Here is a little bit about their history and in the following pages you will see their baseball cards, their bios and a list of the memorabilia with autographs they have for sale to add to your collections! The All American Girls Baseball League History The U.S. was well into World War II when P.K. Wrigley received word from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt that the 1943 Major League baseball season might be suspended due to the manpower shortage. He wanted Wrigley to do something to keep the baseball game going until the men got home from service. In the midst of removing barriers for women to be able to work in the industry to help the war effort, Wrigley joined forces with Branch Rickey and several small town entrepreneurs to create the first professional baseball league for women. A new, more open game using men's baseball rules, with 80 feet between bases, 55 feet for the pitching distance and nine players rather than ten. This made a faster action game. Wrigley and his advertising agent promoted the new "Girls Baseball" as wholesome family entertainment for war workers.

    First Ladies
They are the women who share the homes and lives of the presidents of the United States. They are neither elected nor appointed, yet they are some of the most influential women in the United States. There has never been a formal or official description for their roles, and each first lady has had to define what her role in her husband's administration would be. They are the good will ambassadors of the nation, and graciously host the visits of presidents, queens, kings, and heads of state from all over the world. First Ladies takes a look at the lives and duties of the first ladies of the second half of the twentieth century. It explores the roles defined by the first ladies themselves, from Eleanor Roosevelt to Hillary Rodham Clinton. First Ladies would be useful for classes on American History, Women's History, Political Science and American Culture. It is appropriate for middle school and high school. Discussion Questions
  • The position of first lady carries no official power. She is neither elected or appointed, but has enormous influence. How have first ladies used this unofficial influence to contribute to the welfare of the nation?

    First Lady: Biography
Before her husband ran for President in 1992, Hillary Clinton had become an accomplished attorney and was widely known in Democratic policymaking circles as a successful children's advocate. She was a Yale-trained lawyer who had made partner in one of Arkansas's most prestigious law firms. But most Americans became acquainted with Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1992 as she defended her husband, Arkansas governor and Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton, on the television show 60 Minutes . Amidst charges of Bill's infidelity, Hillary accompanied her husband and announced to the nation that she was "not sitting here because I'm some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette. I'm sitting here because I love him and I respect him, and I honor what he's been through and what we've been through together." She further declared, "If that's not enough for people, then heck, don't vote for him." But Americans did vote him, and in some respects, they voted for her as well. For throughout the campaign, Bill Clinton had assured the nation that if they elected him, they would essentially get "two for the price of one." While Americans might have liked the gregarious, smooth-talking Bill Clinton, they were less sure about Hillary. Though her performance on

2-04-02: News at Home Presidency: Is Laura Bush a Good First Lady at a Time Like This?
    By Gayle V. Fischer
Ms. Fischer teaches history at Salem State College in Massachusetts. We know that former First Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton "spoke" to Eleanor Roosevelt, especially in times of stress. Did First Lady Laura Bush turn to any of her predecessors after the acts of terrorism on September 11, 2001? The United States of America is a country founded in war; the American Revolution (or War for Independence) began with the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775. Over the centuries, armed conflictdomestic and foreignhas characterized much of U.S. history, from the massacres of Native Americans to the War of 1812 to the Mexican-American War to the Civil War to the Spanish-American War to the occupation of the Dominican Republic by U.S. Marines to World War I and World War II and the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War to the bombings of Libya in the 1980s and the attacks on Iraq in the 1990s. Given the U.S.'s martial legacy it is not surprising that First Ladies have always been involved in the country's wars. They have served as supporters, as critics, as volunteers, as nurses, and as wives, mothers, and sisters of male soldiers. The U.S. Constitution is silent about the wife of the president, perhaps the second most powerful person in the country; no formalpeacetime or wartimejob description exists. The non-elected, non-appointed, non-paid wife of the Commander-in-Chief (President) shoulders her own share of burdens and responsibilities during times of war. No one First Lady defined the wartime role for all. However, each has valuable lessons to impart to "Comforter in Chief" Laura Bush if she cares to learn from the past.

So it may seem surprising that the history of women In 1897, The american Chess Magazinehad this comment On June 22,1897 the first ladies international chess
    http://www.chessmuseum.org/history1198.html
Article 3 EARLY WOMEN IN AMERICAN CHESS by Robert John McCrary Today only a small percentage of organized chess players are women. So it may seem surprising that the history of women players in the United States can be traced almost as far back as that of male players. In fact, women chess players in the US have been found as early as the first decade of the nineteenth century. (Note that Benjamin Franklin's female opponents were European, so do not count.) According to The Book of The First American Chess Congress ,(p. 346) one of these early women players was a Mrs. Gaines, the wife of the commandant of Fort Stoddard, where Aaron Burr was detained upon his arrest. Burr reportedly played chess with her during his detainment. Four other women players are also known in that same decade of 1800-1810. They were all residents of Charleston, SC, where they had their own little playing circle. Interestingly, Paul Morphy's father and grandfather lived in Charleston at that same time, but there is no direct evidence of a connection between the Morphy family and those early women players. Perhaps the first published game by an American woman player appeared in an 8-page brochure published in 1830. The title of that brochure stated that it included a "game played by a Lady of Philadelphia with Maelzel's Automaton." This author has not seen either the brochure or the game, but the bibliographical description of the brochure implies that the game was printed in it.
