View from Kruja Albanian History - A Brief Outline Albanians are descendants of the Illyrians. In the year 1478, the Ottoman Empire conquered the country and cut off Albania from Western civilization for more than four centuries. This marked the conversion of the majority of Albanians to Islam.
In 1939, Albania was occupied by Italy and in 1943, by Germany. In 1944 the country was liberated. Since then until 1990, Albania was a communist state where almost all aspects of life were controlled by the ruling party.

Reflecting on the History of Albanian Repression and Resistance: A Journey through Montenegro, Macedonia, and Kosova
by Hon. Joseph J. DioGuardi

The main purpose of the latest Albanian American Civic League delegation to the Balkans was to visit Montenegro for the first time with a senior Member of Congress. We took Congressman Tom Lantos and his wife, Annette, with us to see and hear firsthand the continuing struggle of the fast-dwindling Albanian population in Ulqin, Tuzi, Kraja, and Plave-Guci to retain their national Albanian identity, cultural heritage, and even property rights. Much more about this historic and most important aspect of our delegation will be presented soon in a detailed report by Shirley Cloyes, our Balkan Affairs Adviser.
The purpose of this short, preliminary review of our recent trip, including photographs, is to share some thoughts about our Albanian history of repression and of resistance, which struck me as our delegation traveled through Montenegro, Macedonia, and Kosova.
When I first gazed on the ancient Illyrian castle in beautiful Ulqin, the first image evoked in my mind was of our Albanian forebears fighting off the Romans to preserve their freedom. Passing later through now Slavic Tivar on the way to Albanian Tuzi, one can visualize the brutal massacre of 4,300 Albanians trapped by the Serbian and Montenegrin armies at the end of World War II—a precursor to the unthinkable brutality of Srebrenica in 1995. That brutality was confirmed by Azem Hajdini, one of the few remaining survivors, when we met with him in Prishtina a week later. As Hajdini talked about the forced march of Albanian troops to Tivar, I was reminded of the similar way in which so many Americans were killed at the hands of the Japanese army on the Baton death march.

History: The reign of King Zog, who assumed the throne in 1928, ended in April 1939, when Albania was conquered by Mussolini’s Italian forces. Resistance to the occupation was led by the Communists, who took power in November 1944. The new regime, under Enver Hoxha, fell out with a succession of allies – Tito’s Yugoslavia, the Soviets and the Chinese – before retreating into almost total isolation. This situation prevailed until Hoxha’s death in 1985. For the rest of the decade, a gradual process of internal political and economic reform took place, along with a slow development of contacts with the outside world. The Communists restyled themselves the Partia Socialiste ë Shqipërisë (SPA – Socialist Party of Albania) as a variety of opposition parties began to emerge. The most important of these was the Partia Demokratike të Shqipërisë The 1997 crisis highlighted major structural problems in Albania’s society and economy and deterred, if only temporarily, foreign aid and investment. The Meta government has since done much to repair the country’s position and Albania now enjoys access to funding from the main international donor bodies (IMF, World Bank and EBRD), as well as growing contacts with major European countries, such as Italy and France. Albania hopes to follow the rest of eastern Europe into the European Union and NATO. But some of Albania’s immediate neighbours, especially Macedonia and Serbia, remain worried about the possible influence of their large ethnic Albanian populations. Further afield, Albanian criminal gangs are highly active throughout most of western Europe, causing serious damage to the country’s reputation.

Dr. Michael Galaty of the sociology and anthropology department at Millsaps College has spent the past several years conducting archaeological research in the remote areas of Albania. Galaty will present a lecture about his studies, titled "Digging the Eagle: Archaeology in the Developing Nation of Albania," on Feb. 7 at 12:30 p.m. in Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex room 215. The program is free and open to the public. "My lecture will focus on modern Albanian history and the difficulties of conducting archaeological research in a developing nation," Galaty said. "Albania shows us how difficult it is for a poor, developing country to create new economic and political institutions, basically from scratch."
The lecture, which is sponsored by the Millsaps Forum Series, will be accompanied by the opening of a Lewis Art Gallery exhibit featuring Garett Holden's photographs of Albania. Holden, a freelance photographer, received his B.A. degree from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. The lecture will be immediately followed by a special gallery reception.
"Holden's work is tremendous, depicting a country experiencing massive change," Galaty said. "Albania is an absolutely fascinating place, and it comes through in these photos. The photos document the challenges and rewards of practicing archaeology in such a setting."

    Monographs
Albanian American monograph holdings consist of approximately thirty five volumes. Two subject areas Albanian Orthodoxy and politics constitute the strengths of the collection. Useful materials also exist in the areas of Albanian American literature, history, migration, and the ethnic press. Of the three religions traditional to the Albanian American community Eastern Orthodoxy, Islam, and Roman Catholicism the IHRC collections highlight the first. Sources on the Albanian Orthodox Church in America, founded in New York in 1908, include works by Fan S. Noli, a composer and politician as well as the Church's first ordained priest (later its Metropolitan), and the Fiftieth Anniversary Book of the Albanian Orthodox Church in America, 1908-1958 (1960). Primary sources are also available pertaining to the Albanian Orthodox Diocese of America, founded after World War II. Writings of Bishop Mark Lipa include Informative and Progress Report of Our Diocese, an essay pamphlet with a lay council's report (1961), and Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (1964); there is also an album marking the consecration of a church in Chicago (Consecration of the Saint Nicholas Albanian Orthodox Church, Oct. 10, 1971, 1971).
