Changing radio stations can change your life. One afternoon I chanced upon a frequency transmitting music unlike any I’d heard before. West and east were tautly combined in a haunting refrain. From the west came a mandolin-like instrument strumming a languorous rhythm, from the east a melancholic male voice soaring over the guitar. It was as though someone had laid a Muslim call to prayer over a Hungarian dance tune. I had no idea where this music came from, so I rang the station. "We’re Albanians," a man said. He invited me in to meet them. Singer of the Year . Soon after he arrived in 1987, he was working at a plastics factory in Footscray, and saving what he could for his family in Kosovo. He invited me to an Albanian function in Epping, a dinner in honour of a dignitary from the Democratic League of Kosovo. The local ALP candidate and I were the only non-Albanians there. Moving through the crowd, I was asked a lot about my academic connections. Their leaders sought some one to give them access to Melbourne University, believing this would give them political credibility in Australia. They were a hearty crowd. Greetings were accompanied by emphatic handshakes, prolonged eye contact and a shower of cigarettes. After a plate of

History of Albanian Architecture
^top The Albanian architecture The Albanian architecture is included in different cultural currents as a created work in the territory of the crossways of Greek and roman cultures. It begins in the prehistoric times and continues to be present even in our days.
With the creation of great ethnic communities of ilirian population (3rd century b.C), the constructive activity is pointed out from the dwellings of that time.
They were build on water (palafites) or on dry lands and in general they were enclosed by a protecting wall.
The constructive period from the Vth century to the VIIth century, strongly connected with the slavery period, might be called the Ilirian Architecture.

Knowledge of traditions can help investigators solve cases
April 10, 2003 BY JEWEL GOPWANI
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER In the days after a March 30 murder at an Albanian church in Rochester Hills, police scrambled tolearn about Albanian culture Among other things, they learned criminal problems are often handled within the culture's community valuable context for the police as they sorted out what may have led to the shocking crime. Cultural diversity experts applaud attempts by local police departments to try to understand crime through a cultural prism, and say police can avoid a scramble when crime occurs by training officers about different cultures and traditions. "It's like putting money in the bank by going out and talking to all the members of the community," said Barnett Jones, acultural diversity instructor and Sterling Heights police chief. Last week Gjon Pepaj of Rochester Hills was arraigned on charges of shooting a Madison Heights man, Gjek Sufaj, during a service at St. Paul's Albanian Catholic Church in the culmination of a violent, longstanding feud between two former friends. To investigate the motive, police have been sifting through 700 witness statements some written in Albanian and learning from members of the Albanian community that the culture's traditions could be tied to the homicide.

More and more people have left rural areas for urban ones, particularly in the northern districts, such that in 1999 some 39 percent of the population lived in urban areas, compared to one-fifth in 1950. Albania has had one of the highest birth rates in Europe since the end of World War II (1939-1945) while the death rate has been one of the continent’s lowest. A high rate of population growth was state policy under the Communist regime, which viewed it as essential to Albania’s strength and prosperity.

Albania is a mountainous country in which about 70% of the land lies above 300 m. The mountains form a broad backbone from northwest to southeast, rising abruptly from the coastal lowlands to elevations of more than 2,400 m. In the north are the most rugged mountains, where a massive limestone extension of the Dinaric Alps reaches inland for 40 km from nearby Montenegro. In the central uplands lies Mount Korab, the country's highest peak, at 2,751 m. South of the Alps, the uplands are lower and more rounded, extending towards the south-east in a series of plateaus and ranges that merge with the Pindus Mountains in northern Greece. The western coastal region consists of low hills and lower reaches of valleys that open onto the coastal plain. Albania's longest river is the Drin. Other important rivers are the Seman and Vjose, which also form broad deltas. Albania's largest lakes are Lake Scutari in the north, Ohrid in the east, and Lake Prespa in the southeast.

Folklore
April, 2002 by Thornton B. Edwards
By Robert Elsie. London: C. Hurst and Co., 2001. 357 pp. 48.00 [pounds sterling]. ISBN 1-8506-5570-7 In view of this book's highly ambitious scope in covering not only religion, but mythology and folk culture in Albania, my excitement was mixed with some initial reservations. However, Elsie has done a splendid job and has compiled a wealth of hitherto inaccessible information in a single compact volume. The three principal areas of Albanian culture, religion, mythology and folk culture ("history" might also have been included in the title), are blended harmoniously and often inextricably linked. For instance, many entries on saints combine religious history with their legends, not to mention rituals attached to their festivals. As well as a great shqiptarofil, or Albanophile, Elsie is a brilliant Albanologist and in many cases, his knowledge and erudition are unsurpassed. The publisher is also to be congratulated on producing such a work and for the meticulous care taken with the Albanian orthography. There are well over six hundred entries (about half of which are duplicated as cross-references in Englisha great help in locating Albanian-word entries). Entries follow the English, rather than Albanian, alphabetical order. For instance, Gjishto is found before Grabofc and Shemra is before Syqenez (not after, as they would appear in an Albanian dictionary).

Albanian Identities: Myth and History > Customer Review #1: An Albania lovers delight

"Albanian Identities: Myth and History" is an excellent addition to any Albania fans library. About the only problem I had with the book as a whole is that the definition of myth is too narrow. Yes, myths do the things written about here, but they also fulfill a whole host of other important functions in peoples lives. For example, many myths act as archetypes of virtuous behaviors such as bravery, honesty, charity, and the like. Is it possible to separate the various elements of myth? Can we look at only one, two, or three facets of myth while relegating the other parts into the background? Relevant questions, I think.

37. Albania: Enigma Of The Balkans
(June, 1963), James Cameron offered an account of entering untouched journalistic terrain and made frank observations on various facets of albanian culture.
http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/flashbks/albania/albania.htm
April 24, 1997
D uring the past couple months the world has watched as the political situation in Albania not normally a grabber of international headlines has slipped into anarchy because of failed government-sponsored investment schemes. Many Albanians believed President Sali Berisha was behind the failed schemes and demanded that he be removed from office immediately. Some Albanians took things a step further: after looting army ammunition depots, Albanian rebels used their booty mainly AK-47s and surface-to-air missile launchers to wreak havoc throughout the impoverished countryside. A deployment of 6,000 soldiers, from eight European countries and under Italian command, has now arrived in Albania. "It is an indispensable mission," said Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro of the recent deployment. "Albania is simply falling apart." Self-isolating, destitute, fiercely independent, Albania is almost as enigmatic today is it was under Enver Hoxha, the xenophobic communist dictator who ruled Albania for forty years after the Second World War. Over the years The Atlantic has sought to shed light on this often neglected Balkan nation, through a variety of articles that have ranged from acute historical and political analyses to intrepid travelogues penned at a time the 1960s when Albania was virtually impossible to penetrate.
