Teaching Obedience, Not Algebra
by Crispin Sartwell August 2002 The reason my son, Vince, and I were in the school in the first place was that Vince had refused to take a test. He sat there quietly but simply refused to make any marks on the paper, although he thought the test was easy. You could put it like this: it had suddenly dawned on Vince that he was the one who was responsible for his own education. Stand up for what you believe? Teachers are required to teach the approved curricula like a little chorus of playback devices. Their success is measured by mechanical performance on standardized tests. No large institution values independent thought, and public schools actively despise and punish it; they demand and attempt to enforce and reward mindless obedience. That, and not algebra, is what they are designed to teach. That is their fundamental purpose, the real justification of their existence. What the public schools want from our children and for that matter from its own teachers is just what the Soviet Union wanted from its citizens: a continual enactment of the empty forms of obedience, continual self-betrayal. That number represents one thing: obedience to the institution.

This book is suitable for both bad and good students at mathematics. Firstly, each category is explained easily but briefly. Secondly, there are many questions, so you can get used to each category and can solve many questions quickly. For another thing, this book is so compact that you can bring anywhere you go and read it. Finally but the most importantly, this book is excellent for people using English as a mother tongue. Goals of Project T.E.A.C.H.
Project participants will become competent and confident users of the new TI-89 calculator (with computer algebra system) and StudyWorks software for algebra instruction. During the 1999-2000 school year they will study the effects this technology has on their existing algebra curriculum, instruction and assessment. As a tool approved for use on the SAT college entrance exam and the national AP Calculus test, it is anticipated that this calculator will become the tool of choice for college-bound students and that computer algebra systems will become a standard tool in all algebra classrooms. These participants will provide base-line information about the benefits and pitfalls of using CAS in algebra instruction and assessment, and will also develop new curriculum to support the effective use of this technology for algebra.

Teaching Algebra
Janine Kellett
Part 1: Introduction
The publication of the Cockroft report in 1982 put mathematics at the forefront of the curriculum. This was reinforced further by the implementation of the National Curriculum in 1993. This change has seen teachers spend not only a great deal of time in teaching mathematics, but also in the assessment of the mathematical skills of their pupils. As a result, teachers have found themselves struggling to juggle their time effectively whilst still meeting the needs of the National Curriculum. During the past year it has not been unusual to find reports in the newspapers based on the idea that `it could actually improve children's education if teachers spent more time teaching and less with paperwork. Quick to gain from this were the publishing houses. It could be suggested that, if anything, the National Curriculum may have stimulated a resurgence of the influence of the mathematics textbook. The additional demands of the National Curriculum means that schools are looking for ways of lifting their workload, and many are turning to textbooks, which are becoming increasingly more easy to use in both teaching and assessment terms. One such scheme is the top-selling key stage three mathematics textbook series Key Maths. Stanley Thornes' Key Maths has now established a dominant market position, designed to provide a full and balanced coverage of the knowledge, skills and applications required by the 1993 order. One school that has adopted the Key Maths Scheme is St. Antony's High School. For many years, the staff in the department produced their own worksheets - a task which proved to be both expensive and time-consuming. This view is echoed by Chris Woodhead, the Chief Inspector of Schools. In an article written for the Guardian comparing the educational success of Pacific Rim societies with our own, he is reported as noting that amongst many things "they utilise textbooks for children that ensure teachers do not have the huge task of generating their own curriculum materials daily"

Teach Yourself Algebra > Customer Review #1: Good general coverage

This book provides an excellent grounding in some of the fundamentals of algebra, although, as the book points out in the preface, it is not complete in its coverage of algebra and has little in the way of proofs. Also, it does not teach you as many of the techniques for solving word problems that you will encounter in algebra outside of the book as it probably should do. A whole chapter devoted to word problems would have been good. This book is firmly aimed at school students or those who have forgotten the principles of algebra, and in that it is an excellent book. However, since no coverage is given to more advanced topics such as matrix or linear algebra, a title along the lines of Teach Yourself Elementary Algebra would have been better.
