T H E W H I T E H O U S E The First Lady's Treasures Tour - National Museum of American History Help Site Map Text Only The First Lady begins her four day Save Our Treasures Tour in Washington, D.C. at the National Museum of American History. At this event, the First Lady will be joined by the President in announcing the start of a restoration project for the American flag displayed at the museum. This flag was made by Mrs. Mary Pickersgill of Baltimore, Maryland in 1813 and was flying over Ft. McHenry at dawn of September 14, 1814, when Francis Scott Key saw it, signifying that the forts commander, Major George Armistead, and his troops had withstood a British attack. Inspired, Key began writing about the sight and the siege of Ft. McHenry. This poem became a popular patriotic song, and in 1931, an Act of Congress declared The Star Spangled Banner our national anthem. Description: The flag measures 30' x 34' and weighs approximately 300 lbs. There are 15 white cotton 5-pointed stars, approximately 24" wide, on blue field of English wool bunting and 15 stripes 8 red and 7 white. Preservation Needs: The conservation effort includes a variety of elements, including the construction of barriers around Flag Hall prior to deinstallation of the flag; The deinstallation of the flag and its removal to the laboratory; Construction of a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory on the Museum premises (with windows so that visitors might view the work in progress); Non-federal employment of a team of conservators and conservation technicians; Equipment and supplies; and research to determine the optimum specifications of the showcase to prolong the life of the flag.

TALLAHASSEE Governor Jeb Bush and First Lady Columba Bush, in celebration of Black History Month, will display the Paul R. Jones Collection of African American art at the Governor’s Mansion during the month of February. Another part of the collection will also be on display at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science. “We are so pleased Mr. Jones has allowed us to share this wonderful exhibit with Floridians,” Governor Bush said. “ His work represents the diversity, history and culture that makes America so great and our African American heritage so rich. Florida will continue to celebrate Black History Month and these wonderful works of art pay tribute and honor the lives of our African American community.” With the culmination of more than 30 years of acquisitions, the Paul R. Jones Collection is one of the largest private holdings of African-American art in existence. More than 1,500 works by nearly 200 artists from diverse backgrounds comprise the Jones Collection, which was previously showcased in Jones’ Atlanta home. Jones recently donated a large number of his holdings to the University of Delaware, making it one of the most important gifts intended to further the knowledge and study of the contributions of African-American artists working since 1910 to the present.

TALLAHASSEE Governor Jeb Bush and First Lady Columba Bush announced the winners of the Black History Month essay contest for K-12 students at their sixth annual Black History Month reception which took place at the Governor’s Mansion. Students’ essays were focused on the theme, “What Impact Has an African American Entertainer, Singer, Dancer, Director, or Actor/Actress from Florida Had on My Life.” “Columba and I were very pleased to learn that more than 3,200 Florida school children participated in this year’s Black History Month essay contest. These contests give Florida students the opportunity to learn about the history of all Floridians,” Governor Bush said. “This year’s essay topic provides students with a chance to learn about the contributions of our state’s entertainers.” Winners were chosen in each of three categories: elementary school (grades K-5), middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). The contest essays were judged on the student’s inspirational and personal content that told how Florida’s civil rights beginning in 1948 and ending in 1969 impacted their life.

First Lady: Biography
"I know a lot, but you have to keep it to yourself when you're in this position." As First Lady, Thelma "Pat" Ryan Nixon generally kept both her opinions and her activities to herself, especially where the press was concerned. That silence led many to refer to her as "Plastic Pat," a woman whose smile seemed forever fixed on a face that rarely expressed ideas or emotions. But such a nickname overlooks the strong political opinions Pat Nixon expressed on particular issues. She responded to questions about the Vietnam War without evasion, publicly supported the Equal Rights Amendment and the appointment of women to Supreme Court vacancies, believed that abortion was a "private decision," and supported the goal of the Women's National Political Caucus of getting more women elected to government positions, regardless of their party affiliation. The First Lady also expressed a genuine concern for people. On a return trip from California to the White House, Pat learned of a flash flood in South Dakota that had killed two hundred people, amending her flight schedule so she could attend the memorial service. When an earthquake triggered an avalanche in the mountainous region of Peru, killing eighty thousand people and rendering another eighty thousand homeless, she worked with voluntary organizations to gather and transport needed supplies, helped launch an American relief drive, and then visited the devastated region herself.

Kennedy Library and Museum, visitors will see a gown made 44 years ago whose 50 yards of ivory silk taffeta have been carefully preserved for future generations of museum-goers to reflect upon and admire. Behind the scene of the First Lady's wedding dress display, which will be featured in a special exhibit on the wedding of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Lee Bouvier through Labor Day, is the work of the Textile Conservation Center (TCC) - a nonprofit regional conservation center and department of the American Textile History Museum in Lowell. "The project began last year in cooperation with JFK Library's curator, Frank Rigg, and designer, Amy Foreman," says Deirdre Windsor, Chief Conservator of the TCC," when we were invited to the Library to examine the condition of the dress fabric. The task of preparing the dress for exhibit was actually two projects: conserving the wedding gown itself, and custom-making a mannequin for display purposes."

Explore Web sites related to the Empire State Building, Superman, the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Monopoly® board game, and more! Superman, the legendary man of steel, returned to planet Earth on September 10, 1998, when 15 new stamps saluting the 1930s were issued by the U.S. Postal Service in Cleveland, Ohio where the super hero was "born." "From the Great Depression and the New Deal programs to architectural marvels and heroes of fact and fiction, the 1930s stamps portray a time when Americans worked together to overcome great hardship in hopes of a better day," said Deputy Postmaster General Michael Coughlin, who dedicated the stamps, part of the USPS's Celebrate the Century program, at the foot of Cleveland's Terminal Tower. When it opened in June 1930, the 52-story tower was among the tallest buildings in the world. It was the tallest building west of New York for 40 years.

MRS. GEORGE W. BUSH: FIRST LADY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Mrs. George W. Bush is the kind of First Lady who makes American women proud to stand up and sit down for what their husbands believe in again. As only the second President's wife in history to earn a mannish post-graduate degree, she has nevertheless redeemed herself by wisely conforming to her mother-in-law's strict "procreation and libation" mandate. Along with Bess Truman, Mrs. Bush is also one of only two First Ladies to immediately succeed a bona fide East Wing lezz-bean. Mrs. Bush answered your "Ask the White House" questions on July 1, 2003.

I am an education major in my first year of college and was wondering if you had any advice for a future teacher. Thanks for answering my question. Mrs. Bush:
As one who spent just over a year actually teaching, and over twenty years talking about it, my advice is simple. Find yourself a Stetson-wearing alpha male who'll let you stay home and Clorox cabinets, and GET OUT as soon as you can before those inquisitive little brats drive you stark raving mad.
