  • only 10-20% of wild alligators survive to reach the length of four feet (due to cannibalism by large male alligators and other predators) landowners work to maintain the wetlands due in part to economic incentive some eggs are harvested from the wild every year by the landowners and sold to alligator farmers the alligators grow to four feet on farms in 12-18 months, but take 4-5 years to reach four feet in the wild the farmers are required to return 14% of their healthy, 4-foot (or greater) alligators to the wild each year in the 1960s there were less than 100,000 wild alligators in Louisiana; now there are around 2 million in the wild plus those on the farms the wild population is now supporting a controlled hunting season every alligator harvested must be tagged with a CITES (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species) tag. These tags are issued based on yearly population counts, and they record the section, range, township, and name of hunter, trapper, or farmer.

Crocodilians (order Crocodilia ) comprise two families: Alligatoridae and Crocodylidae . Caimans belong to the former. PROTECTED
The American Alligator Alligator mississippiensis , is found in freshwater throughout the state. It has a large (10-19') black body with a broad, rounded snout and lives an average of 40 years. The American Alligator is the official state reptile and the mascot of the University of Florida. It has excellent eyesight even at night. Its jaws hold 70-80 pointed teeth. If a tooth is lost, a new one grows in its place. It feeds on fish, turtles, water birds, snakes, frogs, and small mammals. The alligator swims by tucking its legs against its body and sweeping its tail from side to side. It is capable of sudden bursts of speed in the water and on land. Active during warmer months, alligators may stay secluded underwater or in shoreline dens during colder months. If resting, they can stay underwater for an hour or even several hours. They tend to wander during droughts and mating season. Scan the surface of a lake at night with a strong flashlight. A red glow is the light reflected from an alligator's eyes. A green or yellow glow indicates a frog or water spider.

Bald Eagle Nest There are more than 15 varieties of endangered wildlife at KSC. There are at least five active bald eagle nests around the Center. Nests can reach more than six feet in diameter and are usually inhabited from September through May. The eagles usually produce one or two chicks per year.

Protecting the alligator An estimated 10 million alligators were killed for their skins between 1870 and 1970, when hunting controls were initiated. The American alligator is now listed as a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act. Though the alligator has benefited from legal protection and is now abundant in many areas, habitat loss and changes in water management continue to threaten the alligator, as well as many other wildlife species in Florida.

Introduction I lived in south Florida from July 2000 until June 2003 after having lived mainly in Chicago. On 10 June 2003 I moved from Homestead Florida to Valdosta Georgia. I am fascinated by all the wildlife in the SE USA, so I have been taking lots of photos and putting them up on my website. Photos were taken with Pentax Spotmatic or Spotmatic II.
All the photos were taken by me.

Most of the 200,000 people who visit the refuge each year walk the 1.5-mile Wetland Walkway, where they can get close-up views of the birds and other marsh animals. The walkway has an observation tower, offering panoramic views of miles of the level marsh terrain. Both the walkway and the refuge visitor center are located on LA-27, the highway that passes through 10 miles of the eastern edge of the refuge. These two locations, where public use is concentrated, are designed to give visitors an understanding and appreciation for the entire 125,000 acres of protected marsh land. Fully accessible for wheelchairs, the Wetland Walkway is truly one of the finest in the refuge system. Wading birds, marsh birds, waterfowl, songbirds, swamp rabbits, muskrats, nutria, water snakes, and alligators can be closely observed in almost any season. The plentiful swamp rabbits, taking little notice of humans, are always entertaining and responsible for the consumption of untold amounts of print film and video tape.

In fact, the Gulf Coast Bird Club has already adopted Cameron Prairie NWR as one of its favorite birding sites and committed itself to compiling the refuge bird list. Click here to view a map of the refuge (30k). "I have walked almost the entire refuge, and I love it," says Winston Caillouet, a past officer of the club and frequent birder at Cameron Prairie NWR. Caillouet says the refuge is a great birding place because of the variety of habitats. He reports that the refuge bird list he is helping to compile has 199 species so far. Refuge Lands Were Formerly Rice Fields Consisting of 9,621 acres of fresh-water marsh and coastal prairie, the refuge was previously owned by companies that constructed levees and dikes for controlling water levels in their rice fields. When rice farming became uneconomical, they sold their properties for a refuge, which had in the meantime been identified as being crucial to meeting goals set by the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, an international agreement to restore lost wetland habitats.

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1937 to protect the vanishing wildlife of coastal Texas. It is an ever-changing land and is still being shaped by the waters and storms of the Gulf of Mexico. This 54,829 acre refuge occupies the Blackjack Peninsula, named for its scattered blackjack oaks. Grasslands, live oaks and red bay thickets cover deep, sandy soils. Ringed by tidal marches and broken by long, narrow ponds, Aransas is home for cranes, alligators, deer and many other species of wildlife. Why Are The Birds Here? Strong winds push the bay waters over low-lying shores, forming tidal marshes among the short, salt-tolerant vegetation. It is this habitat that attracts thousands of migratory birds. On their journey between North and Central America, warblers concentrate on the refuge from mid April to early May. Mild winters, by waters and abundant food supplies attract over 389 bird species to Aransas, including pelicans, egrets, spoonbills, ducks and geese. The winter home of the endangered whooping crane is in these same saltwater marches.
