BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... Algeria Algeria is an ancient country with a history that extends back several thousand years to the time of the Phoenicians. The Romans, followed by the Germanic Vandal tribes and the Byzantines all ruled the area. When Islam grew mighty in the 8th century A.D., the Berbers of Algeria were converted to that religion and a unique civilization flourished. Some eight centuries later, Spain conquered Algiers and other cities but was driven out by Barbarossa who brought Algeria into the Turkish Ottoman Empire. From this point, piracy became an important money-making tool for the country, so much so that by 1800, the US, England, and France joined in an effort to combat piracy in the Mediterranean. Ottoman rule over the country was brought to an end by the French in 1830. In 1848, following an Islamic rebellion, France made Algeria a legal part of France. In the mid-1950s, a guerilla effort arose to oust the French led by the FLN (Front de Liberation Nationale) and in 1962, independence was declared. Immediately, about a million colonists left Algeria for France. Times have been turbulent for Algeria since independence, including close relations with the Soviet Union and a struggle between fundamentalist Islamists and the military. Since 1992, over 40,000 people have died due to civil unrest and assassinations. In 1999, elections were held; only one candidate remained in the race: Abdelazziz Bouteflika. His government reached agreement with the Islamic rebels in September 1999.

History of Algerian Independence
French Colonization: Under french domination, Algerians could not hold public meetings nor even leave their homes without permission. French state racism kept Algerians at the bottom of society, working as servants, unskilled labourers and peasants, while only French citizens or other whites were allowed skilled jobs and positions in the social institutions (from the police to the government). Friends of the Manifesto and Liberty . In 1947, in the wake of the second world war and fearful of nationalistic uprisings, the government established a parliamentary assembly in Algeria, made up of half European and Algerian delegates, with the purpose of upholding French colonial rule. It did not last. In March of 1954, Ahmed Ben Bella , an ex-sergeant in the French army who was deported to Egypt for his leftist political beliefs, joined eight other Algerian exiles to form what would become the National Liberation Front (FLN) Proclamation. To the Algerian people November 1, 1954 The FLN was waging a guerrilla war 400,000 soldiers

The day that Assia Djebar's father, a teacher in the French colonial educational system, first escorted his daughter to school, he set her on a bilingual and bicultural journey that resulted in her development as an artist and an intellectual. Djebar recalls the scene in L'amour, la fantasia to express his uneasy alliance with the French language and culture. Yet Djebar's experience, in contrast to theirs, is distinctly gendered. She came to believe that the process of Western acculturation, resulting in her mastery of the colonizer's language and access to public space, excluded her from most, if not all, aspects of traditional woman's world. Early Algerian History The earliest known inhabitants of certain areas of Algeria were cattleherds and hunters living in the Al Hajjar region between 8,000 and 2,000BC. These may have been tribal Berbers. Phoenicians settled some of the coastal areas of Algeria from their north-African state of Carthage which was in modern day Tunisia. The first Algerian kingdom was established by the Berber chieftain Massinissa during the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage which took place between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. Massinissa reigned over his kingdom of Numidia from 202-148BC and his dynasty lasted until 106BC when his grandson Jugurtha became a Roman client. As part of the Roman Empire Numidia flourished, becoming known as the ' granary of Rome'. A road system and a series of Roman garrisons which became small Roman cities were built during the Roman period. ( more from arab.net)

Resources History Books UK Powells: History Best Sellers Posters Algeria Posters The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon, Constance Farrington (Translator) Frantz Fanon (1925-61) was a Martinique-born black psychiatrist and anticolonialist intellectual; The Wretched of the Earth is considered by many to be one of the canonical books on the worldwide black liberation struggles of the 1960s. Within a Marxist framework, using a cutting and nonsentimental writing style, Fanon draws upon his horrific experiences working in Algeria during its war of independence against France. He addresses the role of violence in decolonization and the challenges of political organization and the class collisions and questions of cultural hegemony in the creation and maintenance of a new country's national consciousness. As Fanon eloquently writes, "[T]he unpreparedness of the educated classes, the lack of practical links between them and the mass of the people, their laziness, and, let it be said, their cowardice at the decisive moment of the struggle will give rise to tragic mishaps." Although socialism has seemingly collapsed in the years since Fanon's work was first published, there is much in his look into the political, racial, and social psyche of the ever-emerging Third World that still rings true at the cusp of a new century.

L'amour, la fantasia
On the occasion of the publication of L'amour, la fantasia (1985), the first translation in Slovene of a novel by Assia Djebar, the publishing house Mladinska knjiga and City of Women present the work of the Algerian author, film-director and academic. Besides a presentation of the book we will screen her film La Nouba, des femmes du Mont Chenoua (1978) at Slovenska kinoteka.
Assia Djebar
The film La Nouba, des femmes du Mont Chenoua (winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice Film Festival, 1978) takes its title and structure from the "Nouba", a traditional song of five movements. The film mingles narrative and documentary styles to document the creation of women's personal and cultural histories. Returning to her native region 15 years after the end of the Algerian war, Lila is obsessed by memories of the war for independence that defined her childhood. In dialogue with other Algerian women, she reflects on the differences between her life and theirs. In lyrical footage she contemplates the power of grandmothers who pass down traditions of anti-colonial resistance to their heirs. Reading the history of her country as written in the stories of women's lives, Assia Djebar's La Nouba des Femmes du Mont-Chenoua is an engrossing portrait of speech and silence, memory and creation, and a tradition where the past and present coexist.
