Achoo! Every time you go near your best friend's cat, your eyes start to water and you start sneezing up a storm. And every spring and fall, your dad gets a runny nose when he takes you for hikes in the woods. What's going on? Well, you and your dad may have allergies. Read on to find out more.
Chain Reaction
An allergy (say: ah -lur-jee) is your body's immune reaction to certain plants, animals, foods, insect bites , or other things. These are called allergens (say: ah -lur-jenz). When your immune system reacts to one of these allergens, to the point that you get symptoms, you are allergic to it. Allergies are caused by your body's immune (say: ih- myoon ) system. Your immune system protects you from diseases by fighting germs like bacteria and viruses, but when you have allergies, it overreacts and tries to "fight" ordinary things like grass pollen or certain foods when you come into contact with them. This causes the sneezing, itching, and other reactions that you get with allergies.

Multiple Sinus Surgeries With No Relief

Allergies forum post by ihatehumidity:

I am interested to know if anyone has had a sinus surgery that has actually helped. I have had five surgeries and now they tell me that they need to go in to remove the scar tissue from all of the surgeries. My advise is to NEVER have sinus surgery. Can anyone relate?

Citation information One in five people have them. The term allergy was first used in 1906 referring to any unusual reaction, either helpful or harmful, within the immune system. The IgE antibody was discovered sixty years later and its role in allergies was too. Now scientists have found symptoms and ways of combating allergies. Allergies form by being exposed to an allergen (example: ragweed), where the body sensitizes mast cells, cells that release histamine. "The allergen is then re-exposed and the symptoms of allergies start. The IgE antibody is the main component in allergies. Antibodies are protein molecules that circulate through the body neutralizing and eliminating nasty substances. The IgE antibody has proved to be effective against invading parasites. The trouble is that the U.S. hasn't many parasites and since it's under utilized it aims it's power to the wrong offenders, i.e. ragweed" (Coping). There are different types of allergens. See below.
