British Archaeology , no 24, May 1997: Interview
The Prince's new man in architecture
Simon Denison talks to Richard Hodges When an archaeologist, and a former Director of the British School at Rome to boot, was asked to head the Prince of Wales's troubled Institute of Architecture last year, most people probably thought the Institute was entrenching itself even more deeply in its perceived role of advocate for reactionary classicism in architecture. At a time when its degree courses were failing to receive validation from the RIBA, and the entire governing council was asked by the Prince to step down, you could imagine the smirks of modernists in every architect's office in the land. Yet meeting the Institute's new Director, the Anglo-Saxonist Richard Hodges, it becomes clear that the Institute is bent on a new course. Design, apparently, is no longer the main issue. Hodges does not even, as one might expect, emphasise the `archaeological' aspects of the Prince's vision - the desirability, for example, of conserving locally-distinct building styles and materials and fostering traditional craft skills. Instead, all the talk is of energy-efficiency, the sustainable use of materials, and the `sustainability of communities', meaning (I think) the creation of settlements, often with community involvement, that are somehow complete in themselves, providing both work and recreation for their inhabitants. The details of how these ideals might be achieved are still fuzzy, but there is a great air of new beginnings at the five-year-old Institute's rather dowdy neo-classical HQ in Regent's Park, London. Hodges talks of the Institute's plans to `bring people together' to work out, for example, how new developments can be both sustainable and cost-effective, or both eco-friendly and enhancing of the spirit of place. My impression is the educational side of the Institute will begin to take second place to its new role of think-tank and publicist for any new ideas that emerge. The construction company Tarmac, apparently, has shown an interest, but there are still many seemingly intractable problems to solve and no guarantee of the Institute's ultimate influence on a market still largely driven by the need to keep costs down.

Dancing with the dead in a mass grave
Neolithic communities repeatedly handled the decaying bodies of their dead, writes Mary Baxter Every society must dispose of its dead in one way or another. The taboos surrounding death, however, are so deep-seated that any methods of disposal that differ from the norm are viewed by many today with a peculiar mixture of horror and fascination. For at least 3,000 years in Europe, and perhaps longer, the norm has been to dispose of the dead by either cremation or inhumation in a single grave. In the Neolithic period, however, from around 6,500-4,000 years ago, a completely different practice took place - disposal of the body first in one place, followed by a `secondary burial' of the whole body, or part of it, somewhere else. The great communal tombs of the Neolithic - earthen or stone long barrows, or passage graves - typically contain an apparently jumbled mass of bones from numerous bodies. The skeletons are often disarticulated (that is, the bones have been moved out of their natural skeletal positions), and frequently bones are missing. In short, Neolithic communities did not simply dispose of their dead; they handled them repeatedly and shifted them about. Antiquaries of the last century interpreted the sight of massed, disarticulated bone as the sign of lack of respect for the dead, or worse: cannibalism and ritual sacrifice, supported by written evidence from classical authors. More recent analysis has shown that the reordering of human remains was not random but often the result of careful arrangement. Examples include skeletons of men separated from women, and adults from children.

by Dr. Michael L. Galaty, Dept. of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, Mississippi State University In the first season of work, over the course of approximately twelve days, two teams of MRAP archaeologists operated in small valleys to the east of Apollonia, surveying nearly five square kilometers. Referring to topographic maps, team members systematically searched the landscape, pinpointing sites of past human activity, mapping them, and collecting artifact samples. Collected artifacts were returned to Apollonia's museum to be catalogued and registered in a computer database. At the same time, a MRAP geologist worked to interpret the area's complex geography. Fieldwork produced surprising and scientifically important results. Prior to MRAP's survey, there existed no documented evidence for early Stone Age settlement in Mallakastra. This is in contrast to southern Albania, where there is good evidence, from the vicinity of Saranda for several periods of Stone Age occupation (see the Frosina Infobit by Dr. Karl M. Petruso on Konispol Cave).

Dr. Michael Galaty of the sociology and anthropology department at Millsaps College has spent the past several years conducting archaeological research in the remote areas of Albania. Galaty will present a lecture about his studies, titled "Digging the Eagle: Archaeology in the Developing Nation of Albania," on Feb. 7 at 12:30 p.m. in Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex room 215. The program is free and open to the public. "My lecture will focus on modern Albanian history and the difficulties of conducting archaeological research in a developing nation," Galaty said. "Albania shows us how difficult it is for a poor, developing country to create new economic and political institutions, basically from scratch."
The lecture, which is sponsored by the Millsaps Forum Series, will be accompanied by the opening of a Lewis Art Gallery exhibit featuring Garett Holden's photographs of Albania. Holden, a freelance photographer, received his B.A. degree from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. The lecture will be immediately followed by a special gallery reception.
"Holden's work is tremendous, depicting a country experiencing massive change," Galaty said. "Albania is an absolutely fascinating place, and it comes through in these photos. The photos document the challenges and rewards of practicing archaeology in such a setting."

The first National Archaeological Museum was established in 1948, and then sistenatic research began in Apollonia. Archaeology in Albania is rich of information and it is very important for many conferences and also written in many books. There are many testimonials of prehistoric human beings living in Albanian territories and also of some prehistorical houses. The region of Korca, in South-Eastern Albania is the most-known. Testimonials about the Illyrian period are in many and they are clear. Research in Durres and Apolonia, Butrint and Ardenitza verify the Illyrian existence in Albanian territories. E-MAIL US VOTING BOOTH LOCATE YOUR RELATIVES Dr. Aleksander STIPCEVIC THE QUESTION OF ILLYRIAN-ALBANIAN CONTINUITY AND ITS POLITICAL TOPICALITY TODAY The question of the ethnic and cultural continuity between the early Illyrians and the mediaeval Albanians, besides being one of the most attractive issues of Balkan history, has also acquired a political dimension in recent decades. This is not the first time such a thing has happened in history. It was the Croats who before anyone else put forward the claim of being descended from the glorious Illyrian people, to the point of identifying themselves with them and giving themselves the name of Illyrians. For centuries, the Croatian language was simply called Illyrian. It is thought that Vinko Pribojevic (Vincentius Priboevius) in the 16 th century was the first to include the history of the Illyrians in what might be called a political program. Pribojevic idea; countering the ideology and threat of pan-Germanism, hi used the splendid history of the Illyrians in order to demonstrate a cultural and especially historical superiority to the GERMANS, Italians, and Hungarians. According to Pribojevic, both Queen Teuta and King Agron were Slavs, as were Alexander the Great, Diocletian, and even Aristotle and St. Jerom. (1) After him, Mauro Orbini, another Croat historian, relaunched the pan-Slavic idea in his well-known book, "Il Regno degli Slavi, hoggi corrottamente detti Schiavoni," published in Pesaro in 1601. The book met with great success and exerted a major influence on historians and politicians of subsequent centuries. Now nobody doubted that the Slavs, especially those of the western portion of the Balkan peninsula, were the direct descendants of the Illyrians. Illyrian was the tongue spoken on the east coast of the Adriatic, and the land inhabited by the southern Slavs, especially the Croats, was Illyria. The Croats adopted the name Illyrian for themselves, though more when abroad and in foreign-language publications than within Croatia itself. (2)
