RICHMOND HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 380 Hub Etchison Parkway; Richmond, IN 47374 phone: (765) 973-3338 e-mail: rhsalum@rcs.k12.in.us WHAT IS THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION? WHAT IS OUR MISSION? The success of Richmond’s economic competitiveness and quality of life depends, to a large extent, on the quality and number of years of higher education our young people receive. Employers in our community require employees that can not only read, write and solve problems, but also communicate and demonstrate leadership skills. Without skilled employees, Richmond’s economic future is uncertain. To be an economic leader in our community, state and nation, we must first be a leader in the education of our children. Yes, it's true. Richmond High School has an alumni association and we want to tell you about it. In 1990, after decades of increasing numbers of high school students dropping out, or not going to college after high school graduation, the superintendent's office and community business leaders, decided it was time for a "culture change". Hence, the Richmond College Incentive Plan was born. The goal of the Richmond College Incentive Plan (RCIP) is a tuition free education at any of the local colleges. Even though the RHS/Morton High School Alumni Association was founded one hundred years earlier (1890), it had not been very active. However, the RCIP founders felt an Alumni Association was the perfect type of organization to administer their program so the Association was revitalized. After ten years of hard work, members of the Class of 2000 were the first recipients of the Richmond College Incentive Plan scholarship dollars.

Owlet Alumni Newsletter of the HPHS Alumni Organization Volume III Number 1 * Hartford, Connecticut * Fall 2001 Editorial Edition class, a tiny sample of the middle class, and no rich kids at all. Why? Two forces are at work. First, there's the pressure on responsible parents to educate their kids somewhere else. Whether these families are right or not that the quality of education is inferior in the inner city, that's the perception, and it skims off lots of kids whose parents can afford something else. Kids with big academic potential or exceptional athletic ability or musical gifts are rarely seen now. Their parents make other arrangements, long before high school. If necessary, they "reside" with a relative in the suburbs. Anything to steer clear of the Hartford schools. The other force is the poor quality of reading instruction in our lower grades. Our schools abandoned traditional methods of reading instruction a generation ago, and now only a small minority of kids can read at grade level by the time they reach high school age. They have been promoted without regard to reading fluency. That's changing now, but the reforms are recent, and they are still failing in alarming numbers each year at HPHS; half a generation of this has changed the school. In 2001, HPHS graduated so few students that the administration "forgot" to hire the Bushnell and sent them forth (at a substantial cash savings) from an ugly gymnasium in the new Learning Corridor magnet school.

An idea that has been talked about for a long time finally began to take shape during the 2002-2003 school year. A core group of graduates met several times to discuss the purpose and organization of an alumni association, to appoint officers and to apply for tax exempt status.
Members of the Executive Board are President Matthew D'Attilio ('89) Vice President David Banaszynski ('76), Secretary Rachel de Hartog ('95) and Treasurer Rick Monroe, SHS Principal. Other Directors are Desty Lorino ('75), Barb (Konrad) Schulte ('72), Dick Sinclair ('43) Sam Dickman ('89) and Andy Zukrow ('82).
The group will be working at refining their purpose over the next several months, but generally they will help to improve communications with all alumni (including assistance with reunions), promote the school and encourage alumni donations for special projects. The group has also decided to publish a second edition of the alumni newsletter, "Connections". The newsletter will be mailed to graduates with reliable addresses as funding permits. The groups is also considering a social event for alumni, to be held at the high school the weekend of Thanksgiving break.
