ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES bradley@www.leeric.lsu.edu As a country we depend greatly on the use of oil and gas as sources of energy. ( View image: Production and Consumption of Oil ). Because it is a finite resource (and we are well aware of this in Louisiana), the use of alternative sources of energy must be explored. My class is extremely involved in environmental issues throughout the year. One of the units we do relates to alternative energy sources. The objective is for the students to determine what types of energy sources can be used in our location and under what conditions. During this time, the class builds water wheels designed to make something move and experiments with wind power as well as designing and building machines that work using solar power. As an introduction to the unit we brainstorm the various types of energy sources and discuss all the positive and negative effects of their use. Then, based on this list, the children determine the type of alternative energy source they believe would be best suited for use in our area. The choice is invariably solar power because of the heat in Louisiana. After this unit the children usually revise their choice because it becomes apparent to them that heat is not the necessary ingredient for solar power, it is the rays of the sun that we often do not get because of the cloud coverage. Summary Parabolic Solar Collectors collect the light rays of the sun. The light rays reflect off the sides equal to the angle they came in at (the angle of reflection). Because the shape of the collector is parabolic, the light rays come together at a point above the collector. This point is called the hot spot. The location of the hot spot varies based on the location of the sun, but it can be located by moving your hand around the perimeter and across the inside of the solar cooker until you find the hottest area and then raise your hand slowly until you reach the hot spot. This is usually quite hot.

Today, their biodegradable parts provide energy for heating, cooling, transportation and other necessities of modern-day life. But these "fossil fuels" aren't unlimited and don't come without harm to the environment.. Scientists have discovered that virtually every natural resource has the potential to be converted into a usable form of energy. Wind, for example, could supply the United States with nearly 40 percent of its electricity needs. Even pond scum and plastic are being tested for their fuel potential. Power from the sun and wind is renewable. And neither form of energy contributes significantly to global warming or air pollution. Even the minimal environmental degradation caused by renewable energy can be controlled. Organic matter such as plants provide "biomass energy" but emit levels of carbon dioxide equivalent to those released by the combustion of fossil fuels. By replacing, in equal measure, expended bioenergy resources with newly planted biomass, the net emission of greenhouse gases is zero. For this reason, "bioenergy feedstocks" are planted to balance emissions.

Dale's Solar Energy System A Home Powered by Alternative Energy in Ukiah, CA One of my major interests is alternative energy. I live in the woods far away from utility power lines, but I wouldn't hook up even if the utility company offered to bring power to my house for free. Instead I have the satisfaction of producing and maintaining my own energy system, based directly (solar) and indirectly (hydro) on the sun. I have lived with an alternative energy system for years and watched the quality rise and cost of system components drop slowly but surely. These days it is possible to create an efficient and low maintenance alternative energy systems that run the gamut from small-scale systems meeting basic lighting needs, to full-blown systems capable of matching the power requirements of any normal city home. And anywhere in between. It all depends on how much you can afford to spend. One of the nice things about alternative energy systems is you can start small and evolve your system component by component as your needs and finances allow. Some Background I bought property with several friends outside Ukiah in the early 70s as part of the "Back-to-the-Land movement. There was no PGE access, and for years we used kerosene lamps for lights. Forget a music system, we made our own music, and read novels to each other. It was great.
