According to a report published by the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology Committee on Adverse Reactions to Food (part of the National Institutes of Health), the allergies of up to one third of children tested cleared after milk was removed from their diet.
Dr. Benjamin Spock, author of the world-famous book Baby and Child Care , wrote in 1998, "Cow’s milk is not recommended for a child when he is sick—or when he is well, for that matter. Dairy products may cause more mucus complications and cause more discomfort with upper respiratory infections."
In their book Allergies to Milk , Drs. Sami L. Bahna and Douglas C. Heiner report that children who are allergic to milk "may have breathing difficulty, particularly during sleep, or an irritating cough associated with a postnasal drip. … The cough is frequently associated with noisy breathing and excessive mucus in the throat, and sometimes parents worry that their child is ‘gagging.’ … Such affected children are frequently diagnosed as having upper respiratory infection, viral illness, bronchitis, … or pneumonia. Accordingly, they may be given unnecessary medications, including cough syrups, decongestants, or antibiotics. Relief, however, is not satisfactory until cow’s milk is eliminated from the diet."

Introduction
Allergies are one of the most common causes of skin conditions. Allergies are encountered in pets, especially dogs, as often as we see them in humanoids. The main difference between us and pets is that allergies in pets tend to cause skin conditions. Allergies can be hard to control and are chronic in nature. This causes significant frustration for pet owners and discomfort for pets. A correct diagnosis along with proper therapy instituted early in the course of the disease will minimize this frustration. This page summarizes and generalizes the complex problem know as allergic skin disease. It is detailed, and will take a few minutes of your undivided attention to help in understanding this problem.
Pathophysiology of Allergies
When the immune system encounters an allergen that has the potential to cause disease (ex. parvo virus) it produces antibodies called IgG (immunoglobulin G, previously known as gammaglobulin) and IgM (immunoglobulin M). For the first 7-14 days of infection the virus spreads throughout the body because not enough antibodies are produced to stop them. Within 7-14 days enough antibodies are made to neutralize the virus, and the dog eventually recovers from the disease, all other things being equal. As time goes on the now sensitized immune system is ready to produce large amounts of antibodies rapidly the next time it encounters this virus. The rapid antibody response neutralizes the virus immediately, instead of taking the 7-14 days that occurs the first time it encountered the virus. This is called the anamnestic response, and is why a dog that recovers from parvo virus does not get the disease again.

I've contacted the manufacturer to get information about how dangerous it might be for people with milk allergy. In the meantime, be aware that it may show up in toothpastes, mouthwashes, foods, and any other places where a low-calorie sweetener would be used.)

JOHN A. ANDERSON, M.D.
Henry Ford Health System Detroit, Michigan
In the United States, the foods most commonly responsible for allergic reactions in children are milk, eggs and peanuts. About 20 percent of the population worldwide can be considered allergic, or atopic, meaning that such persons have a familial tendency to react in an allergic fashion when exposed to common proteins. A child whose parents or close relatives have allergies is not born with allergies but has a tendency to become allergic to specific proteins on repeated exposure. Foods are among the first new proteins in a child's experience and thus can cause allergic reactions. A greater proportion of infants are allergic to foods than are older children or adults. In time, allergic children tend to become sensitized to agents in the home, such as house dust mites, animals or cockroaches, because of constant exposure. Only later do these children react to seasonal aeroallergens such as tree, grass or weed pollens, or outdoor mold spores. Recent consumer surveys have shown that the American public believes food allergies are common.

Come close, little ones, and hear our bedtime tale . . . Once upon a time, there was a woman. In the fall, she loved to go outside and feel the wind. In the winter, she loved to go outside and play in the snow. And in the spring, she would go outside, but her throat would itch, her eyes would get puffy, her nose would run, her sinuses would clog, and she'd get nasal drip. So she locked herself up in her house, and never came out again. The moral of the story: hay fever bites. Living with hay fever can be extremely difficult - when you're having trouble doing something as simple as breathing , you know that you're in for a long spring and summer. Yet most of us don't live anywhere near a farm . . . so where does the hay fever come from? It has often been noted (by people who like to note things) that hay fever is not a fever at all, nor does it have anything to do with hay. Hay fever, a.k.a. rose fever, is medically designated as "

    DOG and CAT ALLERGIES
    by David the Dogman
    David Klein FDTCB. F.inst D.
Canine Behaviourist There is no breed of dog not even a Poodle or Chihuahua that will not trigger sneezes, rashes or asthmatic reactions. Allergic reactions can vary from dog to dog or cat to cat according to Jonathan Corren Clinical Professor of medicine and Director of the Allergy Research Foundation at the University of California. It is the Dander and top skin and certain proteins in saliva and urine that cause people allergic problems according to Emily Rothstein a resident in dermatology at Cornhill College of Veterinary Medicine. Any dog or cat that urinates or licks has the potential to be an allergic-type breed. Most research on pet allergies has centered on allergies to cats, maybe this is no surprise because they are twice as likely to make their owners sneeze as dogs. Longer haired cats tend to shed less allergen and consequently owners with allergies have fewer reactions. Cats that are short haired traditionally give off more allergen, it is not known if this is true for dogs.
    HOW TO BEAT PET ALLERGIES
Research has shown that if a cat or dog is washed about once a week the airborne allergens are cut drastically. It is recommended that dogs should be kept outdoors at night. Dogs and cats that live indoors should not spend any time in the allergic person's bedroom and never allowed on beds.

ALLERGY TESTING
How Are Allergies Diagnosed?
First, your doctor will ask you questions about your health and symptoms. Make sure to tell your doctor if anyone in your family has allergies. If family members have allergies, your chances of having allergies increase. Your doctor uses the following information to make a diagnosis of allergy:
  • Physical exam
History of your symptoms and family history
    Allergy tests (not always needed)
Allergy tests can be done to help identify if you are allergic and what you are allergic to. Once allergies are identified specific avoidance and treatment measures can be recommended. There are several types of allergy testing.
What Types of Allergy Testing can be done?
Prick Skin Testing
A reliable test for allergies is the prick skin test. A small amount of each thing you may be allergic to (allergen) is placed on the skin, often the back. The skin is then pricked. If you are allergic to an allergen, you will get a bump and redness where the skin is pricked. After a short time, each skin test reaction is measured for swelling and redness. If there is a large enough skin reaction, it means that you may be allergic to the allergen placed at that site. The information from your prick skin test results and your history of symptoms will help your doctor to determine if you have an allergy. Antihistamines can affect the skin test results. Your doctor may tell you to stop these medications for days to weeks before the testing is done. Other medicines can also affect the results and may need to be avoided. Ask your health care provider what medicines to avoid before your prick skin tests are done.
