A BRIEF HISTORY The Illyrians The origins of the Albanian people are not definitely known, but data drawn from history and from linguistic, archaeological, and anthropological studies have led to the
conclusion that Albanians are the direct descendants of the ancient Illyrians and that
the latter were natives of the lands they inhabited. Similarly, the Albanian language
derives from the language of the Illyrians, the transition from Illyrian to Albanian
apparently occurring between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. Illyrian culture is believed to have evolved from the Stone Age and to have manifested itself in the territory of Albania toward the beginning of the Bronze Age, about 2000 BC. The Illyrians were not a uniform body of people but a conglomeration of many tribes that inhabited the western part of the Balkans, from what is now Slovenia in the northwest to (and including) the region of Epirus, which extends about halfway down the mainland of modern Greece. In general, Illyrians in the highlands ofAlbania were more isolated than those in the lowlands, and their culture evolved more slowlya distinction that persisted throughout Albania's history. In its beginning, the kingdom of Illyria comprised the actual territories of

    Defining the roots
    of the albanian music...
M any of us in the western world wonder what the Albanian music sounds like. After such a long time of isolation, and basically zero chance to get to hear it, some say that there is nothing special to it, it resembles the Turkish and Greek music. Others say that the Albanian musical tradition has derived from Indian roots, and the rest do not even know where Albania is, or what language its people speak. Not many people would be able to tell you that Illyricum (today Shqiperia - Albania), was one of the first areas to be reached by the Gospel of Christ. St. Paul himself has written about his trip to Illyricum in his letters.
Therefore, one can argue that Illyricum was influenced by the new Christian liturgy which would have been distributed around the early churches at that time.
This has been the subject of dispute between Albanian scholars themselves since there is little proof of an authentic Albanian music.
We can elaborate on the fact that early music was used a lot to animate the rituals of different Illyrian tribes. Songs of this time in history would have consisted of a single, simple and repetitive melodic line which would have been accompanied mostly by percussion instruments, backing voices and primitive wind instruments. We do not know if the early harp was widely used in this area before the birth of Christ. The main historical fact that would favour the harp's existence in the Balkans, would be the invasion from the Roman Empire, which would have brought with it, its culture and instruments.

This brief history, based on authoritative published sources, is intended to provide readers with an objective and reasonably concise history of the hundreds of years of struggle between Albanians and Serbs in Kosovo. Interested readers are strongly encouraged to consult the sources cited for a much fuller treatment of the subject. At the end of the historical summary an analysis of the NATO military intervention of 1999 is provided. This represents the author's opinion of the intervention only, and is not intended to be part of the short history of Kosovo that is provided in this document. The postscript brings us up-to-date on the essentials of the continuing controversies as of November15, 2002. History Prior to 19th Century The earliest known inhabitants of Kosovo were called Illyrians by both Greeks and Romans. Albanians today claim to be direct descendants of the Illyrians. Serbian scholars claim that Albanians appeared on the scene in the early Middle Ages as a result of intermarriage between nomadic shepherds and unromanized remnants of Illyrians and Dardanians from Thrace. Tracing such descents is difficult but the people living in the region before the arrival of the Serbs from the North are likely to have some genetic relationships to Albanians, but DNA data would be needed to definitively settle the claim, which in any case is hardly germane to the current conflict. The region was conquered by Alexander the Great 300 years before Christ and became part of the Roman province of Dardania in the 4th century A. D.

    HISTORY
The name Albania is derived from an ancient Illyrian tribe, the Albanoi, forbears of the modern Albanians. The Albanian name for their country is Shqiperia. Prior to the 20th century, Albania was subject to foreign domination except for a brief period (1443-78) of revolt from Ottoman rule. Albania declared its independence during the first Balkan War in 1912 and remained independent after the World War I largely through the intercession of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson at the Paris Peace Conference. In 1939, Italy under Mussolini annexed Albania. Following Italy's 1943 surrender to Allied Powers during World War II, German troops occupied the country. Partisan bands, including the communist-led National Liberation Front (NLF), gained control in November 1944 following the German withdrawal. Since Yugoslav communists were instrumental in creating the Albanian Communist Party of Labor in November 1941, the NLF regime, led by Enver Hoxha, became a virtual satellite of Yugoslavia until the Tito-Stalin split in 1948. Subsequently, Albania's hardline brand of communism led to growing difficulties with the Soviet Union under Krushchev, coming to a head in 1961 when the Soviet leaders openly denounced Albania at a party congress. The two states broke diplomatic relations later that year; however, Albania continued nominal membership in the Warsaw Pact until the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. In 1945, an informal U.S. mission was sent to Albania to study the possibility of establishing relations with the NLF regime. However, the regime refused to recognize the validity of prewar treaties and increasingly harassed the U.S. mission until it was withdrawn in November 1946. The U.S. maintained no contact with the Albanian Government between 1946 and 1990.

The first railways in Albania were mineral and military narrow gauge lines built between 1917 and in the 1930’s, some of these systems were extensive, but none remain intact today. The standard gauge system was opened in stages from 1947 to the 1980’s, mostly along the coastal plain. The route from Durrës to Podgradec is the only line to be built any distance into the mountainous interior. The only link with any other railways opened in 1984 as a freight only line between Shkodër and the border with Montenegro at Han-i-Hotit. This was out of use from 1991 to 1996 (closed by civil unrest and then UN sanctions on the former Yugoslavia) and from 1997 to 2003 (damaged from looting). Until in the 1990’s locomotives and rolling stock were obtained either as donations from, or barter trade with, Albania’s political allies. The Soviet Union donated some of the first steam locomotives, carriages were traded from China in the late 1960’s and diesel locomotives were obtained from Czechoslovakia in exchange for Albanian chrome ore. More recently Albania has acquired second-hand rolling stock from France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Some wagons and a few carriages were built locally in Shkodër.

    History of Serbia and Montenegro
The Ottoman rule The battle of Kosovo Polje (Kosovo Plain –“field of the black birds”) - that in 1389 defined the fate of the Balkans – constitutes the milestone of the Serb sense of nationhood. In that occasion Prince Lazar Hrbeljanovic commanding Serb vassals and Montenegrin, Bosnian and Croat allies faced the Ottoman troops led by Sultan Murat I. The defeat of the allied Balkan forces determined the beginning of the affirmation of the Ottoman rule in the region. When, the subsequent fall of the town of Smedrevo decreed the occupation of Serbia by the Turks, no force on the field could still oppose inclusion in the Ottoman Empire. At the same time that period saw the development of an entire tradition of epic poems about the Serb heroes dead in what was to become a mythic battle.
