    Alberta cities lose Kyoto fight
    Calgary split emerges during debate
    By Grady Semmens
    Calgary Herald
    June 2, 2002
It was far from a united voice, but Alberta communities were virtually the lone opponents of the Kyoto Protocol in a prickly debate Saturday that saw some opponents to the plan suffer the slings and arrows of their colleagues in civic governments across the country. And with a groundswell of support for the controversial greenhouse gas reduction plan known from the outset, it kept some council members, including Calgary's mayor, from going to bat on the issue. "They actually booed me," Ald. Ric McIver said, chuckling as he left Saturday's discussion. "They feel good because they voted for it, but it's meaningless unless it's done right." The membership of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, which represents about 1,000 cities, towns and villages from across the country, voted overwhelmingly to call for Ottawa to ratify Kyoto, as long as it includes several "made in Canada" conditions ensuring provinces don't suffer economic ruin. The 1997 Kyoto protocol calls for the industrialized countries that signed the agreement to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to six per cent less than they produced in 1990 by 2012.

Statement by Jon Lord Part 1: John Lord to Alberta legislative assembly - Mar 25/04 Here is the full text of Jon Lord's (MLA Calgary Currie) telework statement, made to Alberta's Legislative Assembly: Mr. Speaker, the Industrial revolution changed our world two centuries ago. Among other things, massive numbers of peoples in rural areas, moved to cities to obtain higher paying city jobs, and rural life was completely altered as a result. But now, a new revolution is taking place, creating an enormous economic opportunity to re-invigorate rural areas again, providing city jobs and paycheques, to people living in and enjoying a country lifestyle - and that is not all. It also the greatest opportunity to enable disabled people to earn a good living, with dignity- and in fact, this new revolution, has a plethora of other benefits for everyone in society today. It's called teleworking - working from home, on your computers, and it is rapidly sweeping the employment world. Because we have the SuperNet , Alberta is uniquely positioned to lead the way in Canada, which is good because Canada is actually falling way behind. According to Bob Fortier, one of Canada's foremost telework pioneers, Canada has finally reached an estimated 1 million teleworkers nationally today - but compare that with the US now at 28 million, up 17% just in the last year alone. Obviously, Teleworking is soon going to be having major impacts on employee recruitment and retention even here in Alberta, very quickly, if we aren't offering similar opportunities. People don't even have to move anymore - the Great Canadian Brain Drain, is rapidly becoming virtual.

The Department has a very good international reputation, and offers a very collegial work environment, with exciting opportunities in both teaching an research. It offers full undergraduate and graduate programs (M.A., Ph.D.) and very active research groups in Ethics History and Philosophy of Science , and Language and Logic . Faculty in the department usually teach four courses per year. At Calgary, the Fall and Winter terms are each 13 weeks long and run from September to April, leaving over four months per year without regular teaching duties. There are teaching opportunities (carrying additional remuneration) in the Spring and Summer terms, however.

Information about Alberta
Alberta About
Alberta is Canada at its best. For many people the beauty of the Canadian Rockies , which rise with overwhelming majesty from the rippling prairies, is one of the main reasons for coming to the country. Most visitors confine themselves to the four contiguous national parks - Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay - enclaves that straddle the southern portion of the range, a vast area whose boundaries spill over into British Columbia. Two smaller parks, Glacier and Mount Revelstoke , lie firmly in BC and not, technically, in the Rockies, but scenically and logistically they form part of the same region. Managed with remarkable efficiency and integrity, all the parks are easily accessible segments of a much wider wilderness of peaks and forests that extend north from the Canada-US border, before merging into the ranges of the Yukon and Alaska.

How ALBERTA got its name.
The district of Alberta was created in 1882, and enlarged to become a province of Canada on September 1, 1905. The name was suggested by the Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, in honour of his wife, H.R.H. Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria. EDMONTON Name taken from Fort Edmonton, built in 1795 farther down the North Saskatchewan River than the present city. The fort was destroyed in 1807, but was relocated within the site of the present city limits by the Hudson's Bay Company some time before 1819. The fort is reputed to have been named by William Tomison for Edmonton, now part of metropolitan London, England, in honour of the birthplace of John Peter Pruden, a clerk of the Hudson's Bay Company.
