Computational Physics 2
The purpose of computing is insight, not numbers.
— Richard Hamming The broad categories of computational physics are simulation, visualisation and modelling. At a finer scale, computational physics embraces a wide range of areas including numerical methods, algorithms and data analysis. Simulation and modelling are usually taught by stressing numerical techniques — this course focuses on using symbolic or computer algebra — in particular, using Mathematica The objectives of this course are:
  • to use computers as an aid to understanding real physical systems; to learn efficient methods for the analysis of these systems.
  • Computational Experiments 1
This course is a "hands-on" laboratory style course consisting of 5 assignments worth a total of 60%. The final (take-home) exam makes up the remaining 40%. The zeroth Notebook gives an overview of the course:

are the most comprehensive and thorough compilation of mathematics I have ever seen in such a small and manageable format. They are a great resource for any mathematician, for they leave no topic untouched, and they are a great resource for students and teachers for the same reason with the added fact that having everything you need to know about a certain topic in concise but thorough terms makes learning and reviewing a breeze! THE ALGEBRA CONSPIRACY What The Educational Establishment Doesn't Want You To Hear!
More and more of our secondary school students are being required to take two or three years of college-prep mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, etc.) to qualify for a high school diploma. The problem is that many of these students cannot perform elementary arithmetic with common fractions, decimal fractions and percents, so any attempt to teach them Algebra is doomed to failure. In addition, many other students are able to pass these required math classes, but plan to enter jobs and professions where knowledge of college-prep mathematics is irrelevant such as teaching English or becoming a social worker, carpenter, journalist, etc. They are being forced to spend years studying material they will never use in their adult life.
All over the United States, many, many students are sitting in Algebra and Geometry classes that they may not want, that they may not need to fulfill requirements for their planned future employment, or that they may not be academically equipped to handle. In many school districts, this is creating an academic nightmare, as more and more

    Algebra I Online Project
About the Algebra I Online Project Welcome to Louisiana's Algebra I Online Project. This exciting pilot project, a part of the Louisiana Virtual School (LVS), is a Department of Education initiative that provides Louisiana students with a certified Algebra I instructor and with a high quality Algebra I curriculum through a web-based course. Who does this project target? The Algebra I Online Project targets rural and urban districts having schools with one or more sections of Algebra I which are taught by an uncertified mathematics teacher. In addition, districts desiring to provide certified teachers access to pedagogy training and mentoring in order to build capacity for strong mathematics instruction are eligible to participate. What is required for a district to participate? Schools and districts are provided with the high quality online curriculum, textbooks, workbooks and technology tools necessary for the course. There is no charge associated with participation the project; however, district and school responsibilities and commitments are required. Districts must commit to providing the technical infrastructure needed to implement an online class for one or more sections of Algebra I. Each student participating in the project must have access to a multimedia computer connected to the Internet every day in class. The district must also identify a teacher assigned to the Algebra I course who is pursuing math certification and agree to provide limited release time for the participant to participate in professional development opportunities (1 day per quarter).

How to Develop Your Online Course
This document has been prepared to assist faculty members who are considering teaching online. It has been prepared from the experiences of faculty and staff who have been teaching online. The guidelines are intended to be helpful and effort saving. These are only suggestions and not intended to limit your creativity and academic freedom. A special thanks to all those faculty and staff who have and continue to contribute to our understanding of how to successfully teach online. STEP 1: LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP Teaching on the Internet is trendy. You might even say it's the rage in education, but is it for you? Consider these things.
    • Do I have a computer (preferably a PC) in your office that is at least a Pentium III with at least 64 MB of RAM? Am I familiar with basic PC skills? (file structure, copying, moving files, keyboard and mouse functions, screen and windows features, etc.) Can I create and manipulate documents (formatting, copying, pasting, attaching and retrieving them)?

College Algebra Schedule Course Overview The vast majority of the course content will be learned as you interact with the Interactive Mathematics courseware. The Personal Academic Notebook (PAN), containing CDs, the Internet Client Software and validation disk, is purchased at the bookstore. You will be asked for the validation disk three weeks into the semester, so put it in a safe place. ( If you lose your validation disk you will be required to purchase it again The course is structured so that you may work at a pace that is faster (but not slower) than that required by scheduled examination dates. Students are evaluated on content through online quizzes, approximately five written tests and a comprehensive final exam.

Distance education is a method of teaching in which the students are not required to be physically present at a specific location during the term. Most often, regular mail is used to send written material, videos, audiotapes, and CD-ROMs to the student and to turn in the exercises; nowadays e-mail and the Web are used as well. Often students are required to come to meetings at regional offices on specific weekends, for example to take exams. Distance education is offered at all levels, but is most frequently an option for university-level studies. Full time or part-time study is possible, but most students choose part-time study. Research study is possible as well. One of the oldest distance education universities is the University of South Africa, which has been offering DE courses since 1946. The largest distance education university in the UK is the Open University founded 1969. In Germany the Fernuniversitat Hagen was founded 1974. All three are now Mega Universities. In 1999 the European Graduate School went online from both Switzerland and the USA. Distance education is an outgrowth of correspondence courses, which arose from the need to provide schooling to students in remote, sparsely populated areas that could not support a school. Such courses are generally offered at the primary or secondary level, often with the students' parents supervising their education.
