Students come to this parent cooperative, open education, K-8 school from all over the Santa Barbara School District. Enrollment is limited by the total space: ten classrooms and a library-child care room. The Open Alternative Child Care program was established in the fall of 1988, creating a continuity of place on-site that provides for the young children of the school. A committee of parents provides administrative leadership. The program is funded and evaluated by the participating parents of the enrolled children. Leadership is a shared responsibility at Open Alternative School. The staff works collectively to make day-to-day decisions, with teachers having an equal voice. The Head Teacher provides liaison with the District and handles duties necessary to the successful running of the school.

Outline Abstract Abstract Background Discussion Conclusion ... Pre-publication history Background The diversification of medical school student and faculty bodies via race-conscious affirmative action policy is a societal and legal option for the U.S. Supreme Court has recently ruled its use constitutional. This paper investigates the implications of affirmative action, particularly race-conscious compared to race-blind admissions policy; explains how alternative programs are generally impractical; and provides a brief review of the history and legality of affirmative action in the United States. Discussion Selection based solely on academic qualifications such as GPA and MCAT scores does not achieve racial and ethnic diversity in medical school, nor does it adequately predict success as practicing physicians. However, race-conscious preference yields greater practice in underserved and often minority populations, furthers our biomedical research progression, augments health care for minority patients, and fosters an exceptional medical school environment where students are better able to serve an increasingly multicultural society.

Downtown Alternative Public School is a small, alternative, elementary public school in the downtown core. More than twenty years ago, DAS was created by a group of parents and teachers with a united teaching philosophy. They believed in the importance of parent involvement and conflict resolution as two key elements in education. A form of conflict resolution, called "Peacemaking" was developed, and is now used in schools all over the world. DAS is a very friendly place that invites parents to contribute to the school and the classroom in a variety of ways. Brant Street Daycare provides an on-site daycare that offers a seamless day for daycare children. About one-half of our children live in the neighbourhood surrounding the school, while the other half commutes from all over the city. The teachers at DAS are able to teach the Ontario Curriculum incorporating the DAS philosophy. We are also pleased to report that our students have consistently done very well in the standardized EQAO testing. It is our aim to create an exceptional environment that makes students excited about learning!
