Linear Algebra Linear algebra is the study of linear sets of equations and their transformation properties. Linear algebra allows the analysis of rotations in space, least squares fitting , solution of coupled differential equations, determination of a circle passing through three given points, as well as many other problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering. Confusingly, linear algebra is not actually an algebra in the technical sense of the word "algebra" (i.e., a vector space V over a field F , and so on). The matrix and determinant are extremely useful tools of linear algebra. One central problem of linear algebra is the solution of the matrix equation
for x . While this can, in theory, be solved using a

(Enter summary) Abstract: . We present a unified approach for expressing high performance numerical linear algebra routines for a class of dense and sparse matrix formats and shapes. As with the Standard Template Library [7], we explicitly separate algorithms from data structures through the use of generic programming techniques. We conclude that such an approach does not hinder high performance. On the contrary, writing portable high performance codes is actually enabled with such an approach because the performance... This is the approach used in the the Matrix Template Library , which is a high performance numerical linear algebra library in C that uses generic programming techniques.

Also covers the educational concepts of visualisation and the scaffolding method. Instructions are given for solving systems of linear equations with integral, fractional, and algebraic coefficients. Degenerate systems are also discussed.
Users with limited experience of D ERIVE can easily follow the instructions. This also helps one become more familiar with the many useful features of D ERIVE
The experiments may be performed with teacher guidance, or for self-study.

The details of exams, project, homework, office hours, etc, are all here From the info page you can now also find links to the final exam, with solutions coming soon. These are notes for the course; they are not as full as the notes that will be given in the lectures, but most of the ideas should be covered here. They will be updated as the course progresses. Numbers in brackets give the corresponding section of the book. We will be covering the core topics from chapters 1 to 6 of the book: sections: 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.1. If we have time we will look at some other areas too. Applications will be mentioned, but we will not go into them all in detail in class; but please read about them in the book.
