Amaryllis
Paul A. Thomas, Extension Horticulturist The large, bell-shaped or lily-like flowers of the amaryllis and its hybrids make excellent garden subjects and pot plants. They can be grown as garden plants from Macon southward in Georgia. In these areas, they are used in beds, borders and for specimen plants. In north Georgia, they make excellent pot plants and spring and summer garden plants. When used as individual specimens, in mass plantings, as part of perennial borders or as low plantings in front of shrub borders, amaryllis provide spectacular flower effects. They have a wide range of flower colors from red, pink and white to combinations of these. Their large, robust flowers of beautiful textures add to their appeal. When properly handled and cared for properly, an amaryllis bulb may produce flowers for up to 75 years. Good quality bulbs of named varieties may produce up to six flowers on a single stalk.
Growing in Containers
When grown in containers, amaryllis prefer a sandy-loam soil mix. You can mix your own by combining one part leaf mold or composted manure, one part loamy soil, and one part coarse sand. Some garden centers also sell soil mixes especially for bulbs. The mixture should be slightly acid, with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8.

I write poetry very often and so I will be posting some of my poems here on this site. I will also post poems written by other people giving that they cooperate and submit them to me. Every now and then a quote, passage, or poem will catch my interest and I'll post those occasionally as well. There is also a photo page, cause I know how you people love looking at pictures. It's rather small at the moment, but hopefully I will be able to expand it as I receive photos from people. I hope you enjoy my page, if not, pretend you do.

Previous Category Catalog Order Info The hybrid amaryllis (Hippeastrum) is a tender bulb easily grown in pots. Amaryllis can be grown outdoors throughout the year in mild climates, but must be grown indoors in Nebraska except during the warm summer months. Amaryllis is prized for its huge showy flowers ranging from scarlet or crimson to white in color, and often striped or mottled. Most amaryllis are Dutch or African hybrids selected for flower size, color and ease of forcing. The usual flowering season is from February to April. The foliage grows during spring and summer, ripening early in the fall if temperatures are low and the soil is allowed to dry out. The bulb normally remains dormant until late winter (December or January). Photo courtesy Florida Agricultural Information Retrieval The preferred soil mix for amaryllis is high in organic matter such as two parts of loam soil to one part of perlite to one part of well rotted manure. If manure is not available, another source of organic matter, such as peat, leaf mold, composted bark or wood, or compost, may be used.

Hippeastrum has been known as amaryllis for so long that many gardeners think that is the generic name; to compound the confusion, plants of the true genus Amaryllis are more familiar as belladonna lilies. The so-called amaryllis includes 1,300 species that bloom white, pink, red or orange, sometimes striped or frilled according to hybrid. It is characterized by clusters of three or more enormous lily-like flowerssome as much as 8 to 10 inches in diameterborne at the top of leafless 1- to 2-foot stems in winter and spring. The flower stalks grow with amazing speed, usually before or at the same time that new leaves arise from the bulbs. Most large bulbs send up a second flower stalk about the time that the first one begins to fade. The dark green strap-like leaves grow 18 to 24 inches long. In some hybrids the foliage is evergreen or nearly evergreen, but most amaryllis foliage is deciduous and must be allowed to grow until late summer or early fall, when it withers and dies. 'Nymph' That beautiful hybrid amaryllis you received for the holidays can become a prolific bloomer if you will follow a few simple steps. Whether you continue to grow your bulb in a container or transplant it outdoors, you can expect lush blooms year after year.

Spring Bulb Guide
Amaryllis
Amaryllis
Syn.: Hippeastrum (actually the correct name)
Common name: Amaryllis A certain amount of confusion exists surrounding 'Hippeastrum', the plant's scientific name, and 'Amaryllis', its common name. The Hippeastrum, a bulbous plant that originated in South Africa, has 4 to 6 large flowers on a hollow stem. Amaryllis belladonna is another bulbous plant from South Africa, but this plant has 6 to 12 smaller flowers on a solid flower stem. For reasons which are difficult to fathom but certainly confusing, the Hippeastrum is known almost the world-over as 'Amaryllis'. The genus, Hippeastrum is composed of several species, while Amaryllis belladonna is the only species in the genus, Amaryllis. The numerous Hippeastrum cultivars being grown were developed from hybridizations involving several species. Although the Hippeastrum can be grown outside in the garden in climatic zones 9 and 10, this bulbous plant is still much more suitable for bringing into flower indoors. The nice thing about forcing Amaryllis bulbs into flower inside the home is that it is so simple to do. What's more, once the bulbs have flowered, they can be stored and brought into to flower again.
Amaryllis 'Hercules Amaryllis bulbs always make welcome gifts, especially since they are usually sold in lovely boxes displaying an illustration of the cultivar inside. In addition to the bulb, the boxes often contain a pot and the potting soil required to bring the bulb into flower. The amaryllis is ideal for people who have little time or inclination to spend on high-maintenance flowers and plants. Amaryllis are also available already potted and growing.

AMARYLLIS RE-BLOOM Details to the nth Degree!
(It's actually very easy.)
To get amaryllis flower bulbs to re-bloom next year: Following are OPTIMAL conditions. For most people, ideal conditions are not always possible. Don't worry! Just get as close as you can to the following - the amaryllis is a trouper and will do its best to accommodate. The main things: 1) feed it; 2) keep it in a pot that is sized "just right" and not too big; 3) keep the soil moist, never soggy; 4) give the bulb a rest for two or three months in early fall. Bare Amaryllis bulb
  • Fertilize amaryllis regularly during the growth cycle starting one month after planting (when active growth is underway). Use regular houseplant food in either:
    • a complete NPK liquid fertilizer, applied 2x per month,
    • or a long-lasting, balanced, timed-release fertilizer,applied as needed.
  • After the bloom cycle finishes, cut off the stems just above the bulb nose.
  • Continue to grow the strappy-leaved plant in a warm spot in bright light, watering regularly to keep soil moist. Continue to fertilize as above.
  • Amaryllis may be moved out-of-doors over the summer (you can either sink the whole pot into the soil or keep it as a container plant). Bring inside in September or before first frost.
