A Milestone in the History of Canadian Women
Background on the Persons Case
The British North America Act, or BNA Act, of 1867, created the Dominion of Canada and provided many of its governing principles. The BNA Act used the word "persons" to refer to more than one person, and "he" to refer to one person. A ruling in British common law in 1876 emphasized the problem for Canadian women by saying "Women are persons in matters of pains and penalties, but are not persons in matters of rights and privileges."

A Short Alberta History
Take a trip down history lane. Alberta's history dates back to prehistoric times, but is best told by beginning in the eighteenth century. In prehistoric times, Alberta was a large inland swamp and lake with roaming dinosaurs. Eventually Alberta was populated by Indian bands. It wasn't until the 1800s that the white man 's thirst for western lands caused them to interact heavily with the Albertan Indians. A Quick Trip to the 1800s summarizes prehistoric Alberta to the first contacts with the Indians in the early eighteenth century. Baby's First Steps describes the first contact between the white man and Indians in the late 1800s. Becoming a Province covers Alberta's steps in becoming a province. Building a Province describes Alberta's present. Alberta is known as the princess province. The province and one of its most famous landmarks are both named after the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria of England, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. At the time of Alberta's creation in 1882 the Princess was married to the Marquess of Lorne who was Governor General between 1878 and 1882. In 1905 the province entered the Confederation of Canada as a province. Alberta was now a full-fledged member of Canada.

http://www.uinta6.k12.wy.us/WWW/MS/7grade/Social Studies/canada/North West Mount
The first European to reach Alberta was the fur trader Anthony Henday , who explored the vicinity of present-day Red Deer and Edmonton in 1754-55. He spent the winter with a group of Blackfoot, with whom he traded and went buffalo hunting. The fur traders traveled into Alberta using its rivers. Their northern route brought them to Lake Athabasca. They built Fort Chipewyan , Alberta's first European settlement, near the mouth of the Athabasca River in 1778. The traders came to central Alberta by the North Saskatchewan River, on which they built Fort Edmonton, at the site of the future city named for the fort - Edmonton. In 1799, the fur traders built a third centre at Rocky Mountain House, near the mountain pass that leads to British Columbia. The fur trade changed the lives of the First Nations. Their somewhat nomadic lifestyle became focused on gathering, transporting and trading furs with European explorers and settlers. In return for their furs, they received guns, blankets and metal goods. The trade also led to greater knowledge of the geography of Alberta, especially through the work of David Thompson. In the 1790s and early 1800s, Thompson drew the first good maps of the Alberta region as he explored and surveyed for the North-West Company (NWC).

Becoming Alberta
The area that became Alberta was originally populated by a number of Indian tribes. Among them were the Blackfoot, Peigan, Blood, Sarcee, Slavey, Cree, Chipewyan and Beaver. These tribes prevailed until the 1880's, when the first European's came. Eventually the Indian people were outnumbered by the French and English-speaking migrants from Eastern Canada. Alberta's history in the 18th and 19th centuries revolved around the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company. The two rivals established trading posts in Alberta, competing to acquire the most beaver pelts. They mapped much of the countryside as they traveled the rivers and developed the fur-trading industry. The companies merged in 1821. By the middle of the 19th century, Christian missionaries began to confront the fur traders for control of the area. In 1869, the Canadian government bought all of the Hudson Bay Company's territory, as well as the rest of the land that would later make up the province of Alberta. The Dominion Lands Act was created to distribute land to settlers in 1872. A quarter section of land (160 acres) cost $10.00. At the time of purchase, the settlers had to agree to build a house and cultivate the plot. Their toil and adventures to tame the land were made easier with the development of a new, fast-growing variety of wheat.

History and Politics
Alberta was originally part of the vast territory granted to the Hudson's Bay Company by King Charles II in 1670, and its early history was dominated by the fur trade. The first European known to have reached (1754) present-day Alberta was Anthony Hendon of the Hudson's Bay Company. There was also much exploration of the region by the Montreal-based North West Company, which merged with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821. Traders arrived from the upper Great Lakes before Sir Alexander Mackenzie crossed (1793) the region on his way to the Pacific. In 1794 a Hudson's Bay Company fort was built at the site of present-day Edmonton. Destroyed by natives in 1807, it was rebuilt 12 years later and for 50 years thereafter served traders and missionaries within a wide radius. The area remained under the control of the Hudson's Bay Company until 1870 when it was sold to the newly created confederation of Canada. In 1874 the Northwest Mounted Police established Fort Macleod in S Alberta, and the following year they built a log fort on the site of present-day Calgary. An act of 1882 created four administrative divisions from the Northwest Territories, and one was named Alberta in honor of Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, whose husband was then governor-general of Canada. The Canadian Pacific Railway came through in the mid-1880s, opening up the area to ranchers and homesteaders, but settlement was slow. In 1891 there were only 14,500 nonnative settlers in the present province. To populate the vast, fertile land, the Canadian government advertised for immigrants, offering many free acres as inducement. Over the next five years immigrants poured in owing to the government's vigorous immigration policy, dwindling available arable land in the U.S. West, the introduction of a new strain of fast-maturing hard spring wheat, and the easing of the 22-year-long depression endured by North America. Edmonton boomed as a supply base during the 1898 Klondike gold rush, and its growth continued during the early 1900s as immigrants began settling surrounding farmlands.
