Visit the LOU GEHRIG’S DISEASE page at http://gopher.chem.wayne.edu/~bio340/StudentPages/Mangus/Lou_Gherig.htm What is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also called ALS or "Lou Gehrig's disease" is a classic motor neuron disease. Motor neuron diseases are progressive chronic diseases of the nerves that come from the spinal cord responsible for supplying electrical stimulation to the muscles. This stimulation is necessary for the movement of body parts. ALS is progressive and fatal. The usual causes of death of patients with motor neuron diseases are not directly related to the disease, but result from simultaneous additional illnesses which ultimately occur because of weakness of the body. These illnesses are often infections. ALS occurs most often in adults in the fifth through seventh decades of life. It progressively leads to death in 2 to 7 years. The cause is unknown. What are the types of ALS? There are 3 types of ALS: classic sporadic, familial, and the Mariana Island forms. Classic ALS accounts for 90-95% of ALS patients in the U.S. This form is "sporadic" in that it cannot be traced to ancestors with the illness. The infrequent familial form is genetic, or inherited and tends to affect somewhat younger individuals average 47 years of age. The Mariana Island form is a rare form of ALS described in Chamorro indian patients from Guam.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, attacks the muscle-controlling nerve cells called motor neurons, causing the muscles connected to them to waste away. There is no cure, and many people with the disease succumb to respiratory failure within three to five years of diagnosis. A new study published on-line by Nature Genetics shows that genetic defects affecting a supply line within motor neurons can lead to an ALS-like disease.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a slowly progressive degeneration of nerve cells of the spinal cord, brain and brain stem, the bottom portion of the brain near the spinal cord. This degeneration affects only nerve cells that control muscle movements (motor neurons), resulting in the gradual loss of a person's ability to control his or her muscles. This disease does not affect mental abilities or nerves that control the senses. Although the cause of ALS remains unknown, current theories suggest that certain chemicals, including one that transmits signals between nerve cells, may play some role in the death of motor nerve cells. ALS generally strikes patients between the ages of 50 and 70, and affects men slightly more often than women. About 5 percent to 10 percent of cases appear to be inherited. Just Curious...
Posted: 05-07-04 5:04am Ok. I was wondering somethings...
If you dont know you're pregnant and you have medication to take in like say the first 7 weeks of your pregnancy, and dont find out until later that you actually are pregnant, how much will this affect the growing fetus? Im not pregnant but im curious to know about this. Back to top Quote Crystal Chanda Leir Experienced User Joined: 23 Feb 2004 Posts: 50 Location: Australia Posted: 05-07-04 10:48am Hi pips, i guess it realy depends on wht type of medication it is you need to take. Some things don't effect the fetus, and other things can be so severe it can cause you to either lose the baby or result in serious birth defects. Some anti depressants are ok, others are not advisable. Antibiotics are a touchy one aswell. You must talk to your doctor if you think you are pregnant and need to take medication. The doc is the only one who can advise you on what you can take. Good luck.
