Quota pars operis tanti nobis committur? - Seneca Memory - A practical quality which allows us to weigh what has already been done against what might be done now. Memory is therefore a key to responsible action....Romanticism is a fantasized version of the past. Unpleasant events and personal or national failures are erased, while comforts and successes are exaggerated. Or wrongs may be exaggerated and comforts and successes erased. On either side romanticism is intended to energize false hopes. In its most exaggerated form it denies the relevance of memory and constructs free-standing abstract ideologies. - John Ralston Saul what's new at this archive, the last modification having been made on 27 November, 2001 (always check what's new first!!), or go to the top of the archive

Government Alberta: History and People History: The Aboriginal people, the Piegan, Cree, Blackfoot, Blood, Gros Ventre, Sarcee, Kootenay, Beaver and Slavey Indians, speaking a variety of Athapaskan and Algonkian languages, were the first people to live in what is now Alberta. They inhabited a vast wilderness territory, living nomadically hunting and trapping and foraging the rich natural resources of the land. The woodland tribes of the central and northern regions, became partners of the European fur traders who arrived in the 18th century. The first European to reach what is now Alberta was Anthony Henday in 1754, although the land was claimed by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670. Peter Pond, of the North West Company, established the first fur-trading post in 1778. The rival Hudson's Bay Company built competing fur-trading posts over the next century and a half. The rivalry ended in 1821, when the two companies merged. Interest in colonization of the west increased in Britain after the American Civil War. In 1867 with the passage of the British North America Act (BNA) and the establishment of the Dominion of Canada the new Canadian Government acquired the North West Territories, including present day Alberta from the Hudson's Bay Company.

Alberta History moves into the Future
Jackie Bell, Manager: Development Initiatives, University of Calgary Press
It was only eighteen months ago that the University of Calgary Press began work on Our Future, Our Past: The Alberta Heritage Digitization Project (AHDP). Since then, this historical Web site has become the largest of its kind in Alberta, and will soon be the largest of this type in Canada. Through this Web site, scholars and students, all over the world, have been given free access to Alberta's rare and vital historical materials via the Internet. The site is one of only 200 academically reviewed sites with Canadian content on the Internet today.
The Web site currently contains historical accounts written by some of Alberta's earliest settlers, and local histories written by individuals, families, and by community and historical associations. The site also contains early Alberta newspapers from 1880 to 1950. Maxwell L. Foran, Curator of the Western Heritage Centre, says: "The value of these sources to researchers cannot be understated. The availability of Alberta newspapers on line in enough to make any historian¹s head swim. To be able to access at will the regional breadth and depth of our social, economic, political and cultural history is like a dream come true." Dr. Frits Pannekoek, Alberta historian and Director of Information Resources, says the site shows many sides of our past: "History is fun it's insulting it's people warts and all." Just take a brief look at the ³The Eye Opener² newspaper to see that this is true:

St. Mary's College was established by an Act of the Alberta Legislature in 1986 as a non-profit, "private college for the promotion of higher education for Catholics and others." The College is open to all, regardless of personal convictions, who value the Catholic higher education tradition of rigorous intellectual, ethical inquiry and a disciplined sensitivity to social justice and the common good. The College offered its first credit courses in 1994. An initial focus of the academic program was professional courses for teachers in the Catholic school system. In January, 1997, in collaboration with the Calgary Catholic Board of Education, the College introduced two professional development certificate programs, one for teachers of religious education and the other for Catholic school administrators. The College moved in 1999 to its current, permanent campus located in south Calgary, where the famous Father Lacombe Home was situated, on the edge of Fish Creek Park. The campus includes several historic buildings, a classroom block with an auditorium, as well as chemistry and biology labs; a Students Association building; and an administration and faculty office block. St. Basil's Hall, which houses the College's library and state-of-the-art computer labs, is a new building that was

    Crowsnest Pass History
Through out the years the Crowsnest Pass has seen a rich and exciting history of events unfold, such as the discovery of the Pass by Thomas Blakiston, the rich history of its coal mining industry, tragedies such as the Frank Slide and the Hillcrest Mine explosion, the rum-running exploits of Emperor Pic, train robbers, and shoot-outs. The first mention in written record was by Thomas Blakiston in 1858 in his preliminary report. He reported seeing a nesting site of ravens lodge des corbeaux - at the base of a Crowsnest Mountain and this is likely the source of the name Crowsnest. There is, however, an unsubstantiated story about a band of Crow Indians, trapped and massacred at by pursuing Blackfoot at the base of Crowsnest Mountain. The name Crowsnest was then given to the pass, a river, and a lake. Lumber The first industry that came to the pass after the fur trade was that of lumber with the creation of the MacLaren Lumber Company by Senator Peter MacLaren in 1887. The Senator had a contract to supply ties to the Canadian Pacific Railway and was given land north of a town called Sentinel near Crowsnest Mountain. The saw mill was built in Blairmore. By building flumes and putting a dam in to raise the level of Allison Lake, MacLaren was able to float his logs the 20 miles down stream to his mill in Blairmore. Other logging companies most of which did not survive the fires of 1910, and the early twenties and the over cutting of timber. The only survivors were some small companies, such as Charlie Sartoris’ company that trucked in logs from the Elk Valley to the west and the Burmis Lumber Company that logged the North Kootenay Pass to the south.

to get Adobe Acrobat Reader. Before Canada was a Nation ... In the days before the CPR was built, travellers to the west came up the easterly flowing rivers, through the waterways of Manitoba, moving up the North Saskatchewan River by way of Battleford to Edmonton. These men were fur traders, and they kept primarily to the wooded central and northern areas, where they established trading posts. Fort Edmonton developed early into a major centre of trade for the Hudson's Bay Company, and soon attracted settlers who ventured into agricultural pursuits. Development in southern Alberta came almost a century later. There were several reasons for this, with some of the foremost being that is was not as easily accessible from Winnipeg across the vast dry stretches of barren prairie, and that it was the territory of the fierce Blackfoot Indians. However, by the 1860s and 1870s, the region was being invaded by men from the American West, who were greedy for the profits of the buffalo hunt. The whiskey trade flourished in a wild and lawless society. After the massacre of a group of Indian families at Cypress Hills in 1873, the North West Mounted Police force was created to bring order to the Canadian west. In 1875 "F" Troop, consisting of 37 men, established Fort Calgary at the junction of the Bow and Elbow Rivers.

This sprightly and amusing video manages to inform viewers about an important and often overlooked part of Alberta's and Canada's history. A part of "The People's History of the West" series, this video shows what happened in Leduc in 1947 as well as explaining the importance of Imperial Oil's find in 1947 which opened the floodgates for the oil trade in Alberta.
The video focuses on photographs from the era and cartoons illustrating stories told by Vern "Dry Hole" Hunter, the head driller from the Leduc well. Vern's own story, as well as stories he tells to illustrate the hardships and wonders of the time, are informative and amusing, a wonderful combination. Imperial Oil's decision to try one more well, after almost 150 wells came up dry, adds a sense of drama to the eventual success of Leduc's well.
This short video would be a wonderful addition to a discussion of natural resources, Alberta's history, or Alberta's economy. By 1985, the Leduc field had produced 35,000,000 barrels, finding a place in Alberta's history.
