Madison Alternative School
300 Bellevue Dr
Richmond KY 40475 Phone: (859) 624-4565
Fax: (859) 624-4566 The purpose of Madison Alternative School is to help students develop more positive attitudes towards themselves, their education, and others with whom they come in contact. The intent of the school's program is to address inappropriate student behaviour and to give special help to the student in solving his/her problems rather than merely to punish and control him/her. The program will not be a focus on the negative thought about why young people get into trouble, but rather on the positive aspects of how they develop into healthy, productive adults. Young people become productive when they are able to feel useful and competent, possess a sense of belonging, and see themselves and others in a positive light. They should never have to carry the added burden of being tagged with negative labels. The students that the Madison Alternative program intends to help would need to change their attitudes, values, and motivation toward education, themselves, and others. The students can be identified as having one or more of the following characteristics:
  • Negative attitude toward school. School is not a place they enjoy and want to spend their time.

"It's important to our city that people with the means to choose, choose our schools. That's why our goal must be to make every Chicago public school a school of choice - and by that I mean that it must be a school that families of every income choose to attend - no matter what the obstacles or challenges." Arne Duncan, CEO Chicago Public Schools To achieve its goal of transforming neighborhood schools into schools of choice, the Chicago public school system has committed itself to three core strategies:
    • Literacy Reading is the foundation skill, the one that allows children to learn everything else. If we raise the level of reading skills, we will raise performance across every other subject. Human Capital Improving the quality of teachers and principals - an effort that includes recruiting from better colleges and hiring earlier in the year. Creating More Learning Opportunities Includes expanded pre-school, after-school and summer school programs, all of which have grown year after year.
CMSI is a comprehensive program that will transform the way mathematics and science are taught and supported throughout the Chicago Public Schools from the classroom, to the school, to the areas, to the whole district and thus transform our students' achievement in these essential subjects. For more information, visit the Chicago Math and Science Initiative website at:
