The earliest known inhabitants of the region that is now Algeria were Berber-speaking nomads who were settled there by the 2d millennium B.C. As Numidia, it became (9th cent. B.C.) a province of Carthage and then (106 B.C.) of Rome; during the Christian era, St. Augustine (354–430) was bishop at Hippo (now Annaba). With Rome's decline in the 5th cent. A.D., Algeria was conquered by the Vandals (430–31), the Byzantine Empire (6th cent.), and finally, in the late 7th and early 8th cent., by the Arabs, whose introduction of Islam profoundly altered the character of the area. Spain captured the coastal cities in the 15th cent. but was expelled (mid-16th cent.) with the help of the Ottoman Turks, who assumed control. During this period the Algerian coast was a stronghold of pirates and a center of the slave trade. France invaded Algeria in 1830 and declared it a colony in 1848. Europeans began to arrive in large numbers, dominating the government and the economy, and leaving the native Muslim population with scant political or economic power.
A nationalist movement began to develop after World War I, and a war for independence, led by the National Liberation Front (FLN), broke out in 1954. After more than seven years of bitter fighting, in which at least 100,000 Muslim and 10,000 French soldiers were killed, Algeria became independent on July 3, 1962.

Country Info Algeria Introduction Algeria General Data Algeria Maps Algeria Culture ... Algeria Time and Date Algeria History Back to Top Modern Day ALGERIA is a leading member state of the Arab Maghrib, the term applied to the western part of Arab North Africa. Algeria is inhabited predominantly by Muslim Arabs but it has a large Berber minority. The most significant forces in the country's history have been the spread of Islam, arabization, colonization, and the struggle for independence. North Africa served as a transit region for peoples moving toward Europe or the Middle East. Thus, the region's inhabitants have been influenced by populations from other areas. Out of this mix developed the Berber people, whose language and culture, although pushed from coastal areas by conquering and colonizing Carthaginians, Romans, and Byzantines, dominated most of the land until the spread of Islam and the coming of the Arabs. The introduction of Islam and Arabic had a profound impact on North Africa (or the Maghribsee Glossary) beginning in the seventh century. The new religion and language introduced changes in social and economic relations, established links with a rich culture, and provided a powerful idiom of political discourse and organization. From the great Berber dynasties of the Almoravids and Almohads to the militants seeking an Islamic state in the early 1990s, the call to return to true Islamic values and practices has had social resonance and political power. For 300 years, beginning in the early sixteenth century, Algeria was a province of the Ottoman Empire under a regency that had Algiers as its capital. During this period, the modern Algerian state began to emerge as a distinct territory between Tunisia and Morocco.

    Sexual relationships in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is about more than Buddhist monks, tropical fruit, and white-sand beaches. It is also about the most beautiful women in the world, and excellent prospects for Western men to enter into meaningful sexual relationships. And I have to stress: I do not mean frequenting prostitutes. Of course, the wide range options for meaningful sexual relationships that exists in Southeast Asia is not obvious to the tourist or occasional business visitor. Like most of the Western men who live permanently in Southeast Asia, I myself have moved to this part of the world in search of paradise… not on palm-fringed beaches, but in the embrace of young beautiful women (and no, not the same one for years on end). I have now set up a new website, www.AsiaLove.org

    Modern History Sourcebook:
    Charles de Gaulle, French Premier:
Speech at Constantine, Algeria, October 3, 1958
Last Sunday, three and a half million men and women of Algeria, without distinction of community, in complete equality, gave France and myself their vote of confidence. They did this quite simply without any constraint and in spite of the threats that certain fanatics brought to bear against them, their families and their property. This is a fact, as clear as the bright light of clay. And this fact is fundamental not only because it mutually and forever pledges, one to the other, Algeria and France, but also because it ties in with what happened that same day in Metropolitan France, in the Overseas Departments, in the Territories of the Community. The least that can be said of this great demonstration is that the French people proved to themselves and to the entire world their determination for renovation, and that, at the same time, a hundred million men decided to build their future together in Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. With regard to Algeria, what is the future to which France is calling her? Women and men of Algeria, I have come here to tell you what it is.

RELATED STORIES, SITES ALGIERS, Algeria (CNN) Polls opened Thursday morning for Algeria's presidential election, even though the choice was limited to one man pro-army candidate Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Six of seven presidential candidates abruptly withdrew from the race Wednesday, protesting alleged ballot-rigging. Thursday's election was to choose Algeria's first civilian president. The former French colony has been rocked by insurgent violence since 1992, when authorities scrapped an election the now-outlawed Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) was poised to win. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict Bouteflika, a former foreign minister, said he would accept victory only if he receives support from a significant number of voters.
