Penicillin allergy
by Gillian M. Shepherd, M.D., FAAAAI Penicillin is a member of a large family of antibiotics. "Relatives" of penicillin include ampicillin and amoxicillin . Another large family of antibiotics called cephalosporins (sef-a-lo-spore-ins) are more distantly related to penicillin. A part of the core chemical structure is the same in penicillins and cephalosporins. Members of the cephalosporin family include cefaclor (Ceclor), cefalexin (Keflex) and cefuroxime (Ceftin). Many with history of allergy
Although many new antibiotics have become available over the last several years, allergy to penicillin is still a significant problem for some patients. If you have a history of allergy to penicillin, some physicians may advise you to avoid all penicillins and cephalosporins. This obviously limits the number of antibiotics that you can take when you have a bacterial infection. Today, however, this is rarely necessary, as effective testing is available to determine if you are allergic to penicillin. A history of allergy to penicillin is very common, reported in at least 10% of patients in hospitals. Patients may have a history of a reaction ranging from life-threatening to a rash (which also may have been due to a coincidental viral infection); or they may have been told never to take penicillin if a relative had a past reaction. Regardless of the severity of the past history, however, the majority of patients lose penicillin allergy over time.
