I am almost embarrassed to say that my fondest memory of high school algebra is the test I once got back with a 25/100 at the top. Luckily the teacher had reversed the numbers and the grade actually was a 75. Either way a math student like me could have used a bit of the kind of help offered by the DVD series algebra'scool from BestQuest. Imagine for a moment that some of the characters of Nickelodeon, Sesame Street, and other television series favorites have grown up a bit, are all now in high school, and have discovered the best way to learn something is to teach it to others. Form a mental image of the implications of that composite and you'll at least have an inkling of the upbeat pace, sense of humor, relevant wisdom, and graphic quality of the group of characters - Mr. Frogan and his diverse students - that bring algebra'scool to life. The characters aren't puppets nor are they cartoons (take a gander at the included screen shots to see what they look like), but the cast of

    CTI Mathematics Workshop 07
Symbolic Algebra Packages and the Teaching of Applied Mathematics
Report of a workshop held on Thursday 10 January 1991 at the University of Birmingham This was the eighth of a regular programme of workshops looking at ways in which mathematical software and courseware can be used in a teaching context. 1. Mathematica in the teaching of Mathematics - Dr Allan Hayes, University of Leicester and Wolfram Research (UK) Ltd Currently the system Mathematica consists of two parts - the core, where computations are carried out, and the front end, or user interface. A third communication part is to be added, which will link with different front ends, and other packages such as the NAG library. A user has complete control over the layout of the package on the screen, and a teacher can prepare 'notebooks' in advance to help students to use the package. These notebooks contain prepared instructions in nested 'cells' which can be worked through by students. The student sees a script on screen, with marks on the right hand side to show how cells are nested. Clicking on these marks will expand the cell of interest, showing subcells which can themselves be expanded. Using this method, students can learn to take advantage of the power of the package within one lecture. Dr Hayes showed as an example a second year exercise on finding constrained extrema. The teacher can illustrate objects such as the intersection of two subspaces for discussion, and help students to examine the underlying mathematics involved in processes such as the normalisation of a matrix, which could not be envisaged without a computer.

The partners propose to pilot a model for a professional development system that brings together three groups: algebra teachers in grades 8-10, university mathematics majors, and mathematics graduate students who are teaching remedial courses at the university level. Each cohort will take part in a two-year program. During the NSF MSP grant period, there will be two cohorts. 1. REAL Objectives
