Jewish History of Albania
Modern Period
The Holocaust Period
ALBANIA, Balkan state (bordering the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Greece) on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea; from 1478 to 1913 under the sovereignty of Turkey. Benjamin of Tudela heard of people living in the region, evidently Wallachians, toward the end of the 12th century: "They are not strong in the faith of the Nazarenes and call each other by Jewish names, and some say that they are Jews." Jewish settlements were founded at the beginning of the 16th century in the Albanian seaports by exiles from Spain, who were joined by refugees from other areas. There were sizeable trading communities at Berat, Durazzo, Elbassan, and Valona: here there were Castilian, Catalonian, Sicilian, Portuguese, and Apulian synagogues. In 1673 Shabbetai Zevi was exiled by the sultan to Albania, dying in Dulcigno. In 1685, during the Turkish-Venetian war, members of the Valona community fled to Berat. Those who remained were taken prisoner, including Nehemiah Hayon. Between 1788 and 1822 Jews suffered from the extortions of Ali Pasha. The Jewish minorities were accused of collaborating to suppress the rebels during the Albanian revolt in 1911. After World War I only a small number of Jews were living in Albania, in Koritsa (1927). According to a 1930 census, there were 204 Jewish inhabitants in Albania. The Albanian community was granted official recognition on April 2, 1937. In 1939, some families from Austria and Germany took refuge in Tirana and Durazzo.

    An Albanian Menu
    International Recipes

    marga@lacabe.com

I must confess that before hitting this, the second stop in my international culinary adventure, I had never given much thought to Albanian food. I'd never traveled to Albania, never come across, much less eaten at, an Albanian restaurant and indeed, beyond the war in Kosovo, never given much thought to Albania at all. It seems that I'm not alone on this, Albanian cookbooks seem to be few and far between, and there are few websites discussing Albanian food. However, I was able to find at least a little bit. It seems that historically, Albania has been under the domination of different empires: from the Greeks and Roman in antiquity, to more recently, the Ottomans. Albanian food has been heavily influenced by all of these conquerors, as well as by their neighbors. Indeed, many of the recipes I found were modified versions of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean Staples: qofte (savory meatballs fried or grilled), dolma (stuffed grape leaves) and baklava among them. Greek-influenced stuffed vegetables are also quite common as are Turkish-inspired meat-filled-pastries. As in most countries, Albanian food used to vary considerably from region to region. It seems, however, that during communist times the food has become more homogenized, as well as lightened - though it continues to rely heavily in the use of oil. All this said, I wasn't particularly excited about cooking Albanian food. The recipes I found did not seem particularly appealing, and had I not been doing this project I probably wouldn't have cooked the food at all. That would have been a mistake, for most of the things I prepared where rather good and my guests thoroughly enjoyed the change of pace and novelty of this menu.

    History
The Illyrians, ancestors of today's Albanians, occupied the western Balkans in the 2nd millennium BC, and a convoy of interested warring states followed. The Greeks arrived in the 7th century BC, set up self governing colonies and in the main traded peacefully with the Illyrians, who set up their own tribal states by the 4th century BC. The Greeks took over the south, and still have a claim on it today. The expanding Roman Empire came to blows with an expanding Illyrian Empire based around Shkodra in present day northern Albania, and the Illyrians came off the worse after the Romans sent 200 warships there in 228 BC. The Romans spread their rule to the whole of the Balkans by 167 BC, and in the main Illyria enjoyed peace and prosperity - as long as you weren't one of the slaves working on the agricultural estates. When the Romans couldn't hold on any longer, the Visigoths, Huns, Ostrogoths and Slavs salivating outside city limits struck poses and compared armies during the 5th and 6th centuries AD. In the 11th century, the Byzantines, Bulgarians and Normans squabbled over the northern region of Illyria, which, before Roman times, had stretched north to the Danube. Serbia, the Turks under the Ottoman Empire and even the Venetians all came and stayed, but in 1479 the Ottomans invaded and ruled until 1912, letting the region languish as the most backward part of Europe. In 1878, the Albanian League at Prizen (in present day Kosovo, Yugoslavia) began a struggle for autonomy that continues today. The Turkish army squashed the first glimmers of independence in 1881, but further uprisings followed.

Kosovo Albanian leader Rugova in Italy
    Rugova May 5, 1999

Web posted at: 12:49 p.m. EDT (1649 GMT)
ROME (CNN) Kosovo Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova arrived in Rome with his family on Wednesday from Yugoslavia, officials said. It had been believed that Rugova was virtually under house arrest in Yugoslavia since NATO air strikes began in March. The only times he had been seen were in a few appearances with Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic on Serbian TV, which many Western observers believed were either staged or dated. Rugova is considered the father of Democratic League of Kosovo, although his non-violent approach to Kosovar independence was overshadowed by the aggressive stance of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Rome Bureau Chief Gayle Young contributed to this report.
