Archaeology in Albania
During the XIX century Albania was "invaded" by foreign archaeologists. The first National Archaeological Museum was established in 1948, and then sistenatic research began in Apollonia. Archaeology in Albania is rich of information and it is very important for many conferences and also written in many books. There are many testimonials of prehistoric human beings living in Albanian territories and also of some prehistorical houses. The region of Korca, in South -Eastern Albania is the most-known. Testimonials about the Illyrian period are in many and they are clear. Research in Durres and Apolonia, Butrint and Ardenitza verify the Illyrian existence in Albanian territories. History Today
March, 2000 by Richard Hodges
NOVEMBER 1998 MARKED the fiftieth anniversary of the Albanian Institute of Archaeology. Enver Hoxhe, Albania's post-war Communist dictator, formerly opened a prototype Institute in 1948 and appointed its first director. With Soviet support the Institute grew steadily, embarking upon a programme of large-scale excavations to determine the indigenous Illyrian origins of the Albanian people. In the early 1970s the Institute was given its own building with a museum, and was provided with state funding for an annual scientific journal, Illiria. In these years there was a sense of romantic purpose to the activities of the Institute. As many as fifty excavation campaigns were mounted in any one year, and Hoxhe himself took a personal interest in the archaeological discoveries. When Nikita Khruschev pressed Hoxhe to create a submarine base in Lake Butrint involving the destruction of the fine Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins there, he haughtily refused, condemning the Soviet leader's ignorance of history.

Departments The archaeological studies, researches and excavations are designed and directed by the three departments: Prehistory Department Classical Antiquity Late Antiquity and Middle Ages Classical Antiquity Department. This Department is responsible for the archaeological research and study on this period from the VII century BC - IV century AD, and is divided in the Illyrian Antiquity and Roman Antiquity. The Illyrian Urban Period. (V - II century BC) The principal problems of this phase are related to the towns and colonies in the Illyrian territory, their foundations and developments, but also deal with the population, economy, culture, art, religion, etc. Studies of this period have also included as well the forms of the urban organisation in different phases. An important place in the Antiquity's researcher and studies has the process of the foundation and evolution of the Illyrian civilization and state. This was the reason why were excavated a number of Illyrian ancient towns and colonies such as Amantia, Antigonea, Apolonia, Butrint, Bylis, Dimal, Dyrrachium, Lis, Pogradec, Orik, Skodra, Lower Selca, Zgerdhesh, etc. Great contributions on the study of these centres have given disciplines like Numismatics, Epigraphy, and on mastics.

Reviewed by Barry Baldwin, University of Calgary. As the subtitle discloses, this portly volume is both conference record and Festschrift, the star of the show being the veteran expert in Greek vases Arthur Dale Trendall, appearing here as both honorand and participant. Like many another epic, this brobdingnagian production has been long in the making. The conference itself was held in July, 1985. Descoeudres' prefatory acknowledgements are dated October, 1987. The book itself appeared late in 1990. Habent sua fata libelli. After lists of contents, plates, abbreviations, and contributors, running in all to 38 pages, Descoeudres kicks things off with an editorial introduction-cum-synthesis that I suppose might have gone down better after a few jars of good Aussie beer. It seemed to myself both silly and superfluous. The opening sentence is preposterous: "When, back in September 1983, the plan was launched to mount an archaeological congress at the University of Sydney on the theme 'Greek Colonists and Native Populations', it aroused bewilderment both in Australia and overseas." Ironically, a good demonstration of colonial mentality. Why on earth, in these days of jet travel and fax machines, should anyone be bewildered by the prospect of an academic conference on any subject in Australia? No such emotions are expressed by Graeme Clark, Deputy Director of the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University and also associated with the volume under review, in his preface to

The Butrint Foundation, a UK registered charity, was founded by Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover in 1993 for the conservation and preservation of the ancient city of Butrint and its hinterland. Situated in modern day Albania, Butrint has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992. Working with the Institute of World Archaeology at the University of East Anglia, the Butrint Foundation has sought "to restore, preserve and develop the Butrint site... in southern Albania for the benefit of the public generally".

Gjirokastra The Ottoman fortress town of Gjirokastra, Albania, dominated by its 13th-century citadel, is built on seven hills and looks across the Drinos valley to the Buret and Lunxherise mountains. Declared a protected Museum Town by the Albanian state in 1961, its steep cobbled streets lead to the Bazaar at the heart of the old town.
What makes Gjirokastra unique is its large number of early 19th-century Ottoman fortified tower houses. Many of their interiors remain intact, with elaborately carved wooden ceilings, cupboards and screens and frescoed walls and fireplaces. In addition to its architectural importance, Gjirokastra has historically been valued in Albania for being the birthplace of many of its greatest artists, poets and writers, as well as of Enver Hoxha, the leader of Albania in the communist era.
The old town of Gjirokastra is now under threat, partly because of lack of funds, leading many of the houses to fall into ruin, and partly because of the danger of inappropriate new building.

Research Library
The creation of a first-class research library is fundamental to the future of modern archaeology in Albania. The ICAA library now has complete sets of Albanian journals such as Iliria, the review of the Institute of Archaeology, and Monumentet, the publication of the Institute of Monuments, as well as many other titles. In addition, the library now houses the first complete set of Loeb Classics in Albania, as well as a full set of the publications of the American School of Archaeology at Athens and the British School at Rome. Full runs of other periodicals have been ordered.Publication Assistance
Gjirokastra Conservation Project
The Gjirokastra Project began in May 2001 and aims to promote the conservation and development of Gjirokastra by creating a model that can be adopted by other Albanian towns which face similar challenges, such as Berat, Shkodra and Kruje.
