Burrowing Owl Photo: Greg Lasley In order to protect Alberta's Endangered species, it's important to find the answers to three questions:
  • what does it mean when a species is 'endangered?'
  • which Alberta species are endangered?
  • what can be done to help them?
This page provides information that will help you find answers to the first two questions and describes some organizations and programs that are working to restore extinct species or to keep endangered species from becoming extinct. The Alberta Special Places Page tells you about Alberta's six distinct types of habitat on which species depend. It is our belief that an important way to protect species is to provide long term protection for at least a portion of their habitat. For many people, the term ' endangered species ' brings to mind well known, large animals like the African Elephant. According to the
  • 20 species of Alberta fish and wildlife are in serious risk of dying out in our province.
  • 2 species are already gone.
  • only 55 per cent of the 535 species found in Alberta are considered healthy.
So, the problem exists right here in our own backyard.

ABORIGINAL SELF-GOVERNMENT IN CANADA Denis Wall, Ph.D. Draft September, 1998 INTRODUCTION VIEWS OF ABORIGINAL SELF-GOVERNMENT Numerous federal reports have stated that hope of a renewed relationship between aboriginal and non-aboriginal peoples in Canada lies in aboriginal self-government (e.g., Canada, 1984; INAC, 1997; RCAP, 1996). The contemporary ideal of aboriginal self-government has been described by many as parity between aboriginal, provincial and federal powers, a far cry from the kinds of colonial controls governments have exhibited.2 The usual sentiment is that colonial controls and the resulting abuse governments have heaped on aboriginal people for more than a century must be rejected. The movement toward aboriginal self-government is intended to provide greater aboriginal autonomy in relation to financial and legislative authority. Self-government also is not necessarily represented by universally criteria. The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples has said "It lies with each group to determine the character and timing of any moves to enhance its own autonomy." (RCAP, 1993: 41)

Wheat board lashes out at Alberta government over grain marketing bill By JOHN COTTER
EDMONTON (CP) - The Alberta government is spending up to $1 million on a misinformation campaign that unfairly discredits the Canadian Wheat Board, board officials charged Tuesday. To counter Alberta's push against its monopoly over Prairie wheat and barley sales, the agency will launch its own campaign to drive home its message that farmers are better off with the board. Alberta is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a glitzy PR campaign that is "short on facts and long on fiction," said Ken Ritter, the farmer-elected chairman of the board of directors. The province is expected to pass legislation this spring that would lead to a legal challenge of the board's long-held monopoly. The private member's bill proposes setting up a 10-year provincewide trial that would allow farmers to choose how they sell their grain.

Critics attack Alberta's advertising spending By DARCY HENTON
EDMONTON (CP) - The cost of communicating with Albertans is growing by leaps and bounds. The Alberta government spent $7.3 million in advertising in 2002-03 - nearly double the $4 million spent the previous year. Last year, the Alberta government spent $230,000 in advertising to promote its own budget. This year it spent $400,000 on a campaign condemning the Canadian Wheat Board. By comparison, $7.3 million is the estimated annual cost for 50 new Edmonton police officers or 50 researchers at Alberta universities.

"Finance Minister Patricia Nelson will introduce amendments to the Insurance Act in the upcoming Legislative session that will freeze premium rates retroactively to October 30," Klein said. "So in effect, the freeze is in place right now, assuming the amendments are passed by the Legislature.
