Note that Bloomsbury have continued the successful straight-to-trade-paperback strategy they began with Mr. Hoban's previous novel, Angelica's Grotto, so as yet there is no hardcover edition of Amaryllis.
AVAILABILITY
Amaryllis Night and Day can be ordered from Bloomsbury's own Web site (just search the title or "Russell Hoban"), or via Amazon UK . Unfortunately, it hasn't been released in the US yet, but US readers can order copies via Web from the aforementioned sites.
DESCRIPTION:
More than one member of The Kraken has expressed the view that Amaryllis is Russ's best book since Fremder , and I'd have to throw my cap in that corner, too. Amaryllis is a graceful return to the magical realism that characterized books like The Medusa Frequency and The Lion of Boaz-Jachin and Jachin-Boaz, Here's the copy from the jacket: The first time Peter Diggs saw Amaryllis she was at a bus stop where the street sign said BALSAMIC although there was nothing vinegary about the place. The bus was unthinkably tall, made of yellow, orange and pink rice paper and bamboo, lit from within like a Japanese lantern. That was a dream, but where this romance goes as the dream begins to intersect reality (not unlike a Mobius strip) is nothing that a reader can quite prepare for.

How to Plant an Amaryllis Bulb
by Gayla Sanders
Although there are many plants that are forced to bloom indoors during the winter holiday season, the popularity of the amaryllis ( Hippeastrum lies in its ease of care and its large, lily-like blooms that are so reminiscent of the flowers of summer. Flower colour ranges from red as the most popular, to pink, white, yellow and mixed. Dwarf varieties with smaller foliage and flowers are available but they tend to be more expensive and slightly harder to care for. The general rule is the smaller the bulb, the smaller the bloom. The holidays are probably the worst time financially to purchase this plant. Everyone wants one when they see the beautiful green foliage and bright flowers lining department shelves and corner market plant stands. As a result prices are inflated. They can be anywhere between 12-30 dollars Canadian minimum. If you purchase a dry bulb (no pot) in the fall and plant it up yourself you can save money (5-20 dollars Canadian), the selection of varieties is greater, and you can chose your own decorative pot instead of settling for the generic pots the full bloom plants come in. If you'd like your bulb to bloom in time for Christmas, pot it up by mid-November. This plant can be grown outside anytime of the year in warmer, frost-free climates. Either way getting this bulb ready to grow is simple and will take only a few minutes and a bit of preparation.

Previous Category Catalog Order Info The hybrid amaryllis (Hippeastrum) is a tender bulb easily grown in pots. Amaryllis can be grown outdoors throughout the year in mild climates, but must be grown indoors in Nebraska except during the warm summer months. Amaryllis is prized for its huge showy flowers ranging from scarlet or crimson to white in color, and often striped or mottled. Most amaryllis are Dutch or African hybrids selected for flower size, color and ease of forcing. The usual flowering season is from February to April. The foliage grows during spring and summer, ripening early in the fall if temperatures are low and the soil is allowed to dry out. The bulb normally remains dormant until late winter (December or January). Photo courtesy Florida Agricultural Information Retrieval The preferred soil mix for amaryllis is high in organic matter such as two parts of loam soil to one part of perlite to one part of well rotted manure. If manure is not available, another source of organic matter, such as peat, leaf mold, composted bark or wood, or compost, may be used.

I'd love to hear from you. Forcing Amaryllis The name "Amaryllis," in Greek, means 'sparkling." And if you've ever had one of these lovelies bloom in your home in the dead of winter, I'm sure you'll agree that this is an apt description of a great plant. Amaryllis come in many colors, from pure white to pure red, and many shades of pink in-between. One of my favorite pinks is "Apple Blossom" which really does look like its namesake. Some, like the new "Charisma", are bi-tones, starting at the top of the flower, where the petals are light red, shading on down to the bottoms of the lower petals which are white flecked with red. Amaryllis are bulbs that are simply made for forcing - and if you buy several and start them at two or three week intervals, starting in September, it's possible to have them blooming from Christmas through April or even May - you know - those times when we're desperate for blooms! Potting them up is a snap. If you are only planting one, you need a pot that is about 3-4" wider than the bulb, with good drainage. Make sure it is relatively heavy, as an amaryllis can grow to be over two feet tall - and when those two feet are topped with several blooms, the plant can get top-heavy.

