BMI Calculator ... Home Alcohol, or ethyl alcohol (ethanol), refers to the intoxicating ingredient found in wine, beer and hard liquor. Alcohol arises naturally from carbohydrates when certain micro-organisms metabolize them in the absence of oxygen, called fermentation. Beer, wine and other liquor contain different amounts of alcohol. The amount of alcohol in distilled liquor is known as “proof”. Proof refers to the amount of alcohol in the liquor; for example, 100 proof liquor contains 50% alcohol, 40 proof liquor contains 20% alcohol, and so on. Traditional wine has approximately 8-14% alcohol, while regular beer has 4-6% alcohol.

And even more frequently, clients have questions about whether drinking a little bit of alcohol may actually be heart-healthy. Thanks to an ever-growing body of research on the topic, we now have more answers to those questions, as well as more information on the problems related to alcohol abuse.

October 18, 1996
Web posted at: 7:20 p.m. EDT From Correspondent Eugenia Halsey WASHINGTON (CNN) Is moderate drinking good for your health? Nearly three dozen studies suggest that a few drinks a week could help prevent heart disease. Now, the government wants to know if alcohol can also stave off brittle bones and help protect older women from other diseases. To learn more about alcohol's effects, a government agency, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, has awarded more than $2 million of taxpayer money in grants for scientific study of the question. The NIAAA was founded in 1970 to deal with the serious health problems caused by heavy drinking. Its decision to check out the flip side, whether light drinking can actually do some good, is not in conflict with its original mission, said Dr. Mary Dufour, deputy director of the agency. "Our mission is research, and so we think this is an important thing to check out," she said. The $2 million-plus grants will fund 15 new studies on the effects of moderate drinking. Some of the money went to the Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where researcher Nicolas Guzman is trying to learn how alcohol may help prevent heart disease.

Alcohol
Alcohol is one of the most commonly used drugs in Australia. People drink to relax, celebrate, have fun, gain confidence and forget problems. It is a depressant drug, which means it slows down the activity of the brain and the central nervous system. In moderation alcohol is not harmful to most people. However, excessive drinking can cause a number of social, personal and health problems. When people are not 100% in control of their speech, movement and judgement it can lead to accidents, drink driving, unsafe sex, assault, self-harm or overdose. For some, drinking can jeopardise their job, relationships, and cause legal or financial difficulties.
Alcohol in the body
  • After the first drink is swallowed the alcohol travels to the stomach and small intestine, where 90% of the alcohol passes through into the blood stream. The remaining 10% of alcohol leaves the body quickly through breath, sweat and urine.

Binge drinking is when you drink a lot in one go. It is very risky because too much alcohol can cause you to become unconscious or get alcohol poisoning. This is much more likely to happen in young people than adults. It's also easy to have an accident or do something really stupid when you get that drunk.

Alcohol And Health
Some Background
Alcohol has been used medicinally throughout recorded history; its medicinal properties are mentioned 191 times in the Old and New Testaments. As early as the turn of the century there was evidence that moderate consumption of alcohol was associated with a decrease in the risk of heart attack. And the evidence of health benefits of moderate consumption has continued to grow over time. A review of research evidence from 1900 to 1986 found a strong, consistent relationship To your health The health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption have long been known. One of the earliest scientific studies on the subject was published in the

But I heard drinking was good for my health!
In 1991, the CBS news program 60 Minutes ran a story called "The French Paradox" which suggested that drinking alcohol, or at least red wine, reduced the risk of heart disease. Many people considered this a medical recommendation to drink. Epidemiological studies indicate that moderate drinkers live longer than non-drinkers and heavy drinkers. The reasons are not clear. In 2001, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have found that moderate alcohol consumption among people who have a specific version of a gene that metabolizes alcohol have a greater reduction in risk of heart disease and higher HDL (good cholesterol) levels ( read story ). In addition, other Harvard researchers found that people with heart disease who consume an average of 14 alcoholic drinks a week appear less likely to die from a heart attack than nondrinkers ( read story The Harvard scientists caution that heavy consumption of alcohol can lead to negative cardiovascular outcomes such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, and sudden cardiac death. Other doctors warn that even moderate drinking may raise the risks of colon and breast cancer, some types of stroke, fetal damage, driving accidents, abusive behavior, and criminal activities.

Alcohol and your health
Alcohol is one of the most widely used, and widely misunderstood, substances in today's society. It has myriad effects on the mental and physical well being of the human body. Many effects are very well known, including its ability to make people lose their inhibitions, their reflexes, and depending on the amount of alcohol consumed, their mental and physical faculties. The main effect of alcohol, and a major reason why many people enjoy moderate drinking, is a gradual dulling of the reactions of the brain and nervous system. One or two drinks act as a tranquilizer or relaxant. Even in small quantities, alcohol is not a stimulant as many people believe. It is easy to notice that when someone has consumed enough alcohol they become flushed. This is due to the fact that alcohol is a strong vasodilator, meaning it increases the diameter of blood vessels. And while this does in fact cause the drinker to have the sensation of warmth, it actually causes the loss of body heat. When one is thirsty, therefore, it is not a good idea to drink an alcoholic beverage. Alcohol is a strong diuretic, meaning it increases the amount of water removed from the blood by the kidneys and, therefore, increases urination. Heavy drinking causes the level of sugar in the blood to fall rapidly. This may lead, a few hours after a drinking session, to hypoglycemia, causing the drinker to feel weak, dizzy, confused, and abnormally hungry. Drinking tends to increase sexual desire, but it also decreases a man's ability to maintain an erection, possibly because alcohol dulls the nerves that control erection and ejaculation.

It's official - a little bit of your favourite tipple does you good. Recent studies suggest a glass or two of wine or beer a day (any alcohol has a similar effect) may well help to protect your heart, strengthen your bones and boost your immune system - even possibly adding to your defences against some types of cancer. But the key to getting these benefits is to drink sensibly. Regular heavy drinking can lead to dependency, damage internal organs and impair your mental health. It can also wreak havoc both at home and at work, and dramatically increase your risk of accidents and injuries.
Tips for drinking sensibly
Women are advised to drink no more than two units of alcohol per day and men no more than three units, with at least two drink-free days for everyone every week. (One unit = a small glass of wine/half a pint of normal strength beer or lager/a single pub measure of spirits).

The glass ceiling Dr Wynnie Chan investigates the nation's drinking habits and whether or not we're all over our limit advertisement Current alcohol recommendations in the UK are up to 4 units a day for men and up to 3 units per day for women, regardless of body weight. One unit contains 8g or 10ml of alcohol and is equivalent to:
  • 1 single measure of spirits
  • 1 small glass of wine
  • 1 measure of fortified wine, e.g. port or whisky
Moderate alcohol consumption has in fact been shown to have a protective effect against coronary heart disease amongst men and women over 50 and post-menopausal women. However, studies have also shown that this amount can increase the concentration of steroid hormones in pre-menopausal women, which may increase their risk of breast cancer.
