced by Halle Berry. Keys also has Lena Horne-like physical beauty and a sexy magnetism that translates well on music videos and in live performances. Schuyler was a brilliant and tragic figure. She was born Aug. 2, 1931, the only child of legendary black journalist and author George Schuyler and white Texas artist and journalist Josephine Cogdell.

Sharing Your Witness to History
Sometimes, re-living the past is a GOOD thing! By Roberta Rand Have you ever considered that just by virtue of the years you've lived, you are a walking, breathing history book? If you're between 50 and 65, you may remember the end of World War II, game show scandals, "Elvis the Pelvis," dancing to the music on American Bandstand and watching the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. You may have been the first kid on your block to own saddle shoes, a hula hoop or a Daniel Boone coonskin cap. If you're between 50 and 65, you may remember the end of World War II, game show scandals, "Elvis the Pelvis" and watching the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. You lived through the days of fallout shelters, the Space Race and the Cold War. You remember Dick and Jane, the Edsel (the car that looked like it was sucking a lemon) and the first TV sets. You loved Lucy and marvelled when "Bonanza" was broadcast "in living color." You also witnessed the turmoil of Vietnam, the Civil Rights movement, and the assassinations of JFK, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. In short, you are a veritable encyclopedia of people, places and events that children nowadays experience mainly through dry-as-dust textbooks. Imagine making history come alive for kids by sharing what past historic events meant to you — when they were actually happening. You can bring dimension and meaning to history simply by recounting who you were and the times you grew up in.

Katie Roland
Bowen High School Arnold Hirsch's book, Making the Second Ghetto , is an interesting in depth look into the housing problems that plagued Chicago. The most interesting peas of this book are that it can be related to Chicago today and also to any rural or urban part of the country. Hirsch's knowledge of the subject and ample sources enable the reader to see all sides of this "problem" that took place in Chicago in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. The first ghettos in Chicago sprung up in relation to the Great Migration from 1915-1930. This large movement of African Americans from the South, across the Mason Dixon Line, to the North provided Chicago, as well as other major urban northern cities, with the problem of where to put all these people. Inadequate housing ensued and seems to continue still today. Ghettos, according to Hirsh, are inevitable because of politics and urban renewal. Because of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society legislation, many people had to react to the integration movements that was spreading throughout the
United States.

American Mafia : A History of Its Rise to Power > Customer Review #1: Good overview of the Mafia, though lacking depth

For anyone wishing an introduction to Mafia history in the United States this book is an excellent primer. Reppetto traces the rise of the American Mafia from late 19th century New Orleans to the heyday, just before the U.S. government started paying organized crime their due in attention and resources in the early 60s.
We are introduced to various luminaries of the underworld, their crimes and their fates (not surprisingly usually a violent death, exile or a prison cell). Reppettos section on Lucky Luciano is particularly good. Readers already familiar with the Mafia will find little new here. The book certainly doesnt rival Gus Russos seminal book from 2002, "The Outfit" which provides far more depth, representing infinitely more research and scholarship.

How Did the '50s Ever Beget the '60s?
E .J. Dionne Nostalgia for the 1950s looms large in American politics, crossing partisan and philosophical lines. The Right yearns for the stability, order, and authority ascribed to that decade. The Left recalls the period as a time of equitably distributed economic growth, strong labor unions, and some semblance of loyalty between employer and employee. So how could the stability of the 1950s give way to the uproar of the 1960s? Because the ’50s were not nearly as stable as they looked. The ’60s could be seen as the working out (not always successfully) of the many tensions the 1950s embodied: in family life, on racial matters, in politics, and in the culture. In Women and the Common Life , Christopher Lasch flatly declares that the family "where the husband goes out to work and the wife stays home...was a mid-twentieth-century innovation." Previously, less affluent women had always had to work, and more affluent women played active, if often unpaid, public roles. Betty Friedan’s powerful feminist polemic, The Feminine Mystique (1963), could be seen as a rational response to "the plight of suburban women" cut off from involvement in the public sphere. Something had to give in the organization of women’s roles, and the result was the rise of feminism. The country’s huge commitment in the ’50s to the education of both men and women also fed feminism. It was absurd to pretend that large numbers of educated women would choose to remain disengaged from public life.
