"First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image" examines the evolving role of the first lady. The exhibition presents a new understanding of the demanding responsibilities of presidential wives and hostesses and looks at the relationship between the media and the woman in the White House. The exhibition is divided into three main sections and encompasses some 300 campaign and personal items and more than 500 illustrations and photographs. The First Lady: Political Role Many first ladies, especially in the 19th century, took on their new position with deep ambivalence. Notions of proper conduct for women made the role a contradiction, and forced first ladies to walk a fine line between public supporting their husbands and avoiding the appearance of interfering in politics. The first section of the exhibition reveals how different women have responded to the constraints and possibilities of the role: as a social partner and hostess, a promoter of culture and historic preservation, an advocate of social causes, and a campaigner and political partner with the president. The Gown Gallery The second section of the exhibition presents many first ladies, delves into history of these artifacts and of the First Ladies Collection, and offers a look at the conservation efforts required to put the fragile textiles on display. In dim light to protect the fabrics, dresses of sixteen first ladies are displayed nearby, from Dolley Madison to Nancy Reagan. Photographs show portraits of the women and details of their gowns, and exhibit labels describe the makers, materials, and history of the dresses, as well as the events to which the first ladies wore these garments.

Portraits of the Presidents and First Ladies,1789-Present
In the early morning hours of June 6 , 1944, Americans received word that three years of concerted war efforts had finally culminated in D-day military jargon for the undisclosed time of a planned British and American action. During the night, over 5,300 ships and 11,000 planes had crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy. The goal of every soldier and civilian involved in that effort was to drive the German military back to Berlin by opening a western front in Europe. General Dwight David Eisenhower was in command of the invasion, which was code-named Operation Overlord. Just months prior, the 1915 West Point graduate had led the invasion of French North Africa
