Patient Notes
Dementia and Alzheimer's disease
VOL 106 / NO 5 / OCTOBER 15, 1999 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE We all dread hearing the word "dementia," particularly because many people believe it is the same as "crazy." In fact, dementia is a deterioration of the ability to think and remember clearly and to learn as quickly as we once did. Dementia has a number of causes and many symptoms. One of the most common and well-known causes is Alzheimer's disease. Although dementia is one of the medical conditions most feared by older adults, it occurs in only about 15% of people between the ages of 65 and 80. The incidence then goes up for a few years but often decreases for the very elderly. The fact remains that many of us will face problems with dementia in our parents, spouse, friends, or even in ourselves. What are the symptoms?
Some memory loss is normal as we age. A defining characteristic of dementia is significant progressive loss of memory, judgment, and other mental skills. Eventually this can limit a person's ability to handle everyday activities. Symptoms can range from depression to agitation and tend to vary widely from patient to patient. Impaired judgment is often a serious concern. What should you do if you notice symptoms?
