How to reduce your risk of developing dementia
Although it is not possible to guarantee that we will not develop Alzheimer's disease, there are a number of changes that we can all make to our lifestyles that might help to reduce the risk of developing dementia. The good news is that these changes will also help to reduce of risk of developing other health problems as well (such as heart disease, strokes and cancer).
1. Don't smoke
It was once thought that smoking might actually help protect against dementia, but recent research has found that the reverse is more likely. It is believed that harmful molecules in cigarette smoke (known as free radicals) damage the blood vessels (and possibly brain cells) and may increase the risk of dementia. This is because such damage to the blood vessels can prevent the blood from circulating properly through the body and brain. The brain then receives less than the optimal amount of oxygen and this can lead to vascular dementia. By giving up smoking the number of free radicals in the body is lowered and the chance of damage to the blood vessels is reduced. Giving up smoking also reduces the risk of developing certain cancers, heart disease and strokes. For more on the effects of smoking and help with giving up smoking, please

They may be caused by poor diet, lack of sleep, or too many medicines, for example. Feelings of loneliness, boredom, or depression also can cause forgetfulness. These problems are serious and should be treated. Often they can be reversed. Sometimes, however, mental changes are caused by diseases that permanently damage brain cells. The term dementia describes a medical condition that is caused by changes in the normal activity of very sensitive brain cells. These changes in the way the brain works can affect memory, speech, and the ability to carry out daily activities. Multi-infarct dementia is the most common form of vascular dementia, and accounts for 10-20% of all cases of progressive, or gradually worsening, dementia. It usually affects people between the ages of 60-75, and is more likely to occur in men than women.

For more detailed information contact your health care provider
about options that may be available for your specific situation. DESCRIPTION Alzheimer's disease is a common type of dementia, or decline in intellectual function. This disorder was first identified in 1907 by a German neurologist named Alois Alzheimer. There are currently more than 4 million people in the United States who suffer from Alzheimer's disease. It afflicts 10 percent of Americans over the age of 65 and as many as 50 percent of those over 85 years of age. Dementia is the fourth leading cause of death in those over 60, while Alzheimer's alone kills 100,000 people per year in the United States. However, Alzheimer's disease does not affect elderly people only, but may strike when a person is in his or her 40's. Many people worry that their forgetfulness is a sign of Alzheimer's disease. Most of us forget where we have put our keys or other everyday objects at one time or another, but this is not an indication of Alzheimer's disease. A good example of the difference between forgetfulness and dementia is the following: If you do not remember where you put your glasses, that is forgetfulness; if you do not remember that you wear glasses, that may be sign of dementia. This disorder is characterized by progressive mental deterioration, to such a degree that it interferes with the ability to function socially and at work:

Alzheimer's disease is an illness which is characterised by dementia. It was named after Alois Alzheimer, a German doctor who first described it in 1907. Dementia is the term given to a group of symptoms, which includes confusion, memory loss, poor problem-solving and poor concentration. There are many diseases which lead to dementia, the most common being Alzheimer's disease, which accounts for about 60 per cent of all cases. People with dementia differ in terms of which signs and symptoms they have and the speed and extent to which their dementia progresses - problems vary, even day to day. Dementia usually occurs in older people. About 3 in 100 people over the age of 65 are affected and 10-15 in 100 people over the age of 80. Dementia in people under 65 is known as early onset dementia (previously known as pre-senile dementia) and is rare, affecting only 1 in 1000 people. Symptoms
The symptoms of Alzheimer's disease vary from one person to another, depending on how far it has progressed. People with the disease usually experience:
    • Confusion. This may include misunderstanding who or where they are.

diet, the development of new medications, and lifestyle may someday help preventor reverse the damage caused by multiinfarct dementia or Alzheimer s disease.
    http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/alzheimers/a_forget.htm
Forgetfulness in Old Age Many people are afraid that growing old means losing the ability to think, reason, or remember. They worry when they feel confused or forgetful that these feelings are the first signs of senility. In the past, doctors dismissed memory loss, confusion, or similar behaviors as a normal part of aging. However, scientists now know that most people remain alert and capable as they age. They also know that people who experience changes in personality, behavior, or skills may be suffering from a form of brain disease called dementia The term dementia describes a group of symptoms that usually are caused by changes in the normal activity of very sensitive brain cells. Dementia seriously interferes with a person's ability to carry out daily activities. Dementia is irreversible - it cannot be cured. However, there are many conditions with symptoms that seem like dementia but aren't. These reversible conditions can be caused by problems such as a high fever, poor nutrition, a bad reaction to a medicine, or a minor head injury. Although not dementia, medical problems like these can be serious and should be treated by a doctor as soon as possible. Sometimes older people have emotional problems that are mistaken for dementia. Feeling sad, lonely, worried, or bored may be more common for older people facing retirement or handling the death of a relative or friend. Adapting to these changes can leave some people feeling confused or forgetful. Emotional problems can be helped by supportive friends and family, or by professional help from a counselor.

