In the early eighth century the Arabs conquered Artsakh, as well as all of Albania, and Islam penetrated the area. (Until that time Gregorianism had flourished among the Christian population .) Artsakh was part of the Albanian kindgdom in the ninth and tenth centuries . In the mid-11th century it was invaded by the Seljuk Turks…. In the 1230's, Artsakh was conquered by the Mongols, and from that time most of its territory was called Karabakh." Oguz is mainly known for its tobacco plantations although there are a few architectural monuments (towers, fortresses etc.) dating from the 13 - 15th centuries in the villages of Jalut, Mukhas, Filfili and Vardanli. A necropolis dating from the Iron Age (11 - 7th century BC) is near Vardanli. Most visitors miss these sights as they are heading for Sheki. Close to Sheki is the village of Orta Zeyzit where Christian architectural monuments of Caucasian Albania are found. They date from the 6-7th century."

Site Map For hundreds of years, the people of Serbia have considered the region of Kosovo to be the homeland of their history and culture. From the late 1300's until 1912 however, this area was ruled by the Ottoman Turks, an Islamic people who once controlled a vast empire. Over the course of Ottoman Turkish rule, many Serbs either left Kosovo or converted from Christianity to Islam. Also, the Albanian Muslim (a Muslim is someone who believes in Islam) population of the area grew, until the majority of Kosovo inhabitants were no longer Serb Christians. Albanians and Serbs are quite different in terms of language, religion and culture. Ever since Serbia acquired Kosovo in the First Balkan War (1912), conflict between these two groups has erupted periodically in this disputed region. Below is a listing of these conflicts accompanied by a brief description.

Defining the roots
of the albanian music...
M any of us in the western world wonder what the Albanian music sounds like. After such a long time of isolation, and basically zero chance to get to hear it, some say that there is nothing special to it, it resembles the Turkish and Greek music. Others say that the Albanian musical tradition has derived from Indian roots, and the rest do not even know where Albania is, or what language its people speak. Not many people would be able to tell you that Illyricum (today Shqiperia - Albania), was one of the first areas to be reached by the Gospel of Christ. St. Paul himself has written about his trip to Illyricum in his letters.
Therefore, one can argue that Illyricum was influenced by the new Christian liturgy which would have been distributed around the early churches at that time.
This has been the subject of dispute between Albanian scholars themselves since there is little proof of an authentic Albanian music.
We can elaborate on the fact that early music was used a lot to animate the rituals of different Illyrian tribes. Songs of this time in history would have consisted of a single, simple and repetitive melodic line which would have been accompanied mostly by percussion instruments, backing voices and primitive wind instruments. We do not know if the early harp was widely used in this area before the birth of Christ. The main historical fact that would favour the harp's existence in the Balkans, would be the invasion from the Roman Empire, which would have brought with it, its culture and instruments.

    NATO's objectives
NATO's objectives in relation to the conflict in Kosovo were set out in the Statement issued at the Extraordinary Meeting of the North Atlantic Council held at NATO on 12 April 1999 and were reaffirmed by Heads of State and Government in Washington on 23 April 1999:
    • a verifiable stop to all military action and the immediate ending of violence and repression; the withdrawal from Kosovo of the military, police and paramilitary forces; the stationing in Kosovo of an international military presence; the unconditional and safe return of all refugees and displaced persons and unhindered access to them by humanitarian aid organisations; the establishment of a political framework agreement for Kosovo on the basis of the Rambouillet Accords, in conformity with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
Throughout the conflict, the achievement of these objectives, accompanied by measures to ensure their full implementation, has been regarded by the Alliance as the prerequisite for bringing to an end the violence and human suffering in Kosovo.

    Everything Started with Kosovo
"Everything started with Kosovo, and everything will finish with Kosovo."
The truth of this quotation about the breakup of Yugoslavia, which Miranda Vickers uses as the title of her book's last chapter, is beginning to be recognized around the world. Among the many problems plaguing the Balkans today, Kosovo is the "Stealth Bomber": until now it has shown up on the radar screens of very few people outside the region, but it carries the potential to demolish the current international order of the peninsula. Now that this potential is belatedly being recognized, various governments are scrambling to find effective means to neutralize the threat, but most of their schemes sound like wishful thinking, at best. And, like the U.S. Air Force's Stealth Bomber, the Kosovo problem took an awfully long time to develop. Vickers attempts to walk her readers through the history of that development. Given the popular interest in (and even greater ignorance about) Kosovo and the rest of the Balkans, there should be a ready audience for her book. Since opposing Serbian and Albanian views of the region's history are key elements in the conflict, a clear, critical account by an impartial observer would be of great help to anyone interested in the problem and in its eventual just solution. THE ROOTS OF A CONFLICT
Language, religion and history divide Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo A patch of land not much larger than Israel - this is what Kosovo's Serbs and ethnic Albanians have in common. They speak different languages, have different religious beliefs and give different accounts of their history. The ethnic Albanians speak a language belonging to the Indo-European language family - one as ancient as Latin. The language spoken by the Serbs is Slavonic. Since the early 1980's the ethnic Albanians have boycotted the educational system in Kosovo, in favour of their own schools funded by Albanians living abroad. As a result, a great number of the Albanians do not know the Serb language; at the same time, only few of the Serbs have learnt Albanian. Most of the ethnic Albanians are Muslims, successors of Catholic and Orthodox Christians who had adopted Islam during the 500-year-long Ottoman rule. The Serbs are staunch Orthodox Christians and observe the Christian tradition. Nowadays the ethnic Albanians account for 90 per cent of the two-million population of Kosovo. This number has sharply grown since the end of World War II, when the Serbs comprised half of the Kosovar population. This change is a result of the high birth rate characteristic of the Kosovar Albanians and the gradual outflow of Serbs from Kosovo, a mainly rural area, to more affluent Serb cities.
