Canada is a vast country - the second largest country in the world after Russia. Canada encompasses territory from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the high Arctic to the northern border of the continental U.S.A. Although very much a "northern" country the terrain and geography of Canada is very diverse. As well as the popular image of Canada as a country of pristine forests and snowy vistas, there are also deserts and badlands, temperate rain forests and long and wide beaches. ( continue... Geography on the Internet
Like the tangible world of geographical earth space, the digital world of cyber space is a wonderfully complex place. There are loads and loads of information resources out there that you'll find useful and interesting; the trick is finding it. Well, navigating the Internet is more art than science, but here are some useful guidelines:
  • When you have a reasonably specific idea what you are looking forexpressed in terms of one or more key words or phrasesthen a search engine such as Google is probably your best bet. Type in your term(s), and see what serendipitous goodies Google brings.
  • When your area of interest is broadly or poorly defined, then you might be better served by a hierarchical web guide such as Yahoo! . For example, select the Science category, then the Geography subcategory, then the Cartography sub-subcategory, and you've got a hot-linked listing of dozens of mapping-related sites and additional subcategories.

http://www.dbic.com/guide/tm1-5.html
1.5 Geographic and Demographic Considerations Bounded by three oceans - the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic - Canada is comprised of 10 provinces and two territories, Yukon and Northwest Territories. The provinces, in order of location from east to west, are: Prince Edward Island; Newfoundland (including Labrador); Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Quebec; Ontario; Manitoba; Saskatchewan; Alberta; and British Columbia. Each province varies in size. The country's physical geography varies from tundra in the north, grand mountains in the west, flat prairie land in the interior plains, to gentle coastlines in both Atlantic Canada and British Columbia. Approximately 61.1% of the Canadian population is clustered around four major centres: Montreal; Toronto; Winnipeg; and Vancouver. To break this figure down further, Ontario houses 36.9% of the population, Quebec - 25.3%, B.C. - 12% and Alberta - 9.3%. Accord-ing to the 1991 Census prepared by Statistics Canada, all of these figures are up from previous years. Approximately 80% of all Canadians live within 100 miles of the 3,308-mile border shared by Canada and the U.S. Covering 9,922,385 square kilometres (3,830,840 square miles), Canada is the world's second largest country, next to Russia. Canada's neighbour to the south, the United States, is the fourth largest country in the world, encompassing 9,363,130 square kilometres (3,614,170 square miles). While Canada is physically larger, its population is significantly smaller, with its 27.3 million people amounting to only 10.7% of the U.S. population. For this reason, marketing to Canadians is more expensive per capita than it is to most other markets. Distribution costs are dramatically higher per capita due to the large, sparsely populated countryside with a wide variety of climates, terrains, etc. Other factors that add to the overall cost of doing business in Canada include: two official languages (English and French); generally higher postage and media rates on a cost-per-thousand basis; and higher printing (including labour) costs.

http://www.cuug.ab.ca:8001/~johnstos/geosci.html
GeoScience: K-12 Resources
This "page" is an ongoing project to see what relevant K-12 GeoScience resources are available "out there". This page (since it sits in Calgary ) has a definite petroleum or 'soft rock' bias. Also, since we're "in" Alberta, one of the initial focuses will start from Alberta Education's curriculum. This prescribes GeoScience topics in Science classes in Grade 3/7/8/11/12. Another aim of this page is to identify Calgary, Albertan, Canadian and International field trips and GeoScience sites of interest. I've also included general Earth Science Meta-links. Also the hope is that classroom projects, activities, and other GeoScience information produced by students will be pointed to or exhibited here. The overall point is to foster and facilitate dialogue among the 'greater' GeoScience community. [Top] [Grade 3/7/8/11/12] [Cal/Ab/Cdn/Earth Sites] [MetaLinks] All suggestions, materials, etc. to johnstos@cuug.ab.ca will be appreciated. Communication by students, teachers and other GeoScience Web authors is especially desired, in order to make this and other pages more useful to young GeoScientists. "The world we live in presents an endless variety of fascinating problems which excite our wonder and curiosity ... They indicate that - in general terms - scientific investigation is concerned with the manifestations and transformations of matter and energy in space and time. Put more briefly and philosophically, science is concerned with relationships between events." (from "Principles of Physical Geology", Arthur Holmes)