Homocysteine (pronounced homo-SIS-teen) is an amino acid and is found normally in the body. Homocysteine’s metabolism is linked to that of several vitamins, especially folic acid, B6, and B12. Deficiencies of those vitamins may cause elevated levels of homocysteine. In recent years, studies have accumulated suggesting that a high level of homocysteine increases a person's chance of developing heart disease, stroke, alzheimer’s disease and peripheral vascular disease (a reduced blood flow to the hands and feet). In September 1995, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) convened a special panel to review the scientific evidence about homocysteine's possible link to heart disease. The homocysteine information that follows is based on the panel's conclusions.

    (Dietary and Lifestyle Implications):
In patients having Alzheimer's disease the brain is somewhat shrunken and, on postmortum examination, a definite loss of nervous tissue is noted. Examination of the brain tissues under a microscope reveals small bundles of material called senile plaques, scattered throughout the tissues. The more plaques that are present, the worse is the mental condition of the patient. Chemical analysis reveals the presence of the metal aluminum at the core of each plaque and within many of the cells found in the plaques. Evidence is accumulating to indicate that aluminum may be involved in the formation of the plaques, and it is therefore a prime suspect as the initial cause of the disease. Five population studies now link Alzheimer's disease to aluminum in drinking water. As early as 1885, aluminum was shown to be toxic to the nervous tissues of animals. Aluminum can also produce a degeneration of the nervous tissues in cats and rabbits that resembles in some ways that seen in the brains of human patients with Alzheimer's disease. Patients with diseased kidneys accumulate large amounts of aluminum in their bodies from medications and from kidney-machine solutions that have been used until recently. This accumulation results in a severe mental deterioration.

    A Natural Remedy for Alzheimer's !
That the daily seafood diet is a natural remedy for Alzheimer's is truly wonderful news - and more recent biomedical proof that my discovery is correct. But the most wonderful thing is that we - every one of us - can now go ahead and do something about Alzheimer's, instead of waiting helplessly to find out if an ill fate will destroy our mind - or pass us by.
This also offers great good hope that a daily diet high in seafood - the higher the better - will arrest Alzheimer's and, perhaps, even cure it. This remains to be seen though, but now we have every reason in the world to give it a try.
That it also lowers the risk of heart disease - as I keep on saying in these pages - is a great wonderful bonus.
Again though, all the evidence points to the complete natural range of the 72+ trace elements in seafood. The author states that egg is the only other source of DHA, and this is a bit iffy, depending upon what the hens are fed. So, this raises the question why Alzheimer's was extremely rare not so long ago here - and why it is still extremely rare in Sri Lanka, China and Japan?
And this tallies very nicely with the fact that the neglect of over 60 trace elements by our modern agriculture has resulted in the severe deficiency, or total lack of these trace elements in our daily food - as well with the fact that the traditional agriculture in these eastern countries maintains the complete range of the 72+ trace elements in their food, via the return of all life-wastes to the soil, and along with them, all of the 72+ nutritional trace elements.

(Frequently Asked Questions) What are the Myths about Alzheimer's Disease "Does Aluminum Cause Alzheimer's disease?
There have been so many stories and myths about Alzheimer's disease that it boggles the mind. If one were to believe all of them, you wouldn't cook in aluminum pots nor drink sodas from aluminum cans. I was at an Alzheimer's conference years ago when a man burst through the door waving a sign that said "Aluminum causes Alzheimer's. They kicked him out, but that is not to say that aluminum could not be the cause. Most experts will tell you, however, that aluminum is not a cause of Alzheimer's disease. You can safely continue using your antiperspirants, drink the city water (aluminum is used in some water systems to remove silt), wrap left-overs in aluminum foil, take antacids, and cook with your aluminum pots and pans.¾ In my opinion, it truly depends on who you speak to. Personally, I really do not know the cause of Alzheimer's and I really don't know anyone who does.
