Man found guilty in millennium bomb plot against LAX
Haouari By Phil Hirschkorn CNN Producer NEW YORK (CNN) A federal jury Friday found Mokhtar Haouari guilty of supporting a plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport around New Year's 2000. Haouari, 32, an Algerian-born Montreal shopkeeper, was found guilty of conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist act for helping fellow Algerian national Ahmed Ressam, 34, in a plan to detonate a suitcase bomb at the Los Angeles airport. But Haouari was acquitted of a second terrorism charge of aiding and abetting a terrorist act. Jurors said the government failed to prove that Haouari knew what Ressam was planning to do in the United States. "There was no evidence that he knew Ressam was going to be a bomber," one juror said. Algeria
    History
    To the Early Nineteenth Century
The earliest recorded inhabitants of Algeria were Berber-speaking peoples who by the 2d millennium B.C. were living in small village-based political units. In the 9th cent. B.C. Carthage was founded in modern-day Tunisia, and Carthaginians eventually established trading posts at Annaba, Skikda, and Algiers. Coastal Algeria was known as Numidia and was usually divided into two kingdoms, both of which were strongly influenced by Carthage. The kingdoms of Numidia were united by King Masinissa B.C. In 146 B.C. , Rome destroyed Carthage, and by 106 B.C. , after defeating King Jugurtha of Numidia, it held coastal Algeria. The Romans also gained control of the Tell Atlas region and part of the Plateau of the Chotts; the rest of present-day Algeria remained under Berber rulers and was outside Roman rule. Under Rome, the cities were built up and impressive public works (including roads and aqueducts) were constructed. Much grain was shipped from Algeria to Rome. By the Christian era, Algeria (divided into Numidia and Mauritania Caesariensis) was an integral, albeit relatively unimportant, part of the Roman Empire. One of its most famous citizens was St. Augustine Donatism (which was in part a Berber protest against Roman rule).

The worst in Algeria is that TORTURE was accepted by the majority of Algerian people as a normal police or army procedure.
No Questions. No Answers. No Talks. No Writings

Geography

Algeria is the second largest country in Africa. In the north the mountain range - the Saharan Tell - is roughly parallel with the Mediterranean coast and is disrupted by valleys and plateaux. To the south of the Saharan Tell is the Saharan Atlas range which roughly defines the divide between arable land to the north and the southern desert. The many important Roman ruins in Algeria are in excellent condition due to the dryness of the desert. TOP
History
In 1830 Algeria became a French colony. 1962 Algeria achieved independence from France after eight years of guerrilla warfare in which one million Algerians died. A brief power struggle followed between moderates and militants ended when Colonel Boumedienne lead the Arme de Liberation to victory. Ben Bella was elected prime minister promising a "revolutionary Arab-Islamic state based on the principles of socialism and collective leadership within Algeria and anti-imperialism abroad. These ideals were quickly put in to practice by landless peasants as they moved onto the land vacated by the French and established cooperative farms to be administered by peasant councils. Nationalisation of major industries proceeded. However the redistribution of land was limited to that which had been French owned, resulting in large estates still owned by rich Algerians. The call for liberation of women particularly frightened these conservative landowners.

97. Vegetarian Recipes Around The World - Algerian Couscous
Recipe for a vegan dish with garbanzo beans, from the International Vegetarian Union.
http://www.ivu.org/recipes/african/algerian-j.html
International Vegetarian Union (IVU) Algerian Couscous
From: Michelle Olivier - molivier@u.washington.edu
Anyway, I thought I would share my favorite recipe with you.
(The original had a bit of olive oil but I just substituted vegetable stock.)
My husband learned how to make this in France from some Algerian friends.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
  • 1 large onion, chopped 1/2 t. turmeric 1/4 t. cayenne 1/2 c. vegetable stock 1 1/2 t. black pepper 1/2 t. salt 1 small can tomato paste 3-4 whole cloves 3 medium zucchini 4 small yellow squash or yellow zucchini 3/4 large carrots 4 medium yellow or red potatoes, skins on 1 red or green bell pepper 1 15-oz. can garbanzo beans
1. Saute onion in vegetable stock over med. low heat until translucent. 2. Add all spices and cook for a few more minutes, stirring as needed. 3. Add tomato paste, stir and simmer 2 minutes. 4. Cut the vegetables in large chunks and add all (not the beans) and a dash of cinnamon; add water to cover.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for an hour or so.
(This can cook slowly for 2-3 hours, if desired.)
