Wallace Institute for Alternative Agriculture, Inc., is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, membership research and education organization established in 1983 to encourage and facilitate the adoption of low-cost, resource-conserving, environmentally sound, and economically viable farming systems. Throughout the evolution of the alternative agriculture movement, the Wallace Institute's fundamental goal has remained constant: to ensure that farm production gains not only are efficient and equitable, but also maintain the soil, water, and air on which farming and all human life depend.

Fax: 905-858-1589 ~ E-mail: ofac@idirect.com ALTERNATIVE AGRICULTURE IN ONTARIO When one thinks of livestock, it is usually cows, pigs, sheep or chickens that first come to mind.  However, taking a closer look at the alternative livestock industry in Ontario reveals a great deal of diversity.  Everything from elk to ratites to wild boar production can be found in this province, and the numbers are growing. The national wild boar industry was eight times larger in 1996 than it was in 1991.  In Ontario, there were 2,007 boars being farmed in 1996.  Wild boar is lean and nutritious, and the demand for this product is increasing.  In Canada, there are approximately 130,000 bison.  Bison are desirable animals to raise as they can graze on less land than cattle; they can live outdoors all year without shelter and are generally very hardy.  Bison meat sells for up to three times the price of beef, and about two-thirds of Canadian bison meat is exported to Europe.  In 1996, there were 2,300 bison raised on farms in Ontario.  Camelids (Llamas and Alpacas) can also be seen on farms, with 1,100 Llamas counted in 1996.  Currently, Llama breeding stock and wool are the two main reasons for the interest in raising these animals.  Other uses for llamas include predator control in sheep flocks, pets and even as pack animals and for pulling carts.  Mature llamas weigh an average of 280 – 350 kilograms and have a life span of 15 – 20 years.  The Alpaca is a smaller, heavier-fleeced relative of the Llama.  They weigh between 40 – 80 kilograms and stand 0.9 to 1.18 metres at the shoulders.  The Alpaca has been selectively bred for its quality of fibre and is a superior fibre producer compared the multipurpose Llama.  Their fleece is sheared once a year and come in variations of eight basic colours; from black to silver, caramel to fawn, and piebald (more than one colour on the blanket).  Alpacas were brought to Canada in 1985 from South America.

ALTERNATIVE AGRICULTURE This team is divided into three groups: Bruce Greenhouse, Rusk County Farmers Market, and Flambeau High School. The Bruce Greenhouse project is ongoing and has received $15,000 from local businesses to help build a $42,000 greenhouse. This group meets periodically, yet they are frustrated with learning how to find funding and write grants to finish their project. Therefore, the project is somewhat stalled until team members have more time to investigate possible grants. The Rusk County Farmers Market is also an ongoing project. The MIRA-funded sign can be clearly seen along Highway 8 in Ladysmith. Produce is sold Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Introduction
A truly sustainable agricultural system requires low amounts of off-farm inputs, but relatively large amounts of technology and management inputs. Hence, growers making the transition to more sustainable systems require the latest in research-based technical information. Several sources of information are available to those interested in Sustainable Agriculture techniques:
    Return to index
    Local County Cooperative Extension Offices
    - Local County Cooperative Extension (County Agent) offices have direct access to a host of sustainable agriculture specialists and researchers at the Land-grant universities. To find your local Extension office, look in the phone book under "County Government," "Cooperative Extension," or "University."

    USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service
    - USDA-NRCS ( Natural Resources Conservation Service ) field offices also have information on sustainable agriculture practices. Sustainable Agriculture includes soil conservation as an essential component, and is considered in all NCRS conservation plans.

Radionics In Agriculture by Steve Diver and George Kuepper
May 1997 This article (slightly revised from the original) does a fair job of describing the routine applications of radionics to farming. It was written as a Current Topics publication for the ATTRA (Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas) Project. ATTRA is a USDA funded project whose purpose is the dissemination of information on sustainable agriculture. Visit ATTRA's Website at http://www.ATTRA.org The use of radionic instruments for plant and animal diagnosis and treatment is gaining increased attention in alternative agriculture circles. While several commercial labs and consultants support this technology, little information is available through conventional channels like the Extension Service or land-grant colleges. Currently, radionics, and the related concepts of radiesthesia and homeopathy, are largely practitioner-based technologies. An exception is homeopathy, which receives some attention in mainstream medical journals. By contrast, all three are licensed, medical disciplines in the United Kingdom and several other European countries. The objective of this discussion is neither to persuade nor dissuade the reader regarding the validity of radionics. The purpose, rather, is to shed light on a poorly understood practice that is being adopted by a growing number of people within sustainable agriculture.

    New Alternative Agriculture Center
Subtitle G of Title XVI, Alternative Agricultural Research and Commercialization (AARC), is designed to help expedite industrial products from agricultural materials to the marketplace. It encompasses research, development, and other activities to advance new products or processes into the marketplace for non-feed, non-food, nontraditional forest or fiber products. Success would help diversify agricultural markets, foster rural economic development, provide environmentally friendly products, reduce imports, encourage private-public cooperation, and increase return on investment of taxpayer dollars. A new entity is to be created within USDA to administer the AARC subtitle. Regional Centers (no bricks and mortar) at host institutions will assist in implementing the programs on a regional basis after $5 million are appropriated. (At present only $4.5 million have been appropriated). The USDA has been soliciting recommendations for nine nominees to the Alternative Agricultural Research and Commercialization Board. The Board will be appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture (Edward Madigan) and is to be responsible for general supervision and policy control of AARC. For more information consult Mark Dungan, Office of the Secretary, room 200A, USDA, Washington DC 20250.
