Lesson Plans for Problem Solving
(Index)
CONTENT: This file contains a sequence of lesson plans designed to help your students learn to solve problems logically in all subjects that use mathematics for problem solving. Grade Level: Grades 3-4 and up OBJECTIVE: Teaching logical problem solving. The lessons provide the teacher with a systematic approach to introducing logical problem solving. Examples are used to illustrate the concepts involved in logical problem solving. These concepts are introduce in a logical order starting with the most basic ideas and evolving to a complete description of the tools of logical problem solving. They are applicable in all subjects at all grade levels that use mathematics for problem solving. Procedures: (1) Regardless of grade level use the lessons in order presented starting with Lesson 1. The lessons provide students in early grades with problem solving methods which will last a life time. More advanced students can correct ineffective problem solving habits. This becomes increasingly important at the highschool and college level since inadequate problem solving habits have become firmly embedded.

Title - Toothpick Algebra
By - Haley
Primary Subject - Math
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - 6-7
Concept to be Learned: The students will be using toothpicks to find patterns. These patterns will help the students develop equations that correspond to algebra. Rationale: It is very important to give the students a background understanding of algebraic equations. I feel that it will be much easier for the students to develop equations and to solve the equations. Objectives: The student will be able to:
Explore relationships between sets of numbers Identify patterns in data Write equations to describe patterns Represent patterns graphically
Materials: For Teacher: Picky Patterns Worksheets Toothpicks Groups for students to work in Note from LessonPlansPage.com: This lesson plan uses a worksheet that is not included. You may be able to create your own version of the worksheet, do without the worksheet, or contact the author at the e-mail address at the bottom of this lesson plan to request a copy.

Literature Connection: Bats on Parade by Kathi Appelt
Mathematical Strand: Algebra
Topic: Students will visualize polynomials using algebra tiles
Grade Level:
Lesson Created by: Marilyn Kilgore, Susan B. Anthony Middle School, Manhattan, KS
Lesson Description:
Materials
  • The book Bats on Parade , algebra tiles
1. Launching the lesson (engage):
  • Read the story
  • Talk about the pattern in the story. Discuss how this pattern could be written algebraically?
  • We talked about polynomials earlier. Suppose we want to model polynomials using tiles. Today we are going to do hands on algebra using algebra tiles. 2. Developing the lesson
  • Ask the students what a variable is in math. Today we will concentrate on the variables "x" and "y" in various polynomials. Hand out packages of algebra tiles to each student.
  • Using the overhead algebra tiles show the students "x 2" Explain each side is x by x therefore equals x2. Show y 2 tile (y by y) and
  • xy tile (x by y).
  • Ask students to use their tiles and model 2x 2 and 3y 2 and 5xy and 3
  • x 2 + 2 xy etc.

If You Hopped Like a Frog By David M. Schwartz. Mathematical Strand algebra. Topic Participants, Other lesson plans From This Book, Book Authors,
    http://www.ksu.edu/smartbooks/Lesson011.html
Literature connection: If You Hopped Like a Frog By David M. Schwartz
    Mathematical Strand: Algebra
Topic: Students will brainstorm several animal/personal scenarios (as exemplified in the text), select one, and write out an explanation of the comparison. They will apply the measurements/characteristics to themselves and a small sampling in the class. They should use any algebraic equation appropriate to demonstrate the comparison.
    Grade level:
Lesson created by: Shelley Faerber, Susan B. Anthony Middle School, Manhattan, KS
    Lesson Descriptions
    1. Read the book, If You Hopped Like a Frog , to the students. Discuss with the students the various ways you could represent the comparisons numerically.
    2. When you are satisfied with one of the discussions of the comparisons, read to them/show them the explanation given in the back of the book. Ask the students to work in pairs to come up with at least one other animal/personal comparison (Cheetah's speed and running home from school, speed of dolphin's swimming and how quickly you could get across the swimming pool, length of an elephant's nose and how long yours would be in comparison). Together have the students research (book or computer) the statistics/facts on that animal's characteristic.
    3. The student pair should then write up an explanation that would go in the "back of the book," just as David Schwartz has done. Data should be a combination of their own measurements and their research. The student pair should then collect the data measurements of the other students in the room/other variations of the measurement. This data should be used to construct a graph or table. The students will be asked to write out the numerical representation of these comparisons as an algebraic equation.

    PURPOSE:
Students will develop an understanding of and the applications for linear equations and their graphical displays. DESCRIPTION:
The unit on graphing linear equations will begin with students learning to manipulate an equation into slope-intercept form. This will be accomplished through classroom discussion and guided practice from an overhead projector and the chalkboard. Students will then have independent practice with a lesson from their algebra text. Another series of lessons will follow on graphing equations and the various methods of graphing a linear equation. The proposed lesson will follow after becoming familiar with slope intercept form, manipulating an equation, and graphing equations. Students will participate in a cooperative learning activity of matching a graphic display with an equation. A Kagan Activity; corner; will then be used for students to practice graphing an equation. After the review students will reinforce the concepts learned through the use of a graphing calculator. Future concepts such as parallel and perpendicular lines will also be introduced. Through the use of a LitePro and one computer, students will be introduced in the classroom to the computer program

A math classroom should provide practical experience in mathematical skills that are a bridge to the real world of jobs and to life learning skills. This means going beyond memorization into a world of Pre-Algebra reasoning and problem solving through the use of the Internet. Many students are afraid of algebra due to an array of reasons, but mostly because they are not comfortable with the concepts. In order for students in America to compete internationally with Japan and other countries, junior high classrooms must not be taught in the abstract mode. I hope with the help of this resource page you and your students will interact with the Internet and the students will become more comfortable with pre-algebra concepts.
