WORCESTERSHIRE ALGAE J.J.Day December 2002 As John Dodge remarks in Worcestershire Record No.13 the county's Algae have received little study. However, the literature is not quite as sparse, as suggested. As BSBI Vice-county Recorder I have collected a bibliography of published references on Worcestershire Botany. This is predominately for vascular plants but on a quick trawl through these I can add the following references to the Algae. Published references on Worcestershire Algae Lees, E., Remarks upon some conspicuous aquatic and terrestrial Algae, recently observed in the vicinity of the Malvern Hills. by Peter H. Raven, Ray F. Evert, Susan E. Eichhorn
This to me is one of the finest undergraduate texts on botany that I have been able to find. The explanations are extremely lucid and the diagrams and photographs are excellently researched and displayed. This book because of its clarity, maybe used by the general public and as a source of fascinating information into the world of plants. Not only is the anatomy and physiology well covered by the authors, but they delve into diversity, genetics and also cover the fundamentals of primary and secondary metabolism and area that is of real importance to those studying vegetarianism, food phytochemistry, nutrition and herbal medicine. It is a must for those who can afford to spend that little bit extra on a contemporary botanical text. Dr John Wilkinson

Adventitious buds form along a stem, generally after the stem has had an injury. This is a survival response for the plant. These adventitious buds will differentiate either into roots or shoots depending upon whether they are above or below ground. An Introduction to Microscopy Under the stereo microscope these tiny flowers will be huge and can be seen in three dimensions. Botany Botanical objects are of special interest for the beginner in microscopy. Interesting material can be found anywhere around you, even in the living room. No difficult preparations are needed, you can start by looking at a whole flower, leaf or root under the stereo microscope. Click the thumbnail to see examples of how flowers look under the stereo microscope To be able to see the cell structure of plants you need instead of a stereo microcope a microscope with stronger magnification and transmitted light. You have to make thin sections (Coupes) because the microscope works with incident light. The section has to be thin enough for the light to pass. These sections are not difficult to make but it requires some skill to make such thin sections that you see one or two layers of cells. Use a razor blad to cut a thin slice. A good way is to hold the razor in one hand and cut by rotating the stem of a plant. If you don't want to mess with razors there is a very simple solution to get thin plant samples. In every garden you can find
