Algerian president fires PM
Benflis had been prime minister since August 2000 Story Tools ALGIERS, Algeria Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika fired Prime Minister Ali Benflis on Monday as part of a Cabinet shake-up in the North African country. APS, Algeria's official news agency, quoted Benflis as saying he was not consulted before the decision. "I would like to clarify this for the Algerian public: At no moment did I resign," Benflis said after a meeting with the president, according to APS. Bouteflika has named Ahmed Ouyahia the previous prime minister and a close ally of the president as Benflis' replacement, The Associated Press reported. Details of other Cabinet changes were not immediately available. Benflis, 58, has been prime minister since August 2000. He had been considered a potential challenger to Bouteflika in presidential elections in April 2004. Benflis is the leader of Algeria's largest political party, the National Liberation Front (FLN). The FLN more than tripled its number of seats in the 389-seat parliament, moving from 64 to 199 seats, in elections last year.

Prosecutors blame Algerian in failed bomb plot
Ressam was arrested in Port Angeles, Washington, for allegedly trying to cross into the U.S. from Canada with a car full of bomb-making materials. From CNN Correspondent Frank Buckley LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) Prosecutors Tuesday said an Algerian national planned to bomb New Year's 2000 celebrations in the United States, but authorities foiled the plot in a "law enforcement success story." Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Gonzalez outlined the government's case in opening statements against Ahmed Ressam, 33, who authorities say has ties to Osama bin Laden's terrorist network. Ressam has pleaded not guilty to terrorism, possession of explosives and other felony charges. He faces more than 100 years in prison if convicted on all charges. Two die in Algerian market bomb
ALGIERS, Algeria Two people were killed and 18 wounded when two bombs ripped through a packed Algerian market, a hospital official said. The home-made bombs exploded on Friday at Guessab outdoor market in the small town of Ouled Yaich in Blida province, about 50 km (30 miles) south of the capital Algiers. "The final toll is two dead and 18 hurt, three of them seriously wounded," a hospital official told Reuters. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. "The bombs, which were planted on the market ground, went off minutes apart at the time of peak shopping," the official APS news agency reported, quoting a government security source. The government has blamed Islamic rebels for similar attacks in the past eight years in public places such as markets and schools in which hundreds of civilians have been killed. The bombings could be part of an Islamic rebel campaign to create a climate of insecurity ahead of parliamentary elections on May 30, a source close to security forces told Reuters.

When the music spread around Algeria in the 1960's it was very much because of its danceability. An important aid to the distribution were music cassettes. The style was a catchy mixture of medieval melody lines and Western rhythms. There was also a mixture of both traditional and modern instruments. And the lyrics covered the whole range of subjects from religion to politics.

France and Algeria: A History of Decolonization and Transformation
by Phillip C. Naylor
Gainesville: University of Florida Press, 2000. 457 pp. $49.95
Middle East Quarterly
June 2001
Reviewed by Daniel Pipes It is difficult for those outside of the two countries directly involved to plumb the depths of the French-Algerian relationship. It goes back only to 1830 but it feels like forever; that was the year when, as a result of the dey's fly-swatter hitting the French diplomat's face, Paris launched a devastating conquest of his country that lasted fifteen years. The colonial embrace was perhaps the tightest to be found anywhere on earth, made all the more remarkable by the fact that Algeria was not a simple place ready to be reshaped, but a mature Muslim society. Nonetheless, reshaped it was, although this was attempted to be undone by the Algerian revolution of 1954-62 and the abrupt departure of the French in 1962.
Naylor, a talented historian at Marquette University, notes that the literature on these two countries makes it seem like their relationship ended in 1962. But not for him: his account starts then and traverses the next near-four decades, surveying the still-suffocatingly close post-colonial era. It seems that no matter how hard the two peoples try to disengage or normalize their relations, they are fated to be in each other's hair. In part, their connection is practical: Algeria provides oil and gas on the one hand, workers on the other; in turn, France provides aid, a market, an employer, and other sources of support. But the more interesting connection, the deeper one, is that concerning identity: to an amazing extent, the French sense of self remains defined by Algeria, to the point that the "second Algerian revolution" of 1988 caused a profound crisis of self in France too.
