16.04.2004. RZB and Albanian Government sign Closing of Purchase of Savings Bank of Albania RZB takes over 100 per cent of the largest Albanian bank and implements operative leadership. Price of USD 126 million means largest privatization project in the Albanian history. Savings Bank completes the strong presence of RZB's network in Central and Eastern Europe . Successful privatization is strong signal to international investment community, RZB will act as a gateway for foreign investors and introduce new products and services. Raiffeisen Zentralbank Österreich AG (RZB) and the Albanian Government signed the closing regarding the purchase of Banka e Kursimeve e Shqipërisë (BK) , the Savings Bank of Albania , yesterday evening in Tirana. RZB won a tender in last December and now received all necessary approvals from the Austrian and Albanian authorities. The purchase price is USD 126 million for a 100 per cent share in BK, representing a 2.5 multiple of the book value. "We are proud that Raiffeisen invests in the leading Albanian bank and we believe that this is a very positive signal to other international investors. I expect that Raiffeisen's commitment will increase the competitiveness of the Albanian banking sector and result in an enlargement of the range of banking products", said Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano on the occasion of the Signing Ceremony.

Angry crowds take to streets in Albania
Many lose their life savings after financial schemes default
TIRANA, Albania Government buildings across southern Albania were set afire Sunday as protests mounted over the collapse of high-risk investment schemes that have cost many people their life savings. Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Tirana, the capital, hurling stones at riot police and shouting, "The government are thieves. We want our money back." Police momentarily retreated from the crowd of about 35,000 people at Skanderbeg Square, scene of the downfall of the country's former Stalinist regime at the beginning of the 1990s. But they returned with water cannons and turned dogs loose on the protesters. Also on Sunday, the Albanian parliament handed President Sali Berisha special powers to restore order. Parliament, sitting for the first time on a Sunday since the ruling right-wing Democratic Party swept to power in a 1992 general election, gave Berisha the power to deploy troops to unblock roads and guard government buildings. "This decision has nothing to do with a state of emergency but the traffic, water depots, oil reserves, town halls ... and strategic sites should not be attacked," Foreign Minister Tritan Shehu said.

TIRANA, Albania Albania, reeling under an influx of thousands of refugees from Kosovo, in Serbia, warned Wednesday that the Serbian army may be preparing to enter Albania to hunt down rebels. Any such incursion would immediately draw Albania into the conflict in Kosovo. There is widespread sympathy here for the ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo who are challenging Serbian rule in the province. As the fighting in Kosovo intensifies, it also threatens to draw in Macedonia, where an ethnic Albanian minority also supports the separatists. Diplomats fear a new Balkan war as destructive as the one in Bosnia. "The Serbs have been manufacturing so-called evidence to say that Albanian territory is being used to launch terrorist attacks," Prime Minister Fatos Nano said Wednesday in an interview in his office. "We have had several reports of incursions into our territory by Serb commando teams that appear to be scouting the area," he said. "When you look at what the Serbs are attempting to do, to create a security belt along the border, you soon realize it is impossible in such a mountainous area. The next step is to try and enlarge the area under fire, an enlargement that would push the conflict into Albania." The prime minister, who sent an urgent appeal to NATO commanders Wednesday asking for troops to secure the border area, conceded that it was impossible to monitor the rugged terrain.

By M. Bozinovich In 1927 London Times remarked that "Everyone knows that Albania happens to be an independent state today, simply because the Powers did not quite know what to do about it when the Turkish Empire broke up." The Turkish ambassador to Vienna himself has warned the proponents of independence, Austria and Italy, that annual cost would be 15 million gold franks (about $1.5 billion). In 1923 French diplomat M. Hunger corroborated this figure with a remark that the amount corresponds to the country's economy. In other words, cost of the government in Albania equals the value of all the goods produced. To recoup the tribute paid to Albania, both Italy and Austria had bouts with deep diplomatic and military involvement in Albania, all without any profit and with dangerous and deadly geopolitical outcomes for the region. Kosovo might be of similar fate simply because the proponents of Albanian nationalism want to grant it independence yet it is unclear whether they are also willing to pay an exorbitant tribute to the Kosovo Alabanian government whose taxable base of less then 2 million people earning average of $30 per month cannot yield not 1% of required costs to run that country.

Second consecutive provocation by the Albanian state 17 November 2003 Hellenic Front condemns once again the provocative attitude of the Albanian state in the 16th November by-election in Himarra. Despite the expected victory of the ethnic Greek candidate mayor Vassilios Bolanos , the Hoxha-nostalgic Albanian government dragged the villagers of Drimades, Kiparo, Ano Himarra and Piliouri to the polling stations for the second time, after an undisguised falsification of the first round results. These people, showing admirable patience and strength, went, as many as in the first round, though many of them immigrants to Greece, to elect their candidate. Against their will to express in a democratic way their beliefs, they had to face the following obstacles:
  • All members of the returning boards were forced to were jackets with the Albanian coat of arms.
  • The presidency of the returning boards was violently taken over by the thugs of the Albanian Socialist Party, among them the branded criminal and wanted by the Interpol Tanas Duni . This "bully-boy" had been photographed by the Hellenic Front delegation in the 2000 local elections to guard (!!!) armed to the teeth (3 revolvers and many hand-grenades) the polling station in Drimades, while he had then thrashed the voting delegate of the Greek minority organization Omonoia

    Introduction
In 1990 Albania ended 44 years of xenophobic communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. The transition has proven difficult as corrupt governments have tried to deal with severe unemployment, the collapse of a fraudulent nationwide investment scheme, widespread gangsterism, and massive refugee influxes from neighboring Kosovo.