Amaryllis belladonna L.
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Common Name: belladonna lily, March lily, naked lady
Amaryllis belladonna grows in the South Western Cape. The bulb is typically large, brown and rounded and has a moderate growth rate. The large clusters of scented, trumpet-shaped pink or white flowers are carried on a long purplish-red and green stem appearing 50cm above the soil. Up to twelve flowers are produced from the flowering stem. These flowers are 10cm long and apically flare open about 8cm. Protruding from each flower is a long upturned style amongst a group of large curved anthers. The anthers are black and shiny at first, but split open to reveal masses of sticky white pollen. The inflorescence tends to face the direction that receives the most sun. Although most flowers are pale pink, white and dark pink forms occur. The strap-like leaves are deciduous and are produced after flowering. The leaves remain green throughout the winter period. The leaves produce a starch, which is stored in the bulb. In summer the leaves die back and the bulb becomes dormant. This strange phenomenon of flowering before the leaves appear is known as hysteranthy. The belladonna lily's specific flowering time is late summer, February and March.

Catalog Garden Info ... About Us
An Amaryllis is one of the easiest Christmas plants to grow as well as to save from year to year. Only a few simple procedures are needed. Growing a New Amaryllis
Planting Soil and Depth
: Plant an amaryllis in any good potting soil; however, only plant the bulb halfway. In other words, the top half of the bulb is exposed. Watering : Water at planting time and do not water again until you see green growth. If you water too much before you see growth, the roots will rot and growth will be delayed or aborted. Once growth has started, water when the top of the soil is dry to the touch. Once to twice a week is necessary, depending on the warmth of the home. Flowering : The flower stalk often appears before the leaves, but not always. If only leaves appear, be patient. On occasion you will find a stubborn amaryllis that will not flower until summer time, though this is rare. At Christmas time, an amaryllis will flower about six weeks after planting. When the petals have faded remove the top of the flower stalk; after the stalk has turned yellow, cut it off. Saving an Amaryllis
Treat It As A Houseplant
: After the flower is gone, treat the plant as you would any houseplant until summer. (Water weekly and begin weekly fertilizing in March.)

Reprint. amaryllis. amaryllis are grown in the open field or in beds and borders around the home. amaryllis bulbs can be purchased at your garden supply store.
http://www.floridaplants.com/horticulture/amarylli.htm
Back to Fact Sheet Index Reprint Amaryllis Amaryllis are grown in the open field or in beds and borders around the home. They are excellent landscape subjects for use as individual specimens, in mass plantings, in beds, or as part of the border planting around home grounds and in park plantings. Those planted in the garden should be set so that the top of the bulb is just covered with soil. You do not have to dig each year or to "dry off" as commonly believed. It is better to dig, separate, and replant each year as an aid to uniform flowering and larger flowers. This practice also aids in reducing disease and insect pests, since unhealthy bulbs can be graded out and destroyed at this time. Fertilizer is an important item if you want to keep them blooming. High nitrogen fertilizers will make the plant fat and green but have few blooms. The bulbs that bloom best are those that are given a small amount of a low nitrogen fertilizer. Apply about a pound of 4-8-8-, 3-9-9, or 5-10-10 (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium) per 100 square feet of flower bed. Add another half a coffee can of fertilizer as needed to keep the amaryllis healthy. This will help give you a proud display of bloom next year. If the plants grow rampant on little or no food, try planting them in less fertile soil next time. Rationing water during the late growing stages will help the bulb become dormant.

Background Information:
I give each group of two students a mature amaryllis bulb. They are given pots and soil with minimal planting instructions. Their overall task is to raise the next generation of amaryllis, which appeals to them as they are the next generation. I require that they keep a log noting timing and amounts of water and fertilizer, growth of bloom stem and leaves in cm, and any other information that they choose, such as sun and temperature conditions. When the flowers open, they are to transfer the pollen from the male parts to the female part of the flower by hand. Some of my classes predict whether self-pollination or cross-pollination with another plant with the same or different colored flowers will produce the most seeds. They must improvise to find ways to mark flowers and prevent further pollination. The seeds mature in the ripening ovary over the next few weeks. When the ovary splits it is time to count the seeds and plant them. Number of seeds and germination rates are recorded. When the seedlings appear, I tell them that they have passed "plant." Students are allowed to take their seedlings home if they wish. I take the mature bulbs and seedlings home and plant them in my garden for the summer and bring them in after the first frost to dry for January planting. This keeps the cost down. It takes three years to produce a bulb that will flower.
