FORUM: working together works best
Albanian Encouragement Project by Art Moore
As a cooperative mission effort in Europe, the Albanian Encouragement Project (AEP) may be unique. The 30 evangelical missions in this coalition, while maintaining their autonomy, do work together on common objectives. AEP's primary aim is to see indigenous churches planted in all of Albania. As inter-mission relationships develop, information-sharing and cooperative efforts happen more through natural ties than through formal structures. Missionaries from two different missions, for example, have joined forces to develop a training program for church-planters. In addition to church-planting, AEP has developed common objectives in theological education, literature work, and relief and development. AEP intends to gradually turn over the above functions to an indigenous alliance of evangelical churches known as the Evangelical Brotherhood. The use of that name links the present evangelical movement to one that existed in Albania before World War II. While serving member missions, AEP desires to provide others ministering, or considering ministry, in Albania with helpful information. Churches and mission organizations caught up in the excitement of the new openness in Albania must know that the essential need now is for church-planters who are willing to take at least a year or two to learn the language and begin to understand a very complex culture. Foreigners who come offering a fast fix will be welcomed by Albanians, but will do little of lasting value.

Alexidze Until 2001 when Dr. Zaza Alexidze succeeded in deciphering the Caucasian Albanian written language from manuscripts that dated possibly back to the 5th century, some specialists in Caucasian studies were skeptical that the Albanian culture was even sophisticated enough to have an alphabet. Alexidze's discovery proves otherwise and has the following implications for theoretical or practical consideration: Unknown Alphabet discovered This is the first time that modern scholars have been provided with irrefutable proof that Caucasian Albanians had a highly developed alphabet system that had been used for extended texts. Previously, only a few inscriptions of the Caucasian Albanian script had been found in short inscriptions on the cornices of buildings, candlesticks and ceramics, but even to this day, these examples have not been successfully deciphered.

It was also a signal from the powers that be that individual initiative can be very threatening and may not be rewarded. 31-year-old Muka—a well-known activist, curator and contemporary art teacher at Tirana's Fine Arts Academy—is credited with invigorating art in post-Communist Albania. Under Muka, the ICC, or "Pyramid," developed as a high-energy environment that entertained and educated the public with a constant array of exhibitions and arts performances, many of which were international in scale. In Muka's absence, the center may lose the financial support for its USD 100,000 Soros-funded Mediatheque, slated to open this January, and it will most likely lose its international reknown, the very lifeblood, along with funding, of an international contemporary institution in a transitional society such as Albania.

VLORE, APRIL 1 (ATA) - A peaceful rally was held in the Flag Square, Vlore center, to the memory of the 83 victims of the tragedy of the Straits of Otranto. Speakers in the rally said that Vlore would be in mourning for the victims the whole week, during which people would make rituals from the Flag Square to the seashore in the Skele city quarter where they would throw flowers in the sea. One of the speakers refuted the news broadcast by Italian TV channels yesterday, according to which an anti-Italian rally was held in the city of Vlore on March 31, 1997.

    The Albanians or '''Shqiptar

Due to the high rate of migration of various ethnic groups throughout the Balkans in the last two decades, exact figures are difficult to obtain. A tenuous breakdown of Albanians by location is as follows:

    Albanian Folk Culture
Albania has a very rich folk culture. It was first studied in the 19century,initially mostly by foreign scholars who were interested in linguistics. The ballad of Doruntina was the object of a pionieering study by the German poet Burger .In general, there is a marked difference between the northern and the sourthern traditions. In the north songs are usually sung by a single individual ,and the dominant pattern is of heroic narrative,on historical themes, usually the struggle against the Turks. In the south music and song are more communal, with songs and poems for several performers, often with a choral element. There are also many different folk dances for each region. In the south dances are often accompanied by polyphonic songs ,of great antiquity. In the commoner dances the performers move in a rectilinear pattern, and with pirouettes.Albanian music uses a variety of traditional instruments, some of which are unique to the country. The flute is the most common instrument, along with the bagpipes, the drum and the lahuta The lahuta is a stringed instrument resembling the medieval and Renaissance lutes of northern Europe and is one of the most ancient instruments still in use in Europe. It was used by the ancient oral poets to call the attention of the audience to their recitations.in the north the
