How to teach algebra to kids. Lesson 2: The distributive law
Here's the idea. Suppose I have 3 bags of fruits and each bag has 2 tangerines and 4 mangos. How many fruits do I have in total? Well, there's two ways to find this out. I could say: There are 3 bags and each bag has 6 fruits so I have 3 times 6 equals 18 fruits all together. Or I could say: There are 3 bags and each bag has 2 tangerines so I have 3 times 2 equals 6 tangerines all together. Similarly, there are 3 bags and each bag has 4 mangos so I have 3 times 4 equals 12 mangos all together. As a mathematical equation, we have just said: bags fruits in each bag fruits, bags tangerines in each bag tangerines, and bags mangos in each bag mangos. So This is the distributive law. One can say this as; bags or number of bags number of bags number of tangerines number of bags number of mangos
or even

Articles Press Releases March 26, 2003 LessonLab Releases Algebra Teaching Course Based on TIMSS Video Study Research, Course Aims to Help Improve U.S. Students Algebra Performance SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 26, 2003 - Professional development and education research company, LessonLab, today announces a new online professional development course for teachers based on the landmark TIMSS Video Study (part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study) released today by the US Department of Education. Conducted over four years, the TIMSS Video Study examined eighth-grade classroom mathematics and science teaching by videotaping and analyzing teaching practices in more than one thousand classrooms spanning seven countries. In conjunction with the International Association of the Evaluation of Education Achievement (IEA), the study is being conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. Department of Education under a contract with LessonLab, Inc. of Santa Monica, California. The course - Explorations of Algebra Teaching - is based in part on the findings of this study and is being underwritten with the support of the Intel Foundation. The TIMSS Video Study Co-Director, Dr. James Stigler, is also president and CEO of LessonLab, a company that has developed a new professional development platform on which the new algebra course is based. LessonLab's professional development platform supports study of videotapes of actual classroom lessons over the Internet, and also provides access to text transcriptions and other related documents. Teachers use the platform to collaborate with colleagues to learn more about the content they teach, the way students learn in classrooms, and to increase their knowledge of effective instructional strategies.

    Description
Mathematica projects can improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts and enrich their mathematical experience. At the same time, such projects can serve to teach Mathematica fundamentals. This presentation examines three projects from sophomore courses in linear algebra: 1) visualizing linear and affine transformations of the plane, 2) least-squares approximation as an application of orthogonal projection, and 3) cracking Hill ciphers. The viewpoints of both student and teacher are considered. For each project the student does some Mathematica programming; for each, the teacher prepares

Teachers Get Help in Overcoming Common Barriers to Teaching Algebra For the Class of 2007, No Algebra = No Graduation in Indiana
(Princeton, N.J., Feb. 4, 2004) Educational Testing Service (ETS) developed the Algebra Evidence-Centered Teaching and Assessment workshop series customized to Indiana’s algebra standards. ETS and the Indiana Department of Education state joined forces to host a series of these workshops in the state, in which experienced master teachers learn how to teach their colleagues more effective ways of teaching algebra. In the training, master teachers receive a "playbook" of tips for teaching a range of basic and more difficult algebra concepts, and diagnostic tools to help them regularly assess student progress. "Regularly monitoring student performance in algebra helps teachers catch problems earlier and adjust instruction to meet the unique needs of each student before it’s too late," says ETS trainer and teacher-in-residence Liz Marquez. "One test at the end of the year doesn’t tell teachers whether their students truly understand the ideas underlying the mathematical problems they solve."

Learning about Algebra tiles: Activities for teachers
Algebra tiles provide a useful way to introduce operations on polynomials to students of all ages. The following can be used both as a self guided tour of teaching with algebra tiles, and as a set of activities for use with students. Examples of instructions to students are indented. The remainder of the text is addressed directly to the reader who is assumed to be a teacher.
    Getting Started
attached sheets . The commercial sets are nice and sturdy, but tempt students to negative numbers too quickly and cost too much to give away a set to every kid. The sheets are not as sturdy, but can be made available to kids to take home and delay the idea of negatives until the teacher is ready to cope with it. You may also have a commercial set with other colours for a second variable, and some more squarish rectangles. Hide them for the moment. The third sheet in the cutout set provided fulfills the same functions, so ignore it for the moment, too.
    Naming
I call the small squares "nameless ones." This captures two important ideas: They aren't named when we talk about polynomials, and their value is 1. The reason for the name isn't something you'd tell kids on the first day, but having reasonable names for things makes the going easier later on.
