The intent of the school's program is to address inappropriate student behaviour and to give special help to the student in solving his/her problems rather than merely to punish and control him/her. The program will not be a focus on the negative thought about why young people get into trouble, but rather on the positive aspects of how they develop into healthy, productive adults. Young people become productive when they are able to feel useful and competent, possess a sense of belonging, and see themselves and others in a positive light. They should never have to carry the added burden of being tagged with negative labels. The students that the Madison Alternative program intends to help would need to change their attitudes, values, and motivation toward education, themselves, and others. The students can be identified as having one or more of the following characteristics: Negative attitude toward school. School is not a place they enjoy and want to spend their time.
