Alberta, Canada
Welcome to Alberta, one of the Westernmost provinces of Canada. With our mix of prairies, rolling hills and snowy mountains, small towns and cosmopolitan cities, and ancient history and modern attractions, we are sure to have something to interest everyone. The province of Alberta covers an area of over 600,000 square kilometers, and is home to more than 2.5 million people. The capital is Edmonton , located in north central Alberta. Alberta has an official coat-of-arms, flag, flower, motto, fish, bird, mammal, tree, stone and tartan . The province is bordered to the east by the province of Saskatchewan, to the west by the Rocky Mountains and British Columbia, to the north by the Northwest Territories and to the south by the state of Montana in the United States. The minimum wage in alberta is the lowest in canada. What measures will the albertagovernment take in order to bring it in line with standards of adequacy?

List of issues to be taken up in connection with the consideration of the third periodic report of Canada United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights - Implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (June 10, 1998) Alberta Government Response 3. What is the opinion of federal, provincial and municipal governments as to the effect of current or proposed trade and investment agreements such as NAFTA, FTAA and the MAI on their ability to fulfill obligations under the Covenant and what processes have been put in place to review this question? Alberta believes the Canada - U.S. Free-Trade Agreement and the NAFTA have not had any detrimental effect on the ability of the province to pursue and implement economic, social, or cultural policies it considers appropriate and necessary for the well-being of all Albertans. To the contrary, the Canada - U.S. FTA and NAFTA have provided substantial economic benefits to the provincial economy, resulting in better circumstances than would otherwise have been the case to pursue broader economic, social and cultural objectives. With respect to the Free-Trade Agreement of the Americas and the Multilateral Agreement on Investment, as there are no agreements in place (they are currently being negotiated), there are no actual circumstances to evaluate as to their effect on the province. As is the case in the negotiation of all of Canada's international trade and investment agreements, the province participates fully to ensure that its interests and concerns are addressed

New Version of Alberta Government's FV Roundtable web site
Much of the misandrist material has been removed — on or just prior to 2004 03 03. Is that a good reason to celebrate a victory? It is encouraging to see the changes that were made, but let's not get up our hopes too high. (Update 2004 03 05: See postscript The people that constructed the prior misandrist (man-hating) version of the Alberta Government's FV Roundtable website are still around.* We have absolutely no idea of the full extent of their power and influence in the whole process and whether that power extends as much as it did before to taint the roundtable process itself (what we do know is that their power is obviously not limitless, or the revisions would not have been made). Nor do we know in the least whether equitable levels of funding will now become available for pro-family and pro-male organizations in proportion to the demographics of the Alberta population. I will be pleasantly surprised if that should be the case, but I have misgivings.
* See a critique of that version of the website Some of the sources of misleading statistics that were previously cited by Children's Services are still being cited now, right in the

Conservation groups challenge Alberta government to stop 'private' negotiations to sell public forests; more parks needed
Background See also
July 18, 2001 Conservation groups across Alberta are challenging the provincial government to stop private negotiations with two corporations intended to permanently commit to logging over 14,000 square kilometres of forests under long-term contracts of 20 to 25 years.
In southern Alberta, Spray Lakes Sawmills (SLS) is in closed-door negotiations with government to obtain over 4000 square kilometres under a Forest Management Agreement (FMA) including 2300 square kilometres of Kananaskis Country. The company and the provincial government recently boycotted locally organized meetings about the logging contracts. Even local community leaders of Turner Valley have called for public review before any FMA agreements are signed. Public opinion polls have consistently reported Albertans want Kananaskis protected from more development. The groups point to a commitment that the Premier made in May of 1999 to complete a Regional Sustainable Development Strategy (RSDS) for Kananaskis Country. Despite this promise, the Government of Alberta is pushing ahead with plans to turn control of the forests in Kananaskis Country over to Spray Lake Sawmills through an FMA. Further protection measures would require the public to pay SLS compensation.

Press release - March 12, 2002 Canadian teachers condemn Alberta government's blow to public education and democracy
(Ottawa - CTF News Service) The President of the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) is calling on the Alberta government to rescind its regressive measures that seriously undermine public education and teachers' basic democratic rights. "There is no doubt that the Alberta government is shirking its responsibility towards children and public education." says CTF President Doug Willard. "We are very concerned that Premier Klein has displayed little compunction about breaking his promise to teachers and denying them a fair and impartial arbitration of outstanding issues. "Providing an arbitration process on the one hand and then restricting the powers of the arbitrator to rule in an impartial and comprehensive manner makes a mockery of the purpose of arbitration. "The Alberta government has removed the fairness aspect of the process by setting its own limits and rules. The restrictions imposed on the arbitrator to ignore classroom conditions will do nothing to attract and retain teachers in the province. This is an aberration of the arbitration process in the truest sense.
