    The Linear Algebra Package
The linear algebra package covers matrix and vector manipulations, matrix decompositions and other operations. To be able to use any function or structure in the linear algebra package use the declaration but including individual module header files instead will speed up program compilation. There are two parts to the linear algebra package, one dealing with small fixed size vectors and matrices, between size two and four, and another for general size objects. This separation allows the most efficient implementation of linear algebra operations when the size of the objects is known and small. Being designed to support image- and goemetry-based applications, the size range from two to four allows 2D image and 3D camera/world objects to be manipulated, in homogeneous coordinates where required; thus four is the natural size limit for Gandalf. A major design feature of the linear algebra package is the application of implicit operations . By this is meant, for example, that adding a matrix to the transpose of another matrix is a

The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra (FTA) states Every polynomial equation of degree n with complex coefficients has n roots in the complex numbers. In fact there are many equivalent formulations: for example that every real polynomial can be expressed as the product of real linear and real quadratic factors. Early studies of equations by al-Khwarizmi (c 800) only allowed positive real roots and the FTA was not relevant. Cardan was the first to realise that one could work with quantities more general than the real numbers. This discovery was made in the course of studying a formula which gave the roots of a cubic equation. The formula when applied to the equation x x + 4 gave an answer involving -121 yet Cardan knew that the equation had x = 4 as a solution. He was able to manipulate with his 'complex numbers' to obtain the right answer yet he in no way understood his own mathematics. Bombelli , in his Algebra , published in 1572, was to produce a proper set of rules for manipulating these 'complex numbers'. Descartes in 1637 says that one can 'imagine' for every equation of degree n n roots but these imagined roots do not correspond to any real quantity.

General Topics Extended Abstracts ... Picture Gallery General The purpose of this meeting is to bring together researchers from various subdisciplines of Computer Science and Mathematics who use the calculus of relations and/or Kleene algebra as methodological and conceptual tools in their work. Due to the substantial common interest and overlap of the two communities, these two workshops will be held jointly in 2003. As in the previous RelMiCS meeting, contributions out of the EU COST action 274 Theory and Applications of Relational Structures as Knowledge Instruments ( TARSKI ) are highly appreciated. The relational calculus originated with Tarski's abstract algebraic treatment of binary relations in 1941. Kleene Algebra is a related algebraic system for calculating with sequential composition, choice and finite iteration. It was first introduced by Kleene in 1956 and further developed by Conway in 1971. The classical application of Kleene algebra is in the theory of formal languages, where it is one of many equivalent approaches to the description of regular languages. Modeling with relational structures is often formulated in terms of Kleene algebras. An important subclass of Kleene algebras are the relational algebras, which constitute the basis of Tarski's work.

    James W. Demmel
"Jim Demmel's book on applied numerical linear algebra is a wonderful text blending together the mathematical basis, good numerical software, and practical knowledge for solving real problems. It is destined to be a classic." Jack Dongarra, Department of Computer Science, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
"This book has many unprecedented features as a graduate textbook and research reference book on numerical linear algebra and matrix computations. Many topics appear for the first time in a graduate textbook, such as single precision iterative refinement, relative perturbation theory, full-version of divide-and-conquer method, high precision Jacobi method, connection of QR method and the Toda lattice and so on. …It is astonishing to what extent this book, by means of systematic and easily understandable exposition, has succeeded in making clear the state of the art of numerical linear algebra theory, methods and analysis which we numerical analysts consider the lively frontier of our current work." Zhaoujun Bai, University of Kentucky.
"This is an excellent graduate-level textbook for people who want to learn or teach the state of the art of numerical linear algebra. It covers systematically all the fundamental topics in theory, as well as software implementation. The book is very easy to use in the classroom since it provides pointers, in the book and on the author's home page, to lots of available Matlab and LAPACK routines, and it has a large number of homework problems marked with Easy, Medium and Hard. The book requires the students to have a stronger background in linear algebra than most other engineering books on numerical linear algebra." Xia-Chuan Cai, Department of Computer Science, University of Colorado.

International Matrix Group which was established in 1987. The general goal of ILAS is to encourage activities in linear algebra.
    http://www.math.technion.ac.il/iic/ILAS_GENERAL.html
ILAS - The International Linear Algebra Society - was founded in 1989 as the successor to the International Matrix Group which was established in 1987. The general goal of ILAS is to encourage activities in linear algebra. ILAS aims to encourage and support existing groups and individuals active in organizing meetings and publications in all aspects of linear algebra. We have no intention of supplanting or competing with existing organizations, our entire purpose is international co-ordination, to assist the development of linear algebra. We may add new activities where and when desirable. We welcome activities in all applications of linear algebra and we desire a proper share for theoretical matrix analysis and abstract linear algebra. ILAS initiates, encourages and co-ordinates linear algebra meetings, and supports them by the means available, such as information delivery. ILAS Inaugural Meeting took place in Provo, Utah, USA, on August 12-15, 1989. You can check for the list of all ILAS Conferences ILAS' Education Committee handles undergraduate and graduate Linear Algebra studies. Among others, it operates a joint NSF- ILAS Project to Augment the Teaching Linear Algebra through the use of Software Tools (ATLAST). The project has offered several workshops in various places.
